I should add about my recipe.. just in case anyone tries it:
1 whole egg, 1/4 cut oats, 1/2 cup greek yoghurt or cottage cheese, optional cinnamon, vanilla extract, splenda.
1/2 cup greek yog / cottage cheese is alot for this recipe, but that’s because I’m trying to pack the protein. The pancake is easier to fry and closer to a traditional pancake with more like 1/4 cup greek yog / cottage cheese. FYI! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
PS: I dont add cinnamon / vanilla / splenda but eat mine with 3/4tsp honey, some sea salt and another fried egg on top. Isn’t that weird?!!
Happy clean eating ladies!!

Ooh lilbit! Your pancakes sound cool!! I recently tried to make a protein-heavy pancake and I devised this recipe of
1 large egg, 1/4 cup oats, approx 1/2 cup greek yoghurt or cottage cheese (the latter in low-fat version is prob preferable for anyone monitoring the fat intake.. but personally I don’t) Your egg-white version is even more protein-packing, though!! Will try 2m!! -
Oooh oooh I love the holly drop!!! Will be emailing.. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

MemberJanuary 4, 2010 at 6:12 pm in reply to: Question for ladies who have/want to go for PhDPoledanceromance.. that sounds good.. like you really do see yourself enjoying academia and all that. But, I think it is a totally good idea to take a year to calm down and decide if it’s the best thing to do for you! As you say, you dont have to stop learning. But maybe for now reward yourself with some time to learn something that you’ve always wanted to, but it’s not necessary "career" driven!! If you are feeling a bit emotional / overwhelmed, it sounds like a good idea to get some down time from that constant stress and tension.. it’s probably better for your mental focus in the long run!!
I think part of my problem with the PhD was rushing into it.. straight out of college, the funding, the topic and the supervisor were already laid out for me.. and I hopped straight in, not even taking a moment to think if the topic *really* interested me. I mean, I did little internships in the same lab and with the same supervisor the previous year, but it was quite different when I really got into the meat of the topic, and had to stay there more than a few months!! I just kinda thought I’d fly through it – just an extension to undergrad.. prolong college life for a little longer, hopefully with the expected paycheck bonus in my first job post-PhD (which has become less of a gimme in these "troubled times")!! As well, alot of this going straight into PhD thing seemed to be happening all around me at the time – it was just the culture of the college, my friends.. and all the "free" grant money sloshing around the Irish economy c. 2005 – it didn’t seem like such a BIG decision then. But it was – and sometimes over the last 4 years it felt like one I hadn’t even made myself!
Some of the most focused and happy students in the labs were ones who went out to work in the field first, really found out what aspect they were interested in and then came back a year (or even years) later. They had picked the supervisor based on this interest, and negotiated a project that they really felt passionate about – as opposed to just being handed one – like me!! Some students are indeed just constantly passionate about learning .. but then the wrong environment/supervisor/topic, and even the most capable and enthusiastic can find themselves feeling a little short-changed in academia land.
Taking some time to think and analyze sounds brilliant!! Best of luck to you!!

MemberJanuary 4, 2010 at 1:47 pm in reply to: Question for ladies who have/want to go for PhDHi! I recently handed in my PhD dissertation – although in Ireland, so I think that the system must be completely different.. I don’t understand much of what you’ve written!! However, if it is any comfort to you (or maybe it wont be), I *hated* doing my PhD.. took me 4 years to complete, although I had only planned and had funding for 3. It’s been 3 months since I finally finished and I still cant seem to get over the trauma!! I just had quite of a hard time, ran out of money and sanity.. and I grew to dislike the subject matter I was working on (Digital Signal Processing of Music/Images/Videos – sounds fancy but I *hate* it now!!), the idea of working in that field, or in academia, the departmental politics, and all those involved in it!!
If I had known then what I know now, I’m not sure that I would have pursued it at all.. I certainly don’t plan to use any of the "skills" I obtained whilst doing it.. anxiety, negative thinking, general unhappiness etc. I don’t want this to sound like a big scare story, but I *wish* I had thought a bit more, long and hard, about whether it was worth it.
Do you see yourself in academia? Do you enjoy being in that environment.. i.e. hanging around talking shop with all the profs / grad students?? That is a question I should have asked myself at the beginning..
Whatever you decide, best of luck.. PhD is tough. Well done to you for how far you have come!! Whether you hang on in there, or otherwise.. it doesn’t matter.. do what you think is right for you, and you will be fine!!
PS: My thesis defence is next Thursday… freaking out!!!!!!

Tine007.. I do agree with you that the poses look extreme.. and possibly dangerous for those of us who are not used to back-bending whether extremely or not!! However, some of the points are good. I like the idea of training a back-bend whilst lying on the floor on your side.. previous attempts at bettering my back-bend had me over in the park pile-driving my head into the grass from a standing position!!
Better than average flexibility is usually good, but extreme flexibility? Are we sure that it is *always* health-promoting?

thanks for posting this.. it’s helpful!

