X-Pole Spin Mode Problem. Help!!!

I finally got an X-pole XPert yesterday! After assembling it and carefully following the instructions, I can't seem to get spin mode to work. After I loosen the two screws, I turn the pole some with my hand and meet lots of resistance. Once I let go, it spins back where it was before. If I turn it too far, it makes a bang noise, almost like it is still extending. But the screws you undo to extend the pole are tight, so I have no idea what's wrong. Please help me! I would hate to have to exchange it after spending all that time putting it up. 🙁
