Oh and another thing – this might be a silly question but is there a particular brand/length of shorts you would recommend?  Most of his are too long and get in the way, but I can tell he doesn't want to wear anything that's too short, especially if they're loose and gap at the legs (he's pretty comfortable with his sexuality in general but doesn't want to feel like he's "on display" either…)

I find sometimes that a tennis ball just won't cut it. If you need more pressure/something firmer, try a lacrosse ball.

Also, does anyone have experience with a PS pole breaking, and how did the company handle it?  They say they only cover damage from a factory issue if it is under warranty so have you had to pay for replacement parts ever?  When my X-pole broke they sent me a new height adjuster for free (i didn't even pay shipping) and it wasn't even under warranty, but I don't think they would advertize that they do that – it took me by pleasant surprise 🙂

Hm. I'd like to avoid anything one-piece if i can because i'm at a point in my life where I'm moving around enough that it would be too inconvenient – I need the flexibility. does the cover ever get in the way when it's on the top? would that be recommended, and how much more difficult would it be to set up (would i be able to set it up myself)?

    @charley

"I'd only get the one piece because the bottom loader has a bottom cover that is larger than the pole and it cut my foot up badly on my remi drop."

On the PS website it looks like both the single and the multi piece have the same type of bottom cover?  Can't you make the pole top loading by flipping it, and would it still be a problem do you think?  I want to get a 45 but am so torn between xpole (i have a 50mm multi xpert) and ps (never owned one but our studio poles are ps) – however the height adjuster sticking out on the ps pole is one of my biggest concerns, especially now that i'm learning cartwheel/handspring mounts – i don't want it to get in the way and i certainly don't want to cut myself!

  • hm…I probably use spin mode more than I use static so that's definitely something I'll keep in mind…

  • any tips for breaking it in besides cleaning it with acetone?

I just tried using fashion tape for a top I wore in a competition over the weekend.  Good thing I continued to warm up and stretch after putting it on, because I realized that if I was arching my back at all (and my routine had a ton of back flexibility moves), the tape would pull at my skin and come off in places.  This was not just a little uncomfortable but also really distracting because I actually felt much more conscious of my outfit.  So I decided to go without tape, but I also had nude, silicon pasties underneath.  I figured if I slipped a little, it would just look like skin underneath from a distance.  So try practicing your routine in it first, or at least try moving around as much as possible to make sure it stays in place and doesn't bother you!

April 18, 2012 at 8:09 am in reply to: Mighty Grip – am I doing this wrong???

I've tried almost everything for sweaty hands (including stuff for non-sweaty hands!) and by far my perfect combo is Tite Grip applied 30 min before performance and then Prince Tennis grip applied just before.  I also put Prince grip on the poles and that works for me (and I like to clean them beforehand with rubbing alcohol).

However, I've also found that choreography is extremely important – I will never, for example, choreograph a reverse grab/flying body spiral (or any one-handed spin for that matter) at the end of a performance.  No matter what I use, my hands are still going to become at least a little sweaty by the end so I just have to be very aware of that limitation, and it's definitely influenced the moves I prefer to do.  For the second half or so of my choreography I favor anything with an elbow grip over a full split grip or other moves that require me to rely on my hands alone.

For instance, I wouldn't do this move at the end of a performance either: https://www.studioveena.com/photos/view_photo/4ed50aff-bc7c-450b-9aa0-17b30ac37250

but I might do this one instead:

    hope that helps!

I pole with one friend regularly (we're both advanced students at our studio).  We practice at about the same time one day a week, every week.  I always make a list of moves to work on.  Usually I'll write down more than I expect to get to in case the ones I really want to practice don't work out.  As far as warmup goes, we pretty much follow our studio warmup routine together since we know it by heart.  Since we don't have to think much about the warmup (and cool down stretching), that's when we're probably the chattiest and talk about other stuff outside of pole – we're pretty good at focusing when we're doing actual pole stuff and the rest of our talking during practice ends up being about move mechanics if we're working on new/difficult stuff.  We usually don't do a ton of conditioning because we both do other stuff during the week and it takes up a lot of time, but we at least do some push-ups, pole-ups, and a few crunches and leg raises on the pole.  Our practices usually run about two hours long, but of course some days are awesome and some days we're really tired and only end up working for an hour.

