MemberJune 27, 2011 at 12:53 am in reply to: Making an iguana mount not totally awkwardThat's funny Cinara that an iguana mount is a compulsory move..Is that normal? To me its one of those moves that doesn't look pretty enough for the effort required…but having said that, I have flexibility issues, everything looks prettier when you're really flexible. And I would think that the dismount/mount would be a nice option……:-)

We have just posted a story on a pole costume designer – there is a link to her facebook page which has more costumes on it and there are some pics in the post. The pricing is in the post too….! http://www.polefitfanatics.com/2011/06/polefitfanatics-interviews-anna-deacon-from-pole-fitness-wear/

Sassafrassle,
I think the fact that you have a question in your mind about this person woudl suggest they are a weirdo. Trust your instinct – unfortunately by the nature of pole we will attract more than our fair share I suspect! Trouble is, we're all so nice and trusting and people like this are taking full advantage of that. If in doubt, delete…. 🙂

I have done a lyra and silk workshop – there is a studio a few hours drive from me. The hoop was similar to pole in a lot of ways – I found the silks a lot more challenging. I loved them both, but at this stage while there is still the pole to master, I doubt either will replace the pole as my first love – and, of course, while there are no lessons closer…

Just a word to those who think they may re-post their blog posts here from their own blog – google frowns upon duplicate content so you may affect your blog rankings by doing it. Why not just post the odd link in the forum if relevant? That's what I do. I am a blog owner, but I am here to join in, help and be part of this community, not necessarily to promote my own blog. The people here are great, and Veena (and her webmaster) have set this great site set up – I think it' would be a little bit cheeky to post a blog post here solely with your own links…the nerve of some people! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Enter a competition…okay, I know that sounds a bit radical, but it really helps to have the end-game in mind. In New Zealand we now have a amateur pole comp – NZAPP, from beginner levels through to advanced and open, so anyone can enter. In the beginner levels the focus is more on the performance aspect, intermediate has a cap on th move difficulty so it is fair for everyone. I have entered the competition and although it is totally scaring the life out of me, having that goal there is spurring me on no end….And I am entering to compete, not to win. Lots of others I have spoken to are not going to enter until the consider themselves good enough to win – I have no such aspirations, but my pole is improving radically at the moment because of the extra effort I feel I have to put in….

The 'kick the back leg' was my adaptation until I could lift…! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif now if I am at the end of a long session and am tired I lean right back and just use a bit of momentum to swing – hey, it's not perfect, but it helps to get these moves any way you can as long as it is safe because the muscles tend to keep building strength as you do it – sort of like when your trainer spots you in the gym – theoretically you are cheating, but every bit YOU do is improving your strength…

Have you tried wax? Ordinary candle wax. We don;t use it at our studio, but a lot here do. It's a revelation – it comes off when cleaned with white spirit. But, give it a try, it's amazing.

MemberMay 2, 2011 at 4:43 am in reply to: Desperately need help with aerial (mid-pole) invert! 🙁Sorry, late to the party on this one but I have been away! After taking almost 6 months to get an invert from the ground this one came surprisingly easily. I watched Jamilla Devilles instructional video for this one and had it nailed very quickly. Tips were;
Climb the pole, hold the pole with your arms at 90 degree angle, move yourself to the front of the pole, if you need to at first use your back leg to kick off the pole slightly to push yourself as well as lift yourself. It took me a couple of weeks to get it looking anything but ugly and graspy as I grabbed for the pole with my foot (!) but slowly but surely I am able to do an inverted v into the invert. It really helped be having the arms very bent and make sure you move your body to the front of the pole..Hope it;s getting easier for you…!

MemberApril 10, 2011 at 4:57 am in reply to: Do you have a move that you’ve had to just throw in the towel on?Just another little update here – finally got the superman – at last! I was busy hanging there telling the girls at the studio how I couldn't do it because all my weight was hanging on my top leg and I needed to transfer it so I could free up that top leg…and then I just did it as I was talking it through – I was thrilled! They looked at me like I was mad! Literally I have been trying to do this all year. Now….onto that handspring….https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I am in the gym at least twice a week for heavy pole related weights sessions – usually focussing on back, shoulders and chest probably more than arms. But of course when you are hanging onto heavy weights your forearms, wrists, biceps and triceps get a good going over too. These sessions have improved my strength on the pole quite significantly. I think the gym is a very complementary addition to your pole exercise and would highly recommend it if you thing this weakness is a problem for youhttps://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif.

Thanks so much for your support Gingercake. That's a great idea peforming in front of family and friends – I will do that. The comp isn't until July and although I am really only at the top of intermediate level/beginning of advanced I am entering the advanced category because some of my strongest moves; ayesha, straight edge, jackknife – are all specified as only being able to be used in the advanced category. So, I am not expecting to place, but my fellow category competitors will be pretty amazing – so I am all about getting my routine as polished as possible! But, I will certainly keep everyone here posted!
