Ok – the font was WAAY too small…I'm re-posting!!

    ———————-

Yeah…it sucks that the world we live in are still preeeetty conservative….especially working on corporate office. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

Some people are more "acceptable" then others, some people have "zero-tolerance", and some people are just plain MEAN.

Example: One of the lady in my yoga class from work asked me if I work out on the side other then yoga (we work in different department but our work place offers yoga classes during lunch hours several times a week) I told her I also do pole fitness on the side…she immediately made some MEAN comments like "Oh, you plan on working in name-of-a-nearby-strip-club after work??" Then other women starts to chime in "Yeah, you can earn some dollar bills!!"  (I swear, those women are just jealous that I have a much better body and much better flexibility…I kick their butts in yoga!!) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif

However, when I told one of my other coworker about my pole-fitness, he was like "Oh, I've seen those. Pole aerobics, I saw some men that can lift their whole body at a 90 degree angle! Those are great workout where you can really build your strength." https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif(The only reason why I told this coworker is because he said he has a large mirror that he wants to get ride off and I said I WANT IT….then he asked what for?)

Back to Runemist34 – Like what other people mentioned, it really depends on what you want to do in your career. But in a corporate office, the higher you go, the more conservative the people are going to be. Don't do something that you will regret or inconvenient for yourself later.

I know I know…people shouldn't judge you by what you look like or how you dress…and that we all have the freedom to express ourselves….blah blah blah. But in reality, people DO judge…people WILL judge you in their mind and they won't even say a thing.

Don't let your personal life affect your work career and vice versa. It's hard to achieve a balance, but it's doable. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Oh- I forgot to add emphasis on WORK CLOTHES….

    On non-work days I do keep my hair down…wear mini skirts…halter tops…3-4″ heels…and ofcourse pole dancing 🙂

@Runemist34 – you can get a tattoo on your back or shoulder, just somewhere you can hide it with work clothes. Most professional office environment don’t allow sleeveless, as long as it is a place you can hide comfortably with your work clothes it should be doable.

My tattoo is at my lower hip where you can’t see it unless I’m wearing a bikinis. I’m actually thinking about getting a tattoo at my lower back..lol

Again, I must emphasis, if you want to climb the ladder of success, you have to sacrifice some of your freedom of expression.

Unless you work in Google, 99.99% of the professional places have a lot of unspoken rule…tattoo is one of them. No one will tell you “We won’t hire you or give you a promotion because of your tattoo”…but believe me, it’s in their mind.

But if you REALLY want to get a tattoo somewhere obvious on your body, there are makeup kit out there that are use specifically to cover up tattoo. (I tried them, they are a pain in the butt to put on and remove…think VERY heavy concealer)

I'm a regular in yoga…and I tried hot yoga for the first time this past weekend: It. Kicked. My. Butt.

The first 60min I was fine…it felt like normal yoga to me but just sweat a bit more…then, I was SHOCKED when the class did not end after 60min…it turns out to be a 90min class!! The last 30min took A LOT out of me…I drank almost 2 bottles of 20L.

I think I like hot yoga…but I didn't like the instructor we had (I went w/ my bf). She was really "boot-camp" style…she didn't play any music, she tell us to change pose after like 2 seconds…it just didn't flow.

Eh…I bought a Groupon for 10 classes and since the first class was free, I'm just going to finish up my 10 classes and find another place for Birkam yoga.

Oh…most importantly…It does help you with flexibility and if you hate cardio like me, hot yoga might be the best way to lose some weight! ^_^

Wow!! Took them long enough!! I can (soon) finally tell people a move and they know exactly what I'm talking about?? Instead of saying things like "You know…the move where you lift your lift up and arms out in the air???"

I LOVE tattoos…BUT working in a professional environment it's best to hide it/them.  I work in a very strict professional/uptight environment and I'm the only female engineer, in order to look professional and be taken seriously, I don't even wear skirt or dresses.  All my suits are pants and I don't wear any open toe shoes to work either.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not old fashion, but the people I'm work with are (VERY!!).  And if you want to climb the ladder of success, you have to sacrifice some of your freedom of expression.  I often have to work with clients/lawyers/other business people, if you have a tattoo (I have one!!), it better be a place where you can hide it.

Sorry if I burst your bubble….but that's just my 2 cents.

@ LolaSlaytor – Thanks for the Wikipole site!! I never knew it exist!! Very helpful ^_^

And the Teddy my instructor showed me is similar but not the same, instead of holding it with your arm pit, she taught us to hold the pole with 2 hands then split our legs.  And I can't seem to find the Goddess and Koala that she taught us.  But anyway…whatever she's teaching us was ok…it hurts, but ok…however learning inversion for after 1st, 2nd or 3rd class WITHOUT crash mat? It's just not safe =(

I feel you…I have similar issue with a family member.  I think I'm in much worse situation…but I'm coping.

It's hard to just-let-it-go…but you don't want to be the person that ruin-the-family's-harmony…or whatever that's supposed to mean.

Just give take some time off that person…let it cool down.  Take a week or 2 off from that person…no contact, no communication.  When you're cool down, try to see if you can at least be a friendly acquaintance.

    ~hugs~

@PoleNerd – question, does your chrome pole rust (not the whole pole…but specks and dots?) from cleaning too much?

