It’s funny, but I concentrate alot on normally squaring my hips and contracting my leg muscles at the same time. But I was trying to face the camera to my left and forgot to square my hips. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif My shoulders and hips are normally evenly facing forward. I do have a slight bend still to my back legs that I am aware of. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mad.gif Considering where I was a year ago, I am thrilled to be at this point. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif I remember when I first started training for my splits and told my husband my goal, he laughed at me and said "You got to be kidding. Your like a tripod" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif

I’m going to be in the Toronto/Burlington area September 26th to October 3rd. Wondering if there are any pole jams going on at this time?
Hey Jeng. The next Ontario Pole Jam is Sept 26, sunday 3-6 at SASS studio at Stoney Creek closer to burlington. I will be posting more info by the end of the week. -
I have both the X Stage and the Star stand alone. I LOVE THEM BOTH for different reasons. X STAGE is more steady but it is also almost double the price for us canadians when taxes, duties and brokerage fees in total. But it only comes in chrome and only 10 feet poling space. I love the star stand alone because the pole material is interchangeable. I have 1.75 stainless steel and 2 inch brass both with 2 feet extentions to give 8-12 feet poling space. I love that the dance floor is large but low to the ground so I can roll into the floorwork easily. The star stand alone platform base did move alot but I solved that problem by adding a thin industrial strength velcro between the base and dance platform. Now it doesn’t move or make any noise when you dance on it. Also the pole wobbles a bit but not noticable by me when I do my advance move on it. But to make the whole base extra secure for anyone poling on it weighing more than 250 lbs, I added weight bars of 10 lbs each times 8 inside the legs. You can purchase steel rods at home depot for nominal fee and have them cut it for a dollar each cut to the length of the legs. Hope that helps. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

Ah, I’m so annoyed I missed this! I was on my way when I hit a WALL of traffic in Burlington. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif I got stuck just past the 407/ Niagara Falls exit. I creeped along for forty minutes until I finally squeezed out at Guelph Line! All I could see to the horizon were tail lights. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif By the time I got turned around, it was backed up past Waterdown. STUPID traffic! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mad.gif Still, shouldn’t be a problem for Sept., though (fingers crossed)!
I’m so sorry you missed it Poleophile. It’s not the same without you. Next jam is changed to sept 26 at SASS studio at stoney creek. -

Yes, Dara’s DVD is very clear and labels all the muscles and movements very well. Totally different animal than Bob’s DVD. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Thanks Ottersocks, I’m off to order her dvd. Its quite resonable too at $19.00 and $7.00 shipping to canada. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif -
Okay. Maybe im not getting something but Charley said the reverse shoulder mount is the best to get into the death lay. And It doesnt make sense to me https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
Or did she mean that you get into the death lay from a shouldermount and then to get out of it to a reverse shouldermount?
I think Empyrean meant to say to get into death lay from shouldermount, which is the most common and easiest way I was told to get into it. Then get out of it from a shouldermount dismount/reverse shouldermount. -
Thanks Ottersocks,I’m going to reread Bob’s book and highlight the exercises you suggest. I just couldn’t get into his dvd.Just like I couldn’t get into elastic steel splits and flexibility dvd. How is Dara’s dvd https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif Easier to get into than Bobs https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif
-
Do you mean it is the same as shoulder dismount?
Exactly. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif -
What is reverse shouldermount?
Reverse shouldermount is the opposite of shouldermounting but once inverted, reversing your shoudermount move to come down. -
Empyrean, I am pretty solid in my aerial shouldermount and reverse shouldermount as well as superman. We just started prepping this week for the death lay and I can arch up and hold the position with someone pushing down my legs as I push up against their hold. We can not do an actual death lay at the studio’s ceiling as copper pipeing runs across the ceiling a foot down right beside all the poles. So in class we are just doing from either the floor or midway from a shouldermount. I have pretty much all the dvds out their but non of them do the death lay so I don’t have a breakdown of the move other than watching here on sv or you tube. I thought I saw Jennyne Butterfly look like she was in a superman hold with no hands close to the ceiling without her pushing on the ceiling but I may be wrong. When I do get a good breakdown and explaination of what i am suppose to be doing as soon as I invert into the hold into death lay, i will be practicing this with my crash mat and my 6 ‘2 husband under me spotting on my 8 foot ceiling. It is such an inpressive move and i got to have it in my bag of tricks https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif But I promise to take baby steps and never attempt this without my crash mat and hubby.

I can see from Joni’s picture that hip flexors are one issue here.
Ottersocks, I have been incorporating Bob’s theory of stretch resistance in my splits routine. When I started my hammies was so tight that I couldn’t even reach my ankles. Now I can grab my flexed foot and touch my knees with my head and hold that stretch for 3 minutes and I am contracting my muscles the entire time. And do 2-3 reps of some stretches. I don’t know of enough hip flexor exercises yet other than lunging prior to going into my front splits. Please tell me what other issues you see I need to work on as I really want to get all the way down. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
Thanks in advance. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif -
Foam rollers are awesome https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumright.gif ! In a pinch you can use the pool noodles too!!! lol
Thanks Veena. Pool noodles https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif What a great idea. I have lots in my pool cabana in different sizes. I don’t have to wait for it in the mail. OK, I’m off to the cabana to steal the kid’s noodles. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif -
Thanks Charley for the compliment. And thank you so much for the links. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif Great explanations. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I’m off to Yogadirect.com to order my foam roller. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

Thanks Charley, I’m absolutely going to do baby steps for this move. Great info. Also another question I have is once inverted from the shouldermount, do I grip the pole close to my private part or the middle of my thighs https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif
Thanks again for all the amazingly informative instructions. I also have another question I posted for you at the Health and Fitness forum under Flexibility Help post. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif -
The foam roller is similar to the idea of getting a deep tissue massage.
Charley, what do you do with the foam roller https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif How do you use it https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_question.gif I’m always looking for anything that will help me with getting my splits. I started my splits training at the end of Aug 09 at 19 inches from the floor. Im 43 and was the most inflexible person I know. I was never able to do the splits as a child.I would do the eliptical for 20 min then stretch for my splits for 45-60 mins 5 days a week. I’m now 2 1/2 inches to 3 inches away from my front splits. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I was told by someone that it took them 2 years to get the front splits which was so discouraging to me but I thought It’s better to stretch and work towards it than not have the splits 2 years from now. So a year into it, I feel like I’m so close and all this hard work is so worth it as I see a major improvements in the range of motion in my moves in both the pole and aerial silk. Here is a my splits progress pic. I now have great hamstring flexibility but my silk instructor said what is stopping me from getting all the way down is my hip flexors at my back leg when in the front splits. So I added more hip flexors stretches to my routine. I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif DSCF3695.JPG

My husband use to be the same way complaining to me about poling and neglecting him. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif I would go pole with my friends for a couple of ours twice a week. Then I added 1 extra night of going to silk classes and the complaints started rolling in. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif I work 12 hrs shift at the hospital 2-3 x a week, day shifts but I make sure the kids needs are met. After 16 years of marriage, I figured out my husband. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_farao.gif He is all about getting sex from me. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_safesex.gif So I up the anty and promised him sex 3 times a week in exchange for me going to classes 3 x. This has worked out for us for a year now and he hasn’t said a peep. Now I decided I want to add 1 more silk class to my 2 pole nights and now 2 silk classes. He started complaining again about my 4th class so I up the anty to 4x num-nums nights for him. He quickly agreed and stopped complaining. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif Now were both happy campers. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif
