Thank you all for the great insights! Sorry I’m responding so late, I just can hardly type on my phone and this is the first moment I’ve gotten to the computer and actually have some free time. That said- thankfully I was able to read your comments at the time! They were VERY helpful! My hamstring seems to be good as new now, all healed up.
@KelleyPerkins- YES to the range of motion strength training! That helped me to pay careful attention to my body and avoid unseen risks, and of course, get a bit stronger =)
@Serzi- It was such a relief to hear that someone else had had nearly the same exact experience! I took your advice to heart and kept myself cautious. Slow songs were a great suggestion. Thankfully I seem to be healed up within a month. I am glad I was able to take your advice!
@Grayeyes- Good call, there are a number of good hamstring discussions I found! Good lord, I’m sorry to hear yours was so severe and dragged on so long. I hope you are feeling better now! It looks like mine was a minor scare, but im still glad I took it seriously enough not to cause further damage. Thank you for adding your insights! Hopefully they will help someone else searching this at some point.

I first learned working in clubs as well and…wow..when i look back on the stuff many would do..,and way high up on the air…,and DRUNK.,oh lord. Joining sv a year ago really helped me gain perspective and while im still tempted to ‘just try’ some novel move after seeing it i feel like i can assess what is in reach and what is not (ahh shoulder mounts/dismounts…when will u be mine,..)

Revisiting already learned moves works for me too…u find little subtle variations. Good on you for getting yourself motivated! I did one of veenas strength training warm up routines (i think it takes 20 mins?) Anyhow ive been hitting an abreviated version of that…and even being able to ons more crunch up or squat feels good. I love that adrenaline kick from exercise. Rest of the time its just floating in pretty shapes hehe

I feel real comfy in scorpio too (albeit only in my dominant right leg. Left leg grip hurts since i dont do it enough) that said i always used to grip my foot or the heal of my shoe and that made me feel secure and like i could just relax in the spin. Lately ive been grabbing the pole behind my head (i think with arm opposit the hooked leg) and now im in love with that shape! It looks so much more curved like a crescent moon. I also notice i can stretch into the move more like that.

Yeah, a stripper pole needs to have…uh strippers. I actually haven’t seen the beyonce video, but I’m assuming she is leaning more toward booty pops than pole tricks? Honestly I find it weirder that pole dancing happens in clubs than that woman dance however they want to at home! Seriously if strip clubs ever evolve to the point of losing the pole (and I don’t think that’s entirely unrealistic ) I can already hear the people of the future saying “woman used to get naked on stage AND do crazy aeriel acrobatics high up in the air!”)

Woo hoo! I’m local too so I’ll be there (at least for the free stuff lol) I’d also like to meet up! I may be able to host low maintenance couch – surfer types. I live in walking distance to the French Quarter, but our house is an on going work in progress. (Although we do have a mighty fine tent the backyard 🙂 lol. I’m also happy to answer any questions about the city as well.

woo hoo! Can’t wait to hear about it! I also took a free intro to aerial and loved it. I saw a lot of overlap between it and pole, except to me silks seemed to distribute weight more and rely on more body parts with less stress on the arms. My favorite (and probably everyones) is when you get to ‘unwrap’ yourself and tumble down. I like the sense of learning to trust my body like that. Anyhow, no advice since I’m still real green, but plenty of shared enthusiasm!

Yeah, that is an annoying, poorly written article. But good for her! I used to juggle on the street & street performers of every kind get a lot of crap. (It’s just part of the job.) I’m glad she’s out there doing it.

I’m 29 and have not been very into exercising. Judging just from what you can see of women on this sight- YES! Definetly! Some of the women I most admire on here are 50+.
It’s also encouraging to progress & keep at it because every time you do it you feel really good, so even when you don’t get moves right away you still want to practice them for the adrenaline.

Wait, the 12 yr old won the lesson? Is that her older? (A bit confused…) I’d love to see that 12 yr old do pole, her moves are amazing.

