Everyone struggles with this to some extent, even your friend whom you see as being a natural and picking up on everything so quickly.  I don't know either of you, but I guarantee that there is SOMETHING that you do better than her, and at some point in time she has felt the same way either towards you or someone else.

Maybe it's math, writing, fashion sense, art, acting, flexibility, or the ability to think "outside the box", it could be anything.  My point is no one is the best at everything, and when it comes to physical activity everyone's body is different and will respond differently.  For example, I think I'm pretty strong (especially since I've been poling) and have been doing yoga for a long time but like you I get winded very quickly.  It's because I have no STAMINA, it's not because I'm not or will never be a good poler.  For me it's a health condition that I have no control over, and never will.  I am not only asthmatic but I also have a minor heart murmur (essentially it means that one of the valves in my heart doesn't seal properly and leaks).  This is just something I have to accept and make the most out of, if I let myself believe that I couldn't do this and had never tried, I would have missed out on the greatest 21 months of my life.  I also plan on poling for the rest of my healthy adult years whether or not I ever learn another trick, or gain more stamina.  I do it for me, because I love it, and I love the way it makes me feel.  You should do it just for you too.

Please don't let it stop you from poling, but more importantly don't let it stop you from doing anything you want to do in life.  Make it your own personal journey, celebrate YOUR successes no matter how small they may seem, take photos or video.  Like others have said, you can really see the improvements you've made even when you don't always feel them.

Have you tried looking up at your feet Chemgoddess?

I generally focus my gaze on my bottom hand or the floor for moves like butterfly and extended butterfly, and I was doing that when I first tried to take my legs off, but like you said I was having balance issues.  Then I remembered hearing Poledancefan getting the suggestion to look UP towards your feet instead of down for split grip Aysha, and I found it much easier. 🙂

You should be fine.  The main reason you need the pole under a joist is because ceiling material (plaster or drywall) will crack under the pressure without something strong and stable behind it.  But floors are made out of plywood with the finished floor (ie. tile, laminate, carpet) on top of that.  The plywood is structurally much stronger than drywall or plaster, so it doesn't matter nearly as much.

The reason floors creak is because the plywood warps slightly over time becoming looser in some places.  It can be fixed most of the time simply by adding a few more nails into the floor, but of course you'd have to rip up the finished top part.  If you ever decide to replace or redo the finished part of your floor, you can add nails then.  I don't think my pole has made floor creaking any worse though.

Well, warm ups are a must if you're going to have these people try your pole.  Also, do you have just one pole?  Keep in mind how long it is going to take everyone to take their turn trying all these moves, I would keep it simple.

I suggest maybe doing a couple different moves with guys than girls, because we each have our own natural strengths.  Guys LOVE to try the flag, they seem to think it's the coolest thing to do, but they think bodyrolls are really "gay".  😛  Girls, at least in my experience, love to spin, but most don't have the upper body strength to do it right on their first try.  Do you have Veena's lessons?  Maybe you could have them try the "extended leg spin" as it leaves one foot on the ground, or even just the half-spin.

If you have them try a pole sit, you should take pictures of the looks of pain and terror as they realize how much it hurts at first. lol

Then towards the end if you want you could do a short demo to show off just how much you can do.

I don't think it has a name, or if it does I don't know what it is.  It just came in an unmarked box, with the x-pole instructions and a copy of the x-pole dvd.  Stupid dvd didn't even work right, haha.  I bought it on ebay.  They were using x-pole's advertising pics and descriptions, but they never once actualy called it an x-pole.  I know that doesn't help much, sorry.

Sorry to all you X-pole dealers out there.  My pole is an X-pole rip off, 45mm chrome.  I love it so much, there was no way I could afford the real deal, including shipping it was close to $500 at the time.  I saved a couple hundred bucks, and still got a great pole.  It is extrememly safe and sturdy, it is identical in design to the x-pole, and unless you looked very closely I think you'd have a hard time knowing it isn't a real one.  To be honest, I am hoping to get a second pole later this year, and I will probably buy another one that is the same.  They are even cheaper now because the new x-pole design is out, and even though bottom loading sounds great, I've heard so many people complain about the new x joint I think I'll just stick to my chinese rip-off pole. 🙂

I thought of another one in the outside leg hang "family", it's a touch harder than some of the others I mentioned, but very impressive and pretty especially on spin.

