MemberDecember 30, 2010 at 9:34 pm in reply to: What is this move called and how do you do it?It’s called the fishflop shoulder roll. To prevent rolling on your head keep your right hand straight to your side, bend your left hand at the elbow on your left side and roll your head to the left side between the triangle space that your left elbow makes. Hope that helps.

I’m currently in rehab/PT for a bad bicep tendon injury. For 3 years I’ve done almost nothing but pole as my fitness routine. I’ve always done Pilates twice a week as well, but find that better for stretching than for any serious strength training.
My PT said something to me that was a total "lightbulb moment." He said:
You cannot use your sport to train for your sport.
Football players hit the gym to build strength. Ice skaters use ballet to build grace, flexibility, and tone.
If pole is your sport, you can’t just use pole to train for it.
So I am now seeing a strength and conditioning coach three times a week to work on overall fitness and build the strength and stamina I need to be able to perform at the level I want. I’m continuing Pilates. And I’m focusing more on core-building and strength exercises as my pole warmup.
My PT is very wise! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gifi’m not quite sure i understand this… this may be a dumb question but…
when you guys are warming up for pole classes, what do you do? don’t you do pushups and core strengthening?
When we warm up for pole class, we usually start by dance freestyle to 1 song. Then stretches against the pole followed by pole pullups. -
I do aerial silk 2x a week and eliptical for 30 mins followed by 45 mins of stretching for the splits 2-3 times a week. In the car,I always have a hand gripper exerciser on 1 hand. I just also purchased the powerball which has so much great benefits for gaining strenth for your wrist, forearm and triceps. I also do 1 1/2 hour of acrobatics 1x a week and pole for 2-3x a week.

I don’t know what they are talking about. I partied with you at the New York Pole competition and you are awesome https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif as a pole dancer, teacher and as a person. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif You are top notch and those other studio is obviously jealous https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif of you and your studio. They just want to get rid of the competition. MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Great floorwork vids. Thanks for posting. I really like Karol’s vid. I took her floorwork workshop where she taught us this routine. So it is a great review vid for me.

It took me a while too sitting up from the ckr even though I thought i had strong abs. But keep practicing sitting up from a foot off the floor in your ckr. I was strong in my ckr/car but couldn’t just sit up initially. But wanted to perform this at a dance club so I did a bow and arrow from the ckr and slid down the pole in a bow and arrow sexyly landing on my shoulder and did a shoulder roll fishflop to the floor in the mean time untill my abs was stronger to sit up.

Now I’m the girl who does the cross ankle release at the club. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
I remember getting my 1st brass pole in my bedroom for mothers day. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif Now I have 6 poles all over the house as well as outdoor in every size, finished and make. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
I remember when I did my first invert being so awkward barely getting into it by jumping. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif Now I can effortlessly lift into it aerially. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
I remember when I thought I was the most inflexible girl in the world and my husband telling me I look like a tripod when I first trained for my splits. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mad.gif Now after 14 months of training, finally got flat on my right front splits. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif
I remember being so jealous of all you gals in the states for having so much fun at pole jams. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif Now I run the successful Ontario Pole Jams monthly at various studios. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif
I remember when I was so shy to go up on the pole to dance at a club. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif Now you can’t get me off the pole. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif -

I collect and have pretty much every dvd out there, ranging from amazing https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_razz.gif to garbage https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif but my favorite learning tool is still Studio Veenas https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif online lesson. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif I find her lessons are well rounded, well explained and broken down and professionally/beautifully filmed. Plus she has awesome floorwork and booty dancing https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif included which hardly any dvd has. Also, its like christmas https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_santa.gif all year with her lessons as she is always adding new tutorials. You will definitely get the most bang for your money. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

So after 14 months of 30 min warmup on the eliptical and 45 mins of various split stretches, starting at 19 inches I am now finally flat down in my right front splits and 2-3 inches on my left. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I have to be very warm though to get into it and it still hurts when I’m down flat https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif but I can hold it there with no hands for 1 minute. Here is a split pic on the silk but my splits look flatter on the floor. I will need to take a pic on the floor soon.DSCF4500.jpg

upandover, what is a bungie pack? What does it look like and where can I buy it from so that I can eventually add a stretch to my tricot.

I can do the Holy Drop. My latest moves are twisted grip mount on a 1.75 inch pole, spinning side climb into shouldermount into brass monkey and power reverse hook into spinning butterfly. Oh I also just got flat on my right front splits just 2 weeks ago https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif if that counts cuz thats a BIGGIE for me. It took me 14 months of stretching for 5x a week for an hour with 1/2 hour of eliptical to warm up first. I started at 19 inches from the floor.
