Does there come a time when you HAVE to use grip aid?
Posted by MommaBear on February 21, 2011 at 9:20 amThus far, I haven't tried a grip aid product, because I really have felt the need to use one. I have a decent grip and no issues that wiping my hands on my butt can't solve. As I am attempting more advanced moves, I can see that there is no room for error or slippage and have been thinking of trying to use a grip aid. I'm thinking that as moves become more advanced, you almost HAVE to use a grip aid as a safety issue?

i think this is from poler to poler different. i haven´t been using grip aids yet, too. just tried some but never kept using them. i think if u feel unsafe it´s good to use them. especially for learning difficult and new tricks.
i now bought some mighty grip gloves, because some days my hands just have no grip or when i do a long pole session and my hands get too sweaty they might be useful.
but i think every move and trick can be done without grip aids and it´s important that u do not get addicted, because this might be bad for your grip, when you once don´t use a grip aid.

I know that using it has helped me nail a move until I was comfortable enough. I had 2 moves that I could never do without using something…one was knee hold (sweaty knees) and the other was iguana mount. For some reason with me as soon as I put my head between my legs my hands would start to sweat and I could never get a proper hold.
Now I use it only when I am either not warm enough or too warm.

Same here, Chemmie! Normally I don't like to use grip aids, but when I was learning Iguana Mount, it was as if my palms turned on the faucets. I definitely would not have gotten that one without some sticky help. Right now MommaBear, I'm using stuff in my inner legs for advanced plank and sometimes I'll need it for elbow grip caterpillar climb. It really depends on how warm the pole is and how dry my skin is. There's nothing wrong with grip aid UNLESS you're soley relying on it to do the move. I've seen a lot of girls who can only climb with their shoes or boots on.

ive seen shaving cream been used as a grip aid for inner thigh moves. it seemed to work for the poler.

I'm a big grip aid user. I have extremely sweaty hands so I am always layering on the Tite Grip. I rely heavily on anti perspirants.
Now grippy grip aids – I don't use those too often but I will use them in class if I'm doing a demonstration and the poles are still kinda cold or my skin is really dry (I'm so lucky to have sweaty palms and dry legs – nice combination!)
I don't think you want too get reliant on grippy gip aids but for a performance I might have the poles prepped with something. I usually have my pole prepped with Grrrip because because my hands are sweaty I can pick up the aid off the pole and my hand grips will be solid.
But I don't think there comes a time where you have to use grip aid – it's up to you. I also think if you're getting frustrated or the extra stickiness will make something safer you should go for it.
Lots of other sports use grip aids – so why shouldn't we? 🙂

I just tried my polesit and my thighs are gripping but the skin isn't sticking to the pole. I was doing it just fine all week but now I'm sliding down. Is the skin on my thighs too dry? I don't know what's going on.

I had this problem for a couple of month, my skin was to dry and when i start to use lotion (before bed or in the morning) i saw a good difference. As long as you don't use it before poling it could help you.

I usually have to use a grip aid on non brass poles in the winter. I have come to terms with that. Sometimes, the temperature and humidity is just right so I dont; need to, but thats a rarity these days.
My phsysiotherapist reccommends I use one when I have try skin to avoid strainign my wrists further in an attempt to hold on as I tend to rely more on my hands when my legs are not sticky. Better "cheat" a bit and get some practice in sideways instead of hurting myself or not poling at all.

I use it for learning new tricks i'm unsure with and when the pole just wont seem to warm up well enough. Most grip aids and I don't seem to work well together though. I've used Windex successfully, iTac on the pole, a spray called Stick'Um(?) and most recently Dry Hands (which didnt work well the first time – much better this 2nd time).

I use itac2 pretty much ALWAYS when I pole. I use stainless steel poles and its usually very dry and very often cold in the studio and I have dry skin most of the time. It happens very rarely that my skin gets into that perfect grippy condition so I need to use the grip most of the time.
I tried chrome poles recently and for the first time I could get a really good grip just after warming up.
So it might just be that my skin and stainless steel don't get along.
I don't think using grip aid is bad at all. I do belive that it is also good for your own safety to use grip aid especially when you are doing advanced moves and hanging upside down holding with your feet or other body parts.
Lots of people in other sports rely on grip all or most of the time. Why should it be bad to use it? If you cant do a move you probably cant do it using grip aid either. So I dont think that you can cheat by using grip aid.
