Loopy – I mentioned the butterfly thing, because I know someone who got called out twice for doing a butterfly on an X-pole outside the studio (and when I attended, I was told X-poles were horrible to even consider because they're removable), AND for even attending another studio in another state. And it conveniently was mentioned after those events.

Anyway, unprofessionalism was part of the reason I left too. Trying to decipher text speak about business is not worth it. Emails were sent to me concerning my membership there in the same type of text speak.
Getting hurt doing pole? I too cut myself on the pole mounting screws and got heels caught in the flooring that came apart. Couldn't tell you the last time I had been spotted during a trick. And yes I agree, anyone can get hurt on any pole, whether it be removable or permanent.
Bad mouthing instructors who may have done weekend certification courses or have self-taught isn't supportive. Some of the best professionals out there in the pole world taught themselves. Everyone has opinions on styles of poles they like – I like PS permanents and Xpole removables and wouldn't consider any others. But criticizing someone's choice of learning/certifications is out of line.
I almost quit pole because of this kind of stuff. Luckily I found a few other studios who were professional, friendly, and very supportive and it reignited my love of pole and I've grown tremendously on my own (well, with Sam I Am, and workshops with Karol, and pole jams with NC studios!) 🙂

MemberMarch 23, 2011 at 8:16 pm in reply to: Aysha…split grip vs. forearm grip vs. elbow gripI'm an elbow gripper. Forearm grip feels awkward, and I've always found myself gravitating towards elbow grip from the minute I attempted my first aysha. It's gotten a lot better since then lol. Split grip is evading me, my balance is horrid trying to straddle out in a split grip from the pole (yet I can cartwheel mount into one).
Working on the extended aysha with the elbow grip currently 🙂

That studio owner posted that after a girl did a butterfly on an X-pole (an X-pole which has seen MUCH more advanced tricks than a butterfly). I wouldn't put a butterfly in the category of Acro pole, if by acro pole you're talking about the Chinese Acro Pole style. They've never performed that style there, nor are any of the people true Acro Pole performers.
Interesting how a girl I know who went there fell on her head/off the pole more than once during inversions due to instructors chatting instead of spotting. And that was on a permanent pole

I would think I'm damn glad I got out of there when I did! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I bought a pole 2 months after starting pole at a studio. I found having a pole at home helped me practice as often as I wanted, and whatever I wanted. I went to the studio for just over a year before leaving in Feb 2010 (too much studio drama, plus work and school). In July 2010 I went to a workshop in NC and learned that it was the kind of studio I dreamed of having available here, and started poling more regularly at home with a friend who also left the studio here. In 6 months of working out together using YouTube, pole jams, and workshops/privates, we accomplished more than we ever did at the studio (which actually pretty much made us PAY to advance, it wasn't based on skill – the next level was a minimum of 2 years away, even if we could do all the moves required to get there and then some).
I'm NOT saying this is how all studios are though – I've been to four awesome studios in North Carolina that have made me wish I still lived up there. But having a pole at home has helped with my progress tremendously. Being able to watch something on the internet then get inspired to practice or play on the pole means that I can because the pole is down the hall. =D You also can work on your strength using the pole at home as well.

My pole never comes down – it's a permanent lol! My MIL is cool with it, and so is my husband's aunts and uncles and grandparents. My maternal grandmother LOVES that I pole and shows people pictures of me all the time. My friend and I are staying at her house for USPDF and plan on bringing one of the X-poles to set up at her house for the weekend – I'm gonna get her on it!
But my mother, oh my mother. She wont even go near the pole, or that end of the house except to use the guest bathroom (WHEN she visits… I've lived here 6 years, three hours away, and they've visited me 4 times). She's expressed to my grandmother she doesn't care about anything I can do on the pole, silks, or hoop. Rolls her eyes at my heels and asked me one time "Are you REALLY going to wear those out?" (My clear 7" with black straps!)
I definitely LOL'd at the "Can you?" !!

I'm a trixster. Not big into the dance part because I dont flow well (at all), and am more into the strength involved https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I like watching all sorts of cool tricks and ways to get into them from others moreso than dancing around the pole or doing floorwork. (My friend and I agree, the floor is hard! lol!) I get bored watching performances that are 90% dance 10% tricks. But that's just me 🙂 Me and my pole buddy call ourselves "Zorayas" rather than, say, "Aletheas" when describing style. That's the great thing about pole – so many different styles.

I have a Mirena as well. Got it in December, and hyped myself up for excessive pain. Barely felt much except slight pressure for 15 seconds or so. (Never had kids, just waiting on the 5 years of having the Mirena before the doc will give me a TL or Essure). Had a great experience with it the first 2 months. February I had a 2-week period, but its supposed to be crazy for the first 4-6 months anyway. So far so good with it. I have noticed some more breakouts on my chest though since getting it.
Before this, i was on Yaz for 4 years. Worked great, just got tired of having to remember it everyday, and taking it could be a pain because I work in a lab where no food & drink are allowed. Or I'd get caught up and be late on it and freak out, even if it was 30 minutes lol. Once my doc offered Mirena, I was sold (since she wouldn't fix me at 23 haha).
BC affects everyone differently, it sucks that there is no standard side effects – some people will break out, gain weight, etc while others wont. Good luck!
-
Give it some time, everyone is made differently 🙂 When I started some of us could hold ourselves off the ground, and then there were some girls who could not. But after a few classes, you could see the improvements all around. You'll get there!