Yeah, I have the same exact kind & I know what you’re talking about. Make sure not to over tighten it….I’ve re-adjusted mine 2 or 3 times now & can see how much spin I lost by overtightening to begin with.
(Also..mine is 11ft & was afraid of it falling…I have had it happen once, but the top crown part just got dislodged & the whole thing didn’t come crashing down. I’ve seen videos posted here too of that happening. Just do check ups on it.)

July 28, 2014 at 3:55 am in reply to: What is freestyle?

That is pretty much what I think of it as. One of the challenges in freestyle is trying to link movements together and make them flow. (I’m actually getting ready to upload a freestyle!)
Also you have so much variety to work with… all the different music and mood choices. A lot of people free style more as an expression & emotional outlet. Also if you prefer making routines you could freestyle and hit upon a really interesting movement and them build on it.
I’d like to hear more people weigh in on this. I really like watching my own freestyles afterwards…it brings in a visual element that makes a lot of sense for me (I’m a painter..) but I’m also curious if how I felt while dancing to the song is reflected in my movements. I get a lot of surpises out of that. Sometimes a dance will feel great while I’m doing it, then I’ll watch what I filmed later & it looks unsynchronized or just like a different mood than I was experiencing.
Freestyling just feels great to let go and move to the music. It almost feels more like dancing at a show where you get absorbed.

I’m curious how studio dancers work with it because I feel like I wouldn’t be able to fall into it the same with folks passing through.

I’m also curious…if you freestyle over and over to a certain song and find certain movements with different parts of the song and keep those and freestyle
around that do you consider that a routine or freestyling?
(hopefully not threadjacking here, just interested in the topic.)

Hey, I’m not sure how helpful I can be since I’ve never trained at a studio. Are you asking how much is acceptable safety wise? There’s the obvious precautions (like spotters, crash pads etc) but I’ve found Veenas lessons to err greatly on the side of caution. Many moves she teaches how to practice from the floor. (This has been really helpful for me, to figure out what is going where and really get a feel for the contact points). Another great feature is the ‘search’ button up top. I’ll find a move from Veenas lessons, work on it a lot, and then usually search it to see how other people do the move, or find discussion or ideas for combos etc etc. For self practice just pick something appealing to you within your range. Filming your practice for yourself is very helpful just to see how your doing moves & sharing them here you can get a lot of good advice from multiple view points. Anyhow, welcome!

Yeah, I can’t imagine practicing that first jump onto it (especially as a man. ouch.) @kate92 – HAHAHAHA! That’s hysterical. Maybe from now on if I tell people I do pole dancing and they say something about strip clubs I’ll go, ‘No, like this-” and flash em this video!

I’ll weigh in with another 45 mm suggestion. I’ve got a 50 mm TG (I definetly recommend TG for the grip) I’ve never actually tried a 45 mm but it isn’t hard to imagine that a bit smaller would create less strain.

Apparently sometimes my boyfriend gets wasted drunk, assumes my identity and gives rather helpful sounding advice. lol. (The night this was posted he came in the room & said ‘I posted something under your name on that site’ I was initially alarmed, now I’m feeling pretty impressed by how articulate this came off knowing how drunk he was when it was written.) Hope the hand is feeling better!

This is a really interesting discussion. GoldenDiva brought up a good point about social media….the thing with that is this technology is still so young we’re pretty much experimenting on ourselves. Hopefully we will hit some saturation point where we can no longer ‘out do’ ourselves or each other and simply be able to ‘do’ and focus and share that. I watched a pole dance video recently that was so over the top… from the set, to costume to non-stop crazy pole moves..it actually made no impression on me. It felt like melodrama. All the arts incoroporate a sense of balance and harmony, when one sees crazy tricks one after another, crazy tricks are no longer exciting.
Oh and thanks for mentioning Crystal Belcher…I just watched her performance and it’s really touching.
