My advice would be to go back to the beginner class and spend time learning the basics. You are so new and advanced so quickly. There is much more to pole than tricks. It takes time to learn the spins, grips, proper technique, and to condition your body for pole. I have done pole and started silks and it’s the same-starting over to build muscle memory takes time. Veena did a Periscope about fear. I am strong enough to do level 2 pole but spend a lot of time in level 1because i don’t want to half ass learn stuff just to say i did it, then move on. I want my spins and transitions to be pretty. I had a bad fall out of a superman 6 mos ago and now have fear. This is how i am addressing it. Don’t give up, pole is great!

Please stick with it and share your progress with us! I will be 50 in a few days and nothing is stopping me. I have recently taken up silks as well. Veena’s program is spot on and I’m sure you will do great!

MemberSeptember 19, 2016 at 5:13 pm in reply to: And the “feminist” war against pole continues…hmmmm, interesting, thank you. If this was an anomaly-one badly-written piece of nonsense, I would indeed ignore it, however it is one of many and this is now a global protest against pole that is perpetuating dangerous myths. I am allergic to drama but in this case, it IS our circus and WE are the monkeys. Pole fitness/dance is the circus we love. I have zero time for this but (speaking for myself only), believe it is my duty as someone who has deeply benefited from aerial arts to step up and insert my voice because I believe it is wrong to enjoy the benefits of the sport and let others do the dirty work of providing the facts. When it gets hot in the proverbial kitchen, I choose to stay and defend my sport. Hence, I am sharing here for others who feel the same way.

Thank you for the lecture. Obviously my instructor and I have discussed this and what I will practice. Again, my questions are: is there is a platform similar to Studioveena to SUPPLEMENT the lessons, for home review, and where can I purchase silks and rigging?

Is there mail delivery? I get all my grip aids off amazon.com. I have dry skin and find itac has worked best. Congratulations on your pole journey, it will change your life!

Mine just ended one day out of the blue with no email or warning. I had tried to check my status but could never find it. Love the site but that’s the one suggestion I would make-to make it easier to see account info, resubscribe to extend a subscription without having to email, and send reminder emails when the subscription is expiring. Thanks for a great site!

Following. Thanks so much for thinking of this topic!

@Baudelaire, I so agree. For such a dangerous sport there should be lessons on how to fall safely. When I was figure skating it was always drilled into us to fall on our ass, don’t put hands out to break the fall because that’s how fingers, arms get broken.
-
Ok thanks. Just looking to start getting used to the hand positions and build strength at this point. Still need a more solid butterfly.
-
@Girl-exactly! My mind tells me “You fell out of that comfortable move without warning so it can happen at any time” and I have to keep countering it with “That’s not true!!”. It’s like Veena said in the Periscope-awareness is key. I think it was a combination of being tired and being distracted by other people in the class. It doesn’t mean that my body is just going to indiscriminately fail me-that doesn’t make sense.

P.s. I see the lessons for handspring and half handspring; its handspring to Ayesha I’m looking for. Thanks.

Thanks everybody. So appreciate your stories and advice. I have a love of sports that have a danger element to them, which brings joy to my life, and normally have less fear than others, which allowed me to progress rapidly in pole, so I’m bound and determined to conquer this!

Hi Osilas! I am in RI and go to Love Pole Fitness and Aerial Arts in Bellingham. They are soooo supportive and wonderful. There are all levels of pole fitness and pole dance as well as flexibility, pole gymnastics, chair dance, belly dance, Lyra, silks. They have a Groupon currently running and always have specials. If you want to go let me know. A friend and I sometimes ride up together on sat morning. You are welcome to join us. If you want to get together to hang out and pole we can do that also but I am by no means an instructor-poling only 10 mos.

MemberJanuary 25, 2016 at 2:53 pm in reply to: Body Slipping during Gemini and ScorpioWhat helped me was getting the correct points of contact. This is very important because they create the push/pull that locks the body onto the pole. Once I got those right I felt very secure. Also using grip on the contact points on the legs-behind the knees-helped me. The grip helped when I transition from Gemini to Scorpio with no hands. Good luck!

Ruth, so sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you are well soon. There are videos on the site that are complete workouts so you don’t have to figure them out for yourself. That alone is worth it. I tried Nia and loved it too. Found it to be very feminine and spiritual. Be well.

MemberJanuary 24, 2016 at 2:47 am in reply to: Apparently I’m not a beginner! First pole class in 9 months49 here and been back poling since April. Joined a studio about a month ago and was so thrilled to have the same experience! The instructor keeps saying “and you, you are strong so I want you to do it this hard way”. I did competitive figure skating and the other girls would just as soon put razor blades in your skates, never mind clap and be supportive and offer to take a video. Not sure if the forum here and the studio are representative of the pole community but I hope so. I just love seeing women of all shapes, sizes and ages kicking ass with no apologies.

One final thought. Doing it for a living takes much more physical and mental strength. To me to say #notastripper means someone is actually LESS of an athlete. Didn’t get to take days off to nurse sore muscles or injuries. Had to perform or be homeless. Competed every day because the one with the better skills got to pay her rent that month. Many of the girls did serious gymnastics too. And there were no lessons then. No poles to learn on at home. Damn hard physically and required street smarts. And poling was only a small part of the job. Not like now when I can slip into the other room for a little herbal tea and a nap if I get tired poling. But it was a tiny piece of my journey that helped make me the strong, confident woman I am today. And you know what? I have seen more shameful behavior in the boardroom than I’ve seen in the clubs. I’ve left “normal” jobs because the ethics made me sick. At the end of the day it’s about respecting and honoring each other’s journey.

Veeennnaa!! Thank yooouuu!! The video is spectacular! All those criteria apply to me. I have been using iTac. Where does one purchase DewPoint and Mighty Grip? I have a powder coated lil mynx and even have trouble sticking to that. Cold hands, cold climate, don’t sweat. Even in the summer I only sweat a little.

Been doing them for 6 mos but possibly it’s because my food intake is not matching my output and I need to eat more. Maybe my muscles aren’t regenerating properly. My bmi is down to 18.
-
I feel like I am losing back flexibility. I can’t do a layback any more and grab the pole. I am consistently poling, working on flexibility, strength, but I seem to be regressing in flex. Not sure if it’s stress from work and needing to increase my food intake. My bmi is down to 18.

My story is the same as viscious’s. i’m just glad I found poling again and now it’s a sport too. I feel good about being at the studio with women 20 years younger and keeping up, love my body, my strength and don’t give a flying #*^} what anyone thinks. The haters are just cowards and secretly jealous imho. #peopleneedtogetoverthemselves.

MemberDecember 23, 2015 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Strengthening/conditioning questionsIt’s not that I don’t expect to feel the muscles but there’s a difference between feeling them and knowing when something is wrong. I have a burning sensation between my scapula sometimes, which to me indicates I need to strengthen them. Also I might have the name of the grip wrong. I’m trying to do this. Is there a dictionary of grips btw? I am using the wrong terminology I think. Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated!

MemberDecember 23, 2015 at 4:08 am in reply to: New To Pole! Excruciating Thigh Pain? Also I found if I use grip aid on my thighs it makes it worse. I am skinny and have space between my thighs so I have to grip hard. I thought I would die learning superman. Also don’t let the pain keep you from learning how to come out of a move safely. When first learning superman I would do the move, be all happy I did it, then let go and go crashing on the mat to end the pain. Good luck!!