Hmm, Sugar Ray was the first album I bought, maybe I'll make this my first challenge LOL. My team leader at work suggested I dance to "Fly" haha.

Now I'm trying to be sure to get at least 1 day in a week of extensive pole stuff (used to pole 3-4x a week for 3+ hours each time! Darn you, school for interfering!)
Hope your body rewards you for taking it pretty easy! 🙂

I'm one of the people Sair mentions at the end lol. I hate brass, love chrome 🙂 Cant ever get a decent grip on a brass in my experience. But I'm glad to hear that X-pole plans to offer brass for those who like it!! It's great to have a company that will sell a variety of product finishes to fit everyone's wants 🙂
-
Yep. Your body eventually conditions itself to it. 🙂

I've been to one of the strip clubs here before and none of them did anything but use the pole as a prop to walk around or hold onto while they bent over. The others I've heard are the same way in this area. But I've also heard from guys I work with that they've been to places in other cities and states where there are some dancers who have pole skills 🙂

I had one sort of before, I could only get up into a tuck, never straddle or jackknife or anything once I was up. Yesterday, after some tweaking in stance while jamming with some talented ladies, I got a TG handspring into straddle, although only could hold for a split second each time. Probably a lot due to excitement in getting it! Whenever I get the vid I'll probably post it.
I found that starting lower helped a lot. I put my top arm at shoulder height like I would doing a cartwheel mount, then twisted the grip, and put my bottom arm pretty low. Bent down and "piked" my legs before giving a kick for my momentum (nowhere near being able to just lift yet). The leg momentum on my leading leg might have helped continue my trip up into the TG straddle, instead of staying tucked the whole time.
Hope that makes some sort of sense.

My cats are in nearly every at-home pole pic I have. I have three, and say they are my agents, biggest fans, and spotters hahaha. One of them will stand at the bottom and meow if I climb the pole until I come down. And flops on the floor right under my feet. Have a few pics where he attacked my pole shoe lol.
I'm a crazy cat lady who poles 🙂

I looove checking out ceiling height in places. I'm always looking up thinking "this'd be a good place for a pole"….
I also found the perfect space for a studio – high ceilings and hardwood floors already there. Too bad I don't have time to run a studio!

MemberFebruary 27, 2011 at 10:36 am in reply to: How often do you record your pole work?I record certain trick attempts now to see if I'm close, or see my progress (like extended aysha and extended pencil). I keep telling myself I'm going to make a pole vid soon. I have a couple but they are from when I was a beginner and I'm not a fan of watching them much lol. It's good for laughs but I privatized them on YT so no one could see them haha. We do take lots of pictures of stuff though, and are making our own printed "wikipole photo album".

I have a chrome PS 50mm pole I find to take a lot longer to warm up than a 50mm chrome Xpole. I'm a chromie fan though, so I haven't tried a TG one.
-
I have a 50mm pole, and am planning on ordering a 45mm one as well to have a variation. 45mm is better for smaller hands to grip, but 50mm is a more standard pole.
I've used someone elses' 45mm pole and didn't notice TOO much of a difference except that my fingers went further around it. My hands fit a 50mm pretty well also though (long fingers!)

MemberFebruary 22, 2011 at 9:47 pm in reply to: Does there come a time when you HAVE to use grip aid?I use it for learning new tricks i'm unsure with and when the pole just wont seem to warm up well enough. Most grip aids and I don't seem to work well together though. I've used Windex successfully, iTac on the pole, a spray called Stick'Um(?) and most recently Dry Hands (which didnt work well the first time – much better this 2nd time).

Awesome! Congrats!! 🙂
I remember having to perform for the beginner class on my last night of it before moving up to intermediate. It was a great feeling!

MemberFebruary 22, 2011 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Do you have a move that you’ve had to just throw in the towel on?The Marley. Oh the freaking Marley. No matter how many times I've been shown that …. I still cannot grasp the stupid thing. I end up way too horizontal. I've had pros show me, and I still cant do it. It's taken over practices before. I'm going to try and work on it a little more, after being shown another way to do it.
My knee hold was relatively easy – I got it after an instructor at the old studio I wasted time at told me that I'd never get it. So I went home, and did knee holds until I got it, then brought in a picture to show them next class. Pffffft.
The Allegra is another one I'm working on. I need to learn to lean downward, but I just dont do it!! It would totally help with the fluid look if I could do it but I get stuck mentally and physically on the leaning down part!

MemberFebruary 16, 2011 at 7:30 pm in reply to: how to excuse your hubby from your pole sessionsMine is the other way – My hubby has to be asked to come in and watch or take pics lol. He's indifferent to it. When I go to my friend's house, her husband is indifferent to it as well but will come in and help spot if we need him. Otherwise neither of them pay attention, and if they're together, its as if we're not even there on the poles!