Marley – but I do it slightly differently than what wikipole shows.  They might have this one listed under another name, but I'm not sure.  The picture shows grabbing your ankles, but I actually just cross my ankles, push my hip forward into the pole, and arch my back.  Either variation you can get into easily from gemini.

I bought a pole after taking lessons for about 6 months.  Shortly after that I left the studio I was going to.  It was getting to be too much money, and I certainly didn't feel like I was getting my moneys worth.  The lessons were seriously lacking in structure and safe techniques.  I feel like buying a pole for my house is one of the best things I have done.  Being able to pole anytime you feel like it can definitely help you improve faster, and I started learning a lot more than I was before.  However, I do miss the class environment, and being around other people who share your interest is a lot of fun.  Ideally I think a home pole makes a great compliment to studio lessons.  If there was a good studio close by and I could afford it, I would go back to taking lessons as well.

If your profile picture is any indication, then you are most definitely NOT ugly!  I think you're beautiful…now as poledanceromance suggests, smile and say thankyou, and believe it! 🙂

There are also a few moves that I refer collectively to as "gemini variations" some are moves of their own, but I find they all kind of fit into a "family" of outside leg hangs. Also, I found them to be all of similar difficulty to the gemini itself, so even if you haven't tried them yet, give it a go.  You can look them all up here:  http://www.wikipole.org/

    shooting star (aka jasmine)

flipped gemini/starburst (two VERY similar moves)

    flying cupid (aka flatline gemini)

    star

Plus another moves that isn't in "the family" but is a great way to come out of gemini:

tammy (aka one legged inverted crucifix or inverted thigh hold)

Have fun and good luck! 🙂

I completely agree with salubivires, be your own biggest fan!  I think you only cross the line into vanity if you start to act/believe that you are "better" than everyone else.  As long as you can believe in yourself without looking down on others, you're good in my books! 🙂

I've thought about it too.  Mostly because it's been 2 years since I had a steady job, and I'm totally broke. 🙁  The only thing that's stopping me is my husband.  He (understandably) has issues with me doing lapdances and rubbing my nakedness all over other men.  I would totally dance on stage and even take my clothes off, and he doesn't mind that so much, but around here that's not where the girls make money.  The stage is just where you show off, often you have to pay to go onstage, lapdances are where you get paid.  So, no dancing for me.

But clubs are different everywhere, I've heard of dancers who have to keep picking up the bills as they dance on stage, and some places have a "tip jar" right on the edge of the stage.  That would be ideal. 🙂  Also consider some bars/clubs are not nudes, they may be topless only, or even pasties required.  So there are options to doing the whole nude thing, depending on where you are.

@Glitterhips – and if she still won't budge just start bringing the pole to family functions https://www.studioveena.com../../img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I love it!  I would totally do that too. 😀  Good thing my family on both sides is supportive, I don't have to worry about it.  Although some of the extended family on my hubby's side has seen some pictures on fb and secretly asked my MIL what exactly I do…she just laughed at them and told them to go look in the album, told them it wasn't scary. LOL  Then she called me and told me!  hahaha 😀

My parents are super proud and supportive, they helped me pay for the pole!  They love to show off my videos to family and their friends.  I think my mom gets a kick out of seeing me act silly on camera when a good song was on the radio or something.

Like some of the other ladies here, I take down my pole for no one.  It is less than 10 ft from my front door, and directly in front of the big glass sliding door to the backyard. So EVERYONE knows!  I think my backyard neighbour watches me from inside his house when I have the curtain pulled back, lol.  Doesn't bother me in the slightest, he would never say anything though because we don't get along.  The only time it has come down was when we were having a weekend long LAN party (computer gamer speak) and we needed the space to lay out airmatresses, it didn't even really come down…just got loosened enough to slide it towards a wall so that it was out of the way. 🙂

Good luck to everyone who has the less than supportive type of family and/or friends.  Remember that you love what you do and that it is good for you and harms no one else.  They don't have to like it, but it is none of their business, and you shouldn't worry about what they think.  Next time that nasty MIL or other family member shows up unexpectedly,  just pull out your biggest tricks and show off.  Who cares what they say, maybe they'll even turn around and leave?  Good riddance. 🙂

V, I have always loved watching you dance, and have always felt that you "dance" with grace and fluidity whether on the floor or not!  So in that sense, I think you already have accomplished it. 🙂

Part of what helps me choose my music is whether or not You Tube is going to allow me to use it on any vids I upload there.  Which could also help explain the "done to death" side of pole dancing.  For example, I have danced to Led Zepplin as PowerTwirl suggested…but do you think YouTube would allow it…no way, I had to change the audio.  However, I know I could upload a song done to "Closer" (first song I thought of as well, although the dancers that can use the syncopated rhythms are much more interesting than the ones who use the typical 1-2-3-4).  So I guess part of the decision for me stems from what I want to do with the video.

