Thank you all soooo much!!! I was really feeling like I owed this guy some type of explaination or something….. I'm done explaining myself to him!!!  Yesterday the owners of his building came over to my existing studio and had a little chat with me…. Enough is enough already!!!!  They proceeded to tell me that they were concerned because they may lose a renter now!  How is that MY problem????  I am soooo done with these people!  I hadn't thought of playing the attorney card, but I'm sure going to!!!

Part of the reason I'm so upset is because my business is very good to the community ~ We are always donating to the school fundraisers, the outreach center, local churches, and so on… So I really don't feel like we should be treated like this.  I know he is just one person, but in a small town it doesn't take much!

O well ~ I'm moving in so they'd better just get used to it!  It's worth the headache for the 2500 square feet of space and 14 foot ceilings! Yay 🙂  So… now it's time to go and buy some REALLY big speakers!!!!!

    Thanks Ladies!!!! xoxox

April 19, 2011 at 8:51 am in reply to: What do you look for in a Pole Fitness Dance Studio?

Just remember that you can't please everyone. Personally, I like to think I can, but I'm not that delusional! Normally I'm a real softie, but since being in business, I've developed a pretty thick skin! You will make mistakes in your business, there probably is not one studio owner out there who wishes she/he hadn't done something different in the beginning!

I would say above all, outstanding customer service is key in any business, and pole/fitness is no different! My studio is small, but my girls are very happy there. The studio is clean, my poles are SAFE, my prices are reasonable, and my students are comfortable with me. The fact that my studio is small has really allowed me to get to know every girl that takes my classes. I've visited other studios and gotten lost amongst all the poles… Not a good feeling!

Make sure your students know they can come to you with any and all concerns they may have! (This is where it's good to have the aforementioned thick skin) I offer free pole time at my studio where the girls can come in (for free) and play on the poles. I do not instruct or do any poling myself, but am there to help them if they want/need it. These "open pole" nights, as we call them, are the best time to get feedback from your students!!!! The relaxed atmosphere allows them to open up. As an owner/instructor it is your job to ask for feedback!!!!! Even if they know they can come to you with their concerns, they probably won't, so YOU have to ask! Open pole time is priceless!

As far as websites go, my website has BOTH music and flash which I didn't think would be an issue…..until I started reading this thread….. maybe I'll have to re-think that!!  Anyway, a clean, easy to navigate site is key!  I don't keep any studio pics on my site, I put them on my studio's facebook page ~ Otherwise the site takes too long to download.  I'm not a marketing expert, but I say put as much info on your site as possible ~ Even pricing! Even though my site has music and flash, it's very low key.  The music is soft and the slideshow (which is only on the home page) rotates thru 3 different pics ~ All black & white and simple. Visitors can also turn the music off if they want. I use the music and flash to create an experience for my visitors ~ Some will like it, some won't. Over-all it has worked well for me. Your site is going to be a reflection of your business so keep it tidy and neat!!! You should also put at least one picture of your storefront on your site so when students are trying to find your studio, they will know what looks like from the outside! My studio pic is on the 'about' page.

I'll stop rambeling now 🙂  This is a GREAT topic, thanks for posting it!!!!

Give it LOTS of time! I'm not sure, but I think P90X is progressive, meaning it's only going to get harder! I teach both fitness and pole classes and I'm in a constant state of soreness!!! Advil helps a lot. Make sure your stretching out REALLY good after you work out and get yourself a foam roller ~ They work wonders!!! Also, drink LOTS of h20 and eat plenty of high-quality protien to help heal rebuild those muscles! Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts helps too!

    List of high-quality proteins:

    Meat and Legumes

Eat a variety of high-quality protein such as lean cuts of beef, poultry, pork with visible fat removed. Also consume legumes with whole grains to get a balanced protein meal. For example, quinoa with adzuki beans, or millet with French green lentils or black-eyed peas with brown rice will provide complete protein.