I think it works so well because it's just the two of us and we're pretty much the exact same level and have practiced for so long together that we have a routine we're both used to, but I think it would be a lot harder if we tried practicing with other people.  If Aerial Amy doesn't respond to this post try messaging her – she organizes pole "Flight Clubs" for a bunch of people and probably has a lot of great tips! 🙂

Thanks everyone!  I did a test yesterday with the dye I had and a little experimentation.  It took 8 hours to get it the right shade, but I'm just happy it worked at all!  Next time when I dye the actual outfit I'll try getting the water hotter and increasing the concentration, so hopefully it won't take as long.  I'll check out those other products if I ever need to dye anything else- thanks for all of the info!

How do you climb after you do the first shoulder mount (as in, how do you get your body into position to do the next SM)?

To give you a sense of how long it took me to get it flat (although it's different for everyone and depends on how often you work on it – mine didn't start improving until I started doing it all the time), check out my pics (with dates) in this post: http://thepoleplace.wordpress.com/2011/12/31/december-update/

To prep, make sure your back is warm and well stretched.  Practice bridges on the floor and work on shifting your weight over your shoulders to give them more of a stretch and help strengthen them.  Another stretch I like: stand with your back to the pole (I put more of my weight on one leg and leave the other one slightly bent).  Grab the pole just above your head, and arch your back, looking up at your hands.  With your back still arched, slowly (carefully) slide your hands up the pole so that your arms are extended.  You should feel this in your back and your shoulders, and you might not be able to fully straighten your arms depending on your flexibility so don't push it.  If you're doing it with one leg bent, switch legs and which hand is on the bottom on the pole.  It should look something like this: https://www.studioveena.com/photos/view_photo/4f054d91-ee78-4ac9-82ec-127c0ac37250

Now for the crescent.  I don't grab the pole behind my back – I grab it behind my head.  As I reach back, I also tuck my head forward to get a better grip and get my hands a little higher so my head isn't in the way.  Then I push and arch.  Hope this helps!  Let me know if anything was confusing. 🙂

I also have this problem sometimes.  Once I'm all stretched out and warm, I feel like I should start practicing pole or something and I'm more likely to stay up all night thinking about pole stuff (not that I don't already do that sometimes!).  Or, I find I don't have the energy to fully stretch everything for as long as I want to.  If I stretch at night, I really like going the gym because I can just spend most of the time stretching on the mats and I'm motivated to stretch more than I ever do at home (and also fit in some conditioning stuff I might not otherwise do).  I don't know if that's an option for you but it works for me because then when I come home I feel like I can relax since I'm changing the envirionment I'm in; it's like when I get home, I can shut off, but if I'm stretching at home I'm not always able to flip that mental switch, and I end up staying up too late.

I had this exact same problem when I was in a recital in October – I had a hell of a time finding white shorts and I ended up buying a pair from BadKitty to go with their ribbon tie-side "shorts" (which actually have a lot less coverage than my normal bikini underwear – yikes!), but they were too revealing and transparent so I layered them over white boy short underwear.  Then that was also too transparent so I layered all of that over white bikini underwear.  Not the best look, but it worked for that one night and you couldn't tell from where the audience was sitting.  If I had to do it all over again though I would have ordered white pole shorts from Sweet Vixen Couture, but I didn't have enough time to order them by the time I realized that what I had already gotten didn't work.  Here are the ones I would have gotten: http://www.sweetvixencouture.com/catalog/item/8078536/8712968.htm

I have this one and I love it: http://www.target.com/p/GAIAM-Metro-Gym-Bag-Purple/-/A-12938264?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=Google_PLA_df&LNM=|12938264&CPNG=movies&ci_sku=12938264&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=

I like it because it is big enough to hold a lot of stuff (first aid, legwarmers, change of clothes, camera, shoes, grip, etc. but it's not too bulky (and it's cute!).  It has a zipper pocket plus one large and one small stretchy pocket inside the bag, and it has four pockets on the exterior – two big ones that snap closed and two small ones that velcro closed (should fit most water bottles).  And the whole bag zips up so your stuff won't fall out.  Plus, it has elastic on the bottom if you want to bring along a yoga mat.