@ horsecrazy – Eh…I haven't sign up for Veena yet (not til I get my pole!!) so I can't see the video =(

Is Teddy when you climb up the pole, hold pole with both hands and spread your legs??  Also, I also learned:

Koala – climb to top of the pole, hold pole with knees only, hold upper body with forearm, left and right am alternating for like 4 times while you slide down slowly

Helicopter – hold pole with both hands, bring knees up and over your head so you're invert V

Again, no idea what level these moves are in….Maybe I'll find out when I sign up Veena's classes in June.

*I'm reeeeally excite about getting my pole!! I can't wait till i can practice from Veena's…I really want to build on my strength!!  June 18…count down…count down….^_^

@ horsecrazy – Actually, I learned the Teddy on my 5th class…I thought Teddy is a beginner move?? I can actually do it pretty well…I can climb on the pole now with no problem now (given my hands are not dripping with sweat!!)  I also learned the invert crucifix like 2 classes ago (9th class??)

With the way my current instructor style of teaching…I really have no idea what level of pole move I'm learning.  I just expect whatever I'm learning now are all basic…but I guess this is not true since I'm TOTALLY not ready for inversion…I can do it,  but I KNOW I'm not doing it right (ie. she taught us to swing our leg to get momentum…)  I can only invert if I swing my leg…if I don't, I won't have enough strength https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif

I plan on signing up for Veena classes as soon as I get my pole!! (Decided on a 45mm chrome xpole https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)  I'm doing a count down down til June 18!! (my birthday~~)

Ladies…at LEAST you girls were learning tricks…I slammed my kitty when I was warming up!!!

I had both arms on the pole, feet shoulder width, head down, stretching my back, when I got up…..both on my feet slipped on the recently-waxed-hardwood-floor…. and MEOW https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif…I had tears in my eyes….it HURTS!!!!

@ dustbunny – Yes, she wouldn't let me use the crash mat b/c there were 7 girls and only 1 crash mat…so, just to be fair https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif  (yeah, so if one sink and hit the hard wood floor…we ALL sink and hit the hard wood floor…https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif)

She was teaching a class of 7 last night and 4 of the girls were NEW (like this is their SECOND pole class) and she was teaching us invert (and did I mentioned they were in 4" heels??? No…I wasn't stupid enough to learn pole in heels…I wore ballet flats).

I took a total of 10 maybe 11 classes?  I can do pole climb, teddy, fireman, cradle…but my arms and core is no where strong enough to do an invert and a V !!!

I'm AM getting my pole! But it won't be til June 18 (my birthday)…I'm doing a count down now!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

LAST NIGHT!!! Last evening I went to my pole class and the instructor won't let me use a crash mat….so I refused to practice invert.  Then last night…in my dream, I climbed up the pole to do an inversion then I FELL! Ah…that's when I woke-up…

    I'm looking for a crash mat now…LOL

I have really tight muscle so I usually try to do 30 min of yoga on days where I don’t have pole or yoga class.

I’m NOT a morning person so I prefer to do yoga prior to dinner and before my shower.

But like you said, it is hard to squeeze it during a weekday, but once you set time for it and stick with it, it’ll get easier.

    Happy Yoga~

  • @ Beingalex – Yep…I'm with you.  The more I think about it…the more I'm leaning towards 45mm.  I can't see myself progressing when I'm fear to be on the 50mm…I want to get strong and comfortable before challenging myself… lol

In the beginning I want to get the 50mm just to be "standard"…but if I do get a 50mm but I'm never on the pole…then it defeats the purpose.

    What’s the material?

I don’t have my own pole (yet), but I read that new XPole has a thin flim on them, to protect the pole from shipment. I heard acetone and distill vinegar can work wonders.

Tell him you're not comfortable with him being around.  That you might be more prone to error and mistakes because of his presence, that's dangerous.

Not sure about you, but I get nervous when there's a pair of  eyes staring at me while I'm still at learning stage.  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gifGood Luck!

  • @ Empyrean – Tell me about it!! I've never pole dance before and I know you're not suppose to learn new move in heels! The instructor said it's easier to "bring your self up" and "to turn" with heels on…Maybe…but I can always tip-toe =P

BUT, she is a really really sweet person…I just wish I can feel safer when learning a move…especially a new move.

About the pole size…I'm really interested to know about the competition size. Like I said…I suck now but when (IF) I get good…I would consider https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I asked Dirdy Birdy…she said she started on a 38mm…then 42mm then 50mm.  She suggests I get 45mm just to build on strength and to get comfortable with the pole first…then get a 50mm and adjust to it.  I'm leaning hard on the 45mm now even though I've never used a 45mm (There are no other pole studio in my area to try the 45 https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif&nbsp😉 Just because I get so nervous gripping the 50mm (my hands gets REALLY sweaty and I slip…a lot…) I don't want my hands to slip in a middle of a move https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif !!

Please shed some light here!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_viking.gif

  • It was my 10th class but it was the 3rd class for 3 of the girls https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

I feel like I total suck right now so I'm faaaaar from being a decent pole dancer…nevermind competing…BUT…IF I ever get "good"…ofcourse, I would like to try to compete.

I think I read post that you own both 45 and 55….Did you have trouble transitioning? If I ever get "good" (good enough to perform?) I probably would like to get 2 poles…https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
