X-pert dents in ceiling...help?

Hello, I have had a problem with my x-pert denting the ceiling at the studio space I teach at. At first it was only a small circular indentation from the center of the dome. So, I cut a small square from a yoga mat and pace it over that space on the done before I installed it again. It worked fine until I was given permission to keep the pole up for an extended period of time. The adhesive from the mat combined with the pressure ripped the paint off the ceiling and caused a big dent. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I was thinking a piece of thick felt perhaps. I want to avoid plywood as the ceiling are already low and it not ascetically please to the space that we also use for yoga, personal training and massage. Thank you, Emily in Seattle