    Eggs

Consume high-quality protein by eating eggs, low- or non-fat dairy, soy and sprouted foods. Each egg has about 70 calories and seven grams of protein. To make a complete protein combination, consume eggs with sprouted toast.

    Low-Mercury Seafood

Consume low-mercury seafood for high-quality protein and heart-healthy omega-3 oils found in fish fat. All seafood contains methylmercury as it is a byproduct of environmental pollution and is found in the smaller fish that larger fish consume. The EPA recommends eating up to 12 oz. per week of wild caught fish such as Alaskan salmon, canned light tuna, pollock or catfish. Limit consumption of seafood if you are pregnant or nursing.

    Yogurt and Soy

A cup of non-fat, Greek-style yogurt has 24 grams of protein and 120 calories. A cup of unsweetened soy milk has about 80 calories and seven grams of protein. Pour soymilk over oatmeal for a high-protein breakfast.

Charley ~ I got an email from PS saying that I "probably didn't have the stage leveled properly" and that  "That original Star Stand Alone works just fine."

I just wish PS would have spent a little more time developing their product BEFORE introducing it to the marketplace!  Obviously there HAVE been issues with the original SSA otherwise they wouldn't have had the NEED to "improve" it!  By the way, Kevin never even addressed the issue of my pole coming unscrewed!!!

I'm just going to cut my losses and save up for an X Stage!

@STL ~ I hope you get your new pole soon and that it works beautifully!!!!  Keep us posted!https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

OOPS! Should have asked my question BEFORE hitting the enter button….  Does anyone have a good way of cleaning your brass pole? The stuff I'm using leaves a residue on the pole. My pole LOOKS clean, but when I use it, the powdery stuff comes off onto my hands.  Maybe I'm using the wrong stuff…  Any suggestions???

March 19, 2011 at 8:14 am in reply to: Dancing VS Tricks

Well said Hotpinksugar!  A handful of my students are working exotic dancers and I always tell them to make their audience "earn" pole tricks ~ Really I just mean "make them pay for it" (and they will)!  If the audience is constantly seeing "tricks", they get used to it and they won't want to pay money to see them.  Please keep in mind that my exotic dancers come to me to learn moves that are going to make them $$$$, so the concept of making the audience "earn" seeing the advanced moves will not apply to everyone or every performance 🙂

I also tell my girls to "pick music that moves them".  Some songs lend themselves better to floor work while others are better suited for aerial performances.

All-in-all, I really hate to say that a "better" pole performance is one with (or without) "tricks" as I know there are dancers who are just beginning or (for whatever reason) can't physically perform the more advanced moves.  But I will say that the BEST pole dancers are the ones with CONFIDENCE!

I've seen some beautiful pole routines with absolutly no aerial moves what-so-ever!  If you do what works for you, and stick to moves you know and are comfortable with ~ You will amaze people 🙂

I have PS spinners in my studio ~ They are really smooth and super fast… I think they're a little too fast to be honest ~ They are also VERY slippery!

The BEST way to stretch your shins is to simply get down on your knees and sit back with your booty on your heels and your toes pointing behind you. It may seem like your not doing anything but sitting there, but trust me, you are! It's not a fancy stretch, but HIGHLY effective! I'm an avid runner and since I've been doing this I have not suffered any shin pain in over 5 years! I do it a few times a day, for about 30 to 60 seconds a time. I like to alternate between that and a "downward facing dog" to stretch out my calves and hamstrings as well 🙂

    Hey BMJ ~
There is a small mount that you will have to attach to your ceiling. It only uses a couple of screws so you can remove it easily (and fill in the holes) when you have to move. They will also give you a fake smoke detector to hide the ceiling mount when your pole is not in place. I should think your new pole will be safer than just a tension mounted pole because it will be attached directly to the ceiling.
If Robert told you there hasn’t been any complaints about poles falling or breaking, I’m sure he’s telling the truth ~
And with a warranty like that, I wouldn’t worry about a thing if I were you https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif
Can’t wait to hear all about it! Have a great day!