I love to watch both for different reasons, I can't pick one over the other.  But for myself, and my own dancing I am currently working on dancing.  Mostly for the practical reason that I just don't have the stamina or the trick reel for a song of trick after trick after trick.  But it's a lot of fun, today for instance, I danced to nearly a whole song on the floor.  Only got up for one spin I think. 🙂

@Runemist and others thinking about NuvaRing

As for the orgasms…I have no problems there.  I know some women never truly have them, but I have never been one of these, lol. 😀

One of my biggest concern about the ring before getting it was, "Will it be in the way when me and hubby do the horizontal mambo?"  My doc said that it shouldn't but if either of you don't like the feel of it, you can just take it out while you "get it on".

Sort of like the opposite of most bc, instead of putting something in (me) or on (him) we take it out for the sex, then I just reinsert it afterwards. 🙂  Problem solved, orgasm fun here I cum…  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_safesex.gif

I am using NuvaRing right now.  I only just started my second month, but I don't think I've gained any weight so far.  I like it actually, no pills to remember, no fuzz stuck around th edge of your patch, I think it is helping with my acne, and it stays in place just fine for me (no kids yet though).  I have been on many different dual hormonal contraceptives and the NuvaRing is good for me, I have not noticed any problems yet but have not really been on it very long.  The only thing I can forsee being a problem is keeping track of when I'm supposed to take it out/put a new one in.  Right now, I've been putting a sticker on my calendar so I can keep track of it.  It's working great. 🙂

That's just not an easy question to answer…here are some things to think about.

You have to find your own "sweet spot", everyone will find it, but it's different for everyone.  Once you find the perfect spot, angle, position, whatever, you will instantly notice a big difference!

Also everyone's skin is different, and can take longer or shorter to "get used" to it.  It WILL get easier with time and practice though you can count on it. 🙂

One more thing to keep in mind…every new move you learn that has a different grip contact point will hurt just like this until that part of your body also conditions itself to it's new intended purpose.  I'm a big baby when it comes to this, and there are/were some moves that I avoided for a while because it just hurt too much!  Also if you don't do certain moves for a while, you can lose that "conditioning" and it will hurt again when you try it next.

Pole = Pain but don't be afraid, we love what we do!  Keep at it, it is sooooo worthwhile. 🙂

March 8, 2011 at 9:54 am in reply to: weird question…

Hubby and I went to a couple clubs in TO one night.  The first place we were at, all the girls completely ignored us!  There was next to nothing going on anyway, long waits between stage dances and a pole that was obviously not used for tricks as it was right at the edge of the stage.  Needless to say, we didn't stay long or spend very much.  So we hopped over to another club on the airport strip and had a good time, it didn't take long for the girls to approach us (I was wearing my stripper heels, so they were like, "ooh, are you a dancer"  It's pretty good for the ego, lol)  All the girls could at least do a few pretty spins, and there was one who could do quite a bit on the pole.  I was impressed, I spoke with her afterwards (while I got a lapdance, first one ever, 😀 ) and found out she teaches the other girls before they get busy.  I wished we hadn't wasted so much time at the first club, we would have spent more time and money at the second.  Oh well, live and learn.  For anyone in or visiting Toronto I highly recommend the Spearmint Rhino.

I think I may have to join in the fun for this one.  February was kinda the month for life kicking me in the face so I could really use a reason to jump back into some fun.  I'll have to think about what the first album I bought was though.  I'm an 80's child too, so it may have been No Doubt, or Ace of Base, or even some kind of Mix (Dance Mix, or Much Music).  I may just pick an old song, whether I ever owned it or not and just have fun with it. 🙂

One of my first scorpio handstand attempts.  I was having a hard time finding the balance point, I got my legs off the pole and fell over backwards, twisting my back as my body went around the pole…not very graceful!  I didn't hurt myself badly though I was sore for a couple days.  Advil to the rescue! 😉
