For me, breakfast hasn't changed.  I've become more health-conscious as a result of pole, and am moving towards more of a vegetarian diet (haven't eaten lamb or steak for years).  I try to eat more healthily during the day when I'm at work, and if there's a "morning tea" on at work, I now limit myself to one savory item and one sweet item, and I don't eat pies, pasties, sausage rolls etc. now.  I recently tried eating salads for the first time in my adult life (I am 57!)  I've always hated the traditional type of salad (can't stand tomato or beetroot, don't like cucumber either).  I still find it difficult to eat enough vegetables, but fruit isn't such a problem.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Pole Divas is more dance-focussed (teach in heels) and Vertical Fitness is more strength-based moves? I love both styles! Lisa and Ro at Vertical Fitness are two of my favourite people. I currently train at Bobbi’s in Perth and I think they recommend Pole Divas in Melbourne, if that helps?

    Hi there

    I am 57

Been poling 3 years and a bit (March 6, 2010)

Saw a demonstration of pole dancing at a Womens' Expo and thought it looked like fun

Why pole dancing and not something else? I wasn't actually looking for a form of exercise to try.  It just looked like a fun thing to do.  I've never been "sporty" at all – hated games at school (and have very unhappy memories of it), poor hand-eye coordination etc.  Did ballet as a child for two short periods, and contortion, which I enjoyed.  Pole dancing is special to me because I love everything about poledancing  – strength, flexibility, creativity etc. I guess I was looking (subconsciously) for "something" which was missing in my life. I think the fact that it could be considered a bit "naughty/shocking" didn't hurt, either!

My user name is a nickname that one of my ex-bosses used for me.  No-one else has ever called me that.  It's far enough from my real name that people wouldn't necessarily know who I am (though now I don't really care if they do or not!)

I think I must've googled and found Studio Veena.  Can't remember.

I'm on SV most days, mainly "lurking" in the forum and posting occasionally.  Probably about 10-20 mins a day.

Congrats 🙂  So pleased for you…I remember how much, and for how long, I struggled to get there.  (Took me about 8 months).

Samjane – what about Chinese pole? Or is that only for men?

My Mum had to have her and my Dad's adopted dog, Jasper, "PTS" in November 2010.  Fortunately Jasper never minded going to the vets.  Mum and I stayed with Jasper until the end.  It was very peaceful.  Not sure how it is in other countries, but In Australia, you can either go to the vet's or the vet can come to the house.  (This may depend on the vet, I guess).  The vet put Jasper in Mum's lap and we stroked him.  It's a two-step process, but your pet will not be in pain, they just slip away peacefully.  I loved Jasper even though he wasn't "my" dog, I and still miss him, but I am so glad I was there at the end.  It was the 2nd time my Mum has had to have a pet PTS but my first.  This was 2 months after my Dad died.  I like to think of Dad and Jasper in heaven/doggy heaven, pain free, and having lovely games together.

Welcome Haley! Enjoy your pole journey. This site is great, and you may soon find you’re as addicted to pole as the rest of us 😉

Paulette – who is RS please?

Vertical, my husband (HWMBO – He Who Must Be Obeyed haha!) is the same – he saw me doing middle splits with my feet on the wall once, and said that I would leave marks – so now I wear socks when I do that stretch.

MemphisKitten – I don't think it's anything to do with age, particularly.  I did contortion when I was about 10-11 years old, and could do the front splits, and lie on my stomach with my feet tucked under my chin.  That was over 40 years ago, and when I started doing flex classes again, about 2 years ago, I was more flexible than most of the girls half my age in the class.

I think flexibility may be, at least in part, hereditary (anyone else have a view on this?)  My Mum, at 85, is more flexible than some of the girls in their 20s/early 30s in the flex classes I go to!  I am now 57 and am maybe 2" off the floor in the front splits.  Middle splits, however, is a different story!  I think some people have front splits flexibility, and others have middle splits flexibility, but not necessarily both.  My friend who is 44 is closer to her middle splits than I am, but much further off in front splits.  Maybe it's to do with the way our bodies are built – I don't know.

Yes, definitely magnesium for cramp (I was advised by the Dr at the Sleep Clinic to take magnesium to help with Restless Leg Syndrome).  My husband gets leg cramps at night – he takes tablets called Magnesium with Cramp Bark.

Ajrt2118 – I am in a similar situation to you – i.e. I grew them myself – no implants involved 😉 I haven't noticed my boobs getting in the way particularly (but then I haven't poled without them!!)

I agree about the cute tops! I wear the Panache Cleo Jude bras for poling, with a Supre (for those in Australia) crop top over it.

I went for a sleep study (overnight) and was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome.  I was told to take magnesium for the restless legs.  I am trying to avoid the CPAP machine (mask thing) for the sleep apnea.  I'm currently using nasal strips which are like a band aid which you stick across your nose.  It's supposed to help keep your airways open, and it does seem to help.

Kyrsten, thank you soooo much – I just checked out your vid….I can do a deadlift inverted V from the floor, but have been struggling with doing aerial inverted V on a spinny pole.  I will try to do it the way you showed in your vid – I'm sure that's going to help me heaps!  Thanks again 🙂

I'm 57, started poling just over 3 years ago.  Went to class tonight, and had a great time.  One of the others in the class tonight is the oldest poler at the studio (she's 4 months older than me), and another who is 6 months younger than me was in another class at the same studio.  I loved pole right from my first lesson.  Pole is the best thing I've ever done!  I also ride pillion on my husband's motorbikes 😉