Well done verticaltherapy!! It *is* possible!! Ooh you’ve inspired me to push it harder!!
I tried the wrist seat thing and – like someone else said earlier, I got it first time then couldn’t do it again https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
That was me!! Sucks doesnt it?!!! It seemed to easy the first time https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif

Oooh I love this vid too!! And I love that reverse grab variation.. MUCH harder than it looks, right? My favourite part is the little variation on the wrist seat at 5:24.. I tried it and it worked the first time for me!! Then not the second, or the third, or forth.. or EVER AGAIN!! Arg!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Also the spin she does at 5:08 is cool.. it’s like a weird pretzel on the shin!! -
What I’ve always wanted to know is what is the name of the move she does at 2:00. I first saw Felix Cane do it and I think it looks so beautiful!! Anyone know what it is called???
It looks like the pretzel spin.. but on a spinning pole. I’m sure it has a name as a pose alone.. I *think* (but I’m not sure..) that I’ve heard it called "Jewelbox" before.. prob because it looks like the pose of the little ballerina in a jewelery box! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_idea.gif And I’ve also heard it called "Ballerina".. AND "Stag pose". Damn multi-names!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Yay I got a pair too.. and they are very nice alright!! I got mine yesterday and I’m wearing them again today… very comfy!!! Enjoy!!

I agree, Sissy – popping and booty shaking in the holds.. that’s my new goal!!
Cheers RedSauce for the direction to tutorials.. they look intersting!!

Well.. I *wish* I lived in Hong Kong because there is nowhere for me to practice my aerial skills here in Dublin, Ireland!! But I do have friends in Hong Kong, and if I ever visit them, I might drop in! Best of luck with your studio!

I get SAD too.. I’ve tried the light boxes, the herbal remedies, meditation, prescription pills… hypnosis even!!!
The only thing that works for me is going to the gym religiously! I like to do alot of running when I get there, because the endorphins it generates make me feel better. I must go at least 3 times a week, and when I’m really SAD, I go almost every day!! I even go to the gym for a couple hours before I do poling sessions, which I’m sure is not always a good thing!!! My family and boyfriend think I’m nuts, and people make fun of me because of my devotion, but whatever works, works!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Hope you find your fix! I say do whatever it takes to make you feel better!! Even if it seems bizarre!!

Hi guys.. well done Polegrrrl!! Your routine was great!!
I’m currently processing vids of you all.. compressin’ em.. flippin’ ’em 90 degrees, compressin’ ’em again!!! They are just gigonormous!! Soon as it’s done.. I’ll throw them up in a secret location online.. then ye all can grab ’em and do to them what you like!
Hey, you can see me in Polegrrrls’ vid sitting down on the ground near the pole with the bright orange jumper and the little camera held high (god my arm was aching after all the routines!) I also had to hold a slaved flash bulb for a photographer who was on the opposite side of the room to me!!! In some photos he took of the night it looks like my stomach is a strobe light!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
As for competition entering.. god no!! I start hyperventilating even thinking of putting up a video on here.. I’m quite the really, really, really, unconfident person!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif You guys I was thinking of doing Pole Unity with Caroline and the other girls in our school in March whenever you guys put it on up in Drogheda, Poletickles. You see, if there is more than one person on the stage at a time.. then at least I wont feel like everyone is looking at me!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Kudos and fair dues for getting up there an doing it you guys!! Takes guts! Well done!!

On the ball, Trena!! Sounds cool..

Hi all – thanks for the replies!!
Binejean thanks for the tip with the back walkover – I’ve been trying that too. Falling back into a crab is grand.. the hard part for me is kicking out of it into the walkover.. if you know what I mean!! I might try a series of moves with the bed alright! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Veena your hard work must be paying off… I loved your gymnastic-y forearm (or was it a head) stand in your USPDF entry video – it looked so cool, very smooth and controlled, and boy do you have abs to die for!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Verucablue I’m in Dublin, Ireland. There are no circus schools here! And the other day I went searching for an adult gymnastics class and I ended up emailing the coach of an all-boys gymnastic club in an all-boys secondary school (in Ireland we’ve got lots of uni-gender high schools!) because I didn’t realize the club was only for men (both youths and adults). There were pictures of ladies doing gymnastics up on the website.. but I got a fairly bemused email reply suggesting I could come along, but I might be outnumbered!! (but the underlying tone was don’t really come along… you crazy woman!!!!) I’ll do some more searching, but if that doesn’t work I’ll just have to wait around for my gym buddy to spot me!!
Gymanstics is cool!

The demon stole my shoulder mount before too.. and then returned somebody else’s to me by accident!! (it doesn’t look the same as the one I had before!!) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif
