This should be the other thread https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/Split_grip_alternative_20140627101743 started for grip/trick alternatives if you are interested to follow or contribute 🙂

@Veena, for instance the jamilla I don’t see an alternative grip but do you think there is any way of getting pressure off the bottom arm to achieve the same trick? I see this and the jasmine/shooting star used a lot in transitioning between tricks so I’m just wondering what else could be done…like even getting into superman uses the bottom arm for support do you suggest just trying to power through without the bottom arm for this one?

Pretty pixie you are right I guess we would just need to be extra attentive to keep hips up/body sideways to keep that hold since the bottom arm is not there to stabilize like it would in SG. Do you feel with the regular grip you end up more in the armpit/bicep or folding to forearm on the pole (for bottom arm)? Veena I wish I could use my arm in that way but not even a partial SG is an option (for me). The only type of SG that doesn’t cause the pain is if I am inverted for example in ext butterfly. Seems like it would be the same but I guess it’s a different type of pressure.

Yes I have this exact same problem and never thought before to explain it similar to a shin splint but it really is (x2)! From what I’ve researched it does seem like it will always be an issue that even when given rest will flare up again 🙁 however I have not tried the powerball but have really been wanting one since this issue is definitely hindering my pole progress in general. Pretty much every move that’s being taught lately is with split grip which is so frustrating! Only once so far has an alternative been given…other than that it is “required” which I don’t think is right. I’ve tried searching the threads for some more specific “do this move this way instead” without so much luck but I have come to the conclusion that no, split grip is not always required and an alternative should be offered to avoid INJURY. That is the biggest thing that I don’t see instructors understanding (surprisingly)…I’m sure we could get through the pain and yes even we know we can hold that pose but at what cost? I think I will start another thread (since it looks like I’m not the only one with this pain) to get more specific like “I do this move with split grip but I can also use a whatever grip…”

I had to go up a size in pleasers…I’ve never been a size 8 in my life but there was no getting my foot into that 7 because of the toe strap like not even to give it time to stretch. I felt like the size I had to get was way bigger/loose at the time but I’ve been able to walk in them so far with the ankle strap on tightest. I hope they don’t get even bigger due to the nature if the material and wish they had half sizes!

If you could figure out shipping I would want this because I’ve never actually seen stainless available. Will it fit a lower ceiling height (extensions remove to what height)?

I need help with this too I feel the same way like it’s magic! But I have been told not to use the elbows at all and instead reach hands all the way forward so the body can sink lower with each exhale….I still don’t get the same fold as the bendy people but maybe it’s helping lol. Looking forward to other responses!

I’ve been needing the same help although I think yours looks great!! I cannot for the life of me get my knee to hook so I’m only hooking at the ankle and at best the calf even though my hips are up as high as possible… Super frustrating with all the repositioning needed to secure a move that comes right after and not being able to just flow into a combo. Are there any stretches you guys suggest (maybe this will help)?

May 7, 2014 at 11:46 am in reply to: Mixed level classes tips

As a teacher of individual level classes I always note the advanced girls coming back to refresh their beginner level skills and have them progress from a basic move that’s being taught to something like you have mentioned…working up to one arm and focusing on technique or variations of the move. We can always find something to work on! From my personal pov as a student attending mixed level classes at other studios I feel like these could be great classes if they were planned out but I usually notice new girls with the “deer in the headlights” look getting left behind or advanced girls not getting any pointers because they “should know” how to do it. I’m interested to hear success stories of how any of you make the mixed levels work to everyone’s advantage in case I ever find myself teaching one…afterall, students pay good $$ to learn in class not just stand there!

I think try squeezing lower more towards the knees and you will be able to lean your chest slightly forward to keep your balance (squeezing up too high makes me fall back because there’s no room to go forward)

As these girls have mentioned iTac is great if you REALLY want to stick. I only use it for holding poses and not for spins (made that mistake once and thought my wrist might break lol). I’ve recently tried out the dewpoint+mighty grip mixture here http://youtu.be/jgvvc2uvcFw
and I like that so far for a good balance (I do not have sweaty hands though).

I’m interested to see replies to this topic….I recently saw a class listed for “skin conditioning” (like pole conditioning focusing on breaking in the skin maybe??) now I can’t remember which studio but I would def like to know how to do this lol….I guess good (but really not so good) news is that studios around my area seem to start class late, take up a lot of time talking or installing equipment we need and then of course warm up for 15-20 min so we only get about 20 min on the pole anyway 🙁

I recommend yoga direct mat (I got mine on Amazon) here is another thread that might help you decide too … Not really sure if that posted correctly but you can search crash mats in the discussions too 🙂 https://www.studioveena.com/forums/view/5334b790-4d08-479c-b14c-37450a9aa0eb

I think it is really personal preference…it’s seems that 45 is the new standard; however, only newer studios in my area have them. Also I’ve been told it’s harder to go from 45 to 50 than vis-versa. I purchased a 45 to focus on spin moves and because my hands are very small but looks like you might have a good size for a 50. I’ve practiced on some 50s and I notice that while it’s more difficult at first for spins, I feel it builds my grip strength in the hands and it’s also great for body holds when you start inverting etc. I wish I could just have all the pole types at my disposal lol. Overall though…I’d go with whatever is universal in your area if you will also be going to studios or for instance if you work at a club makes sense to practice at home on what you will be using elsewhere.

  • I love dirdy birdy! I think this is just like most other moves in pole…looks easy but it’s actually not lol. It took me a while and lots of rewinds to get this one down but I think first you need to be comfortable with the hand placement and able to confidently support your body in the start positions (this doesn’t seem like your issue but maybe for others I would practice even just being strong in the hold first). You can also practice building up strength for the twirl part from the floor by lying on your back, pulling the body up center with the pole (face to pole tummy to ground) and then lowering again to your back on the opposite side. The reason I say this is just because there is actually a lot of strength involved in order to control the movement and landing. Again that might not be your issue but something for those just starting. Also, after practicing the way it is taught here, I’ve started doing it without lowering to the shoulder…not sure if that is “right” or the safest way but it seems to work for me!

Lucky you are in the UK I really wanted a lulu mat but shipping was way too pricey to the US….anyway maybe this will help you decide from what they told me: The 1″ protects for falls up to 2 metres and the 8″ protects up to 4 metres. This is for the lulu mat but I assume it will apply for most mats.
I ended up getting a yoga direct mat on amazon because it was the closest in diameter to the x-stage (lulu’s is the exact size one reason I wanted it!) and round in case you land funny no worrying about cutting corners….I was more than pleased with the yoga direct mat in the 4″ thickness I don’t wish I’d gotten anything thicker and according to the above statement it seems that 4″ thickness will provide plenty of protection for the average pole (under 10 feet). Hope this helps!

I feel your frustration as I have also had a bad experience with my brass pole…no matter what I do zero grip and have never had grip problems on previous poles. Mine is the high polished one although I’ve had issues from the beginning where the finish is more like the texture of paper (the closest thing I can think of). Brasso didn’t work for me but might help you “break it in” by cleaning it. I recently ordered a bunch of different types of grip aids to test out so we shall see…if all the grip aids still don’t work I guess you could consider the tacky gloves but I personally don’t want to have to go that route as it seems like it will restrict movement.

Yes I have done the lessons here it is great to know we can contact you with questions! I’m just looking for a physical presence to help me as well since I personally learn better that way….similar to polers who frequent the studios in addition to SV (which I would like to do but haven’t found one to work with my schedule situation for the levels I’m at). Figured I’d try posting here since there’s such a large following from the pole community

March 4, 2014 at 10:02 pm in reply to: Wrist wrapping: why don’t we do it?

The chiropractor worked wonders for my wrists made them feel so much better after years of pain! I have been looking for some sort of wrap or support too though to prevent future injury and allow me to do things I would otherwise be weary of (handstands and even push-ups became too painful)…but seems like the ones I’ve seen would impair grip from the fabric covering the hand. Now that I’m reading the blog mentioned above…has anyone tried those crossfit strength wraps vs say a mighty grip wrist support and do these things actually work?? The ones I found at wal-mart really just seemed to cut of my circulation lol (and had a fabric on the hand which was bad for grip).
