Pole "stage" name

Runemist34 Previous Paid Member

Hey guys!

I was thinking about the fact that a lot of "sensual dance" classes encourage their ladies to choose new names, sort of a "stage name" that we can have fun with.

Even though I'm a writer, I generally have an awful time with names!  Especially ones for myself. What kinds of pole names could I possibly choose? There is a world of names, real and imagined, that I could use...and I get muddled with choices.

Some fun ideas that have been posed to me were things like...my first pet, and my Grandmother's maiden name. You know what I came out with? Dusty Hooker. [www.studioveena.com] kidding! Seriously, most of these ideas really don't work for me! Current pet and favourite food? Moe Pizza. [www.studioveena.com] to do with dessert is usually "chocolate" for me, and, well...I'm very...not chocolate. Sorry, I suppose I have a bias with that.

Anyways...do YOU guys have any fun names for dancing with? Even if you are not performing or anything, you could still come up with a name! Do you have any interesting/effective techniques for coming up with names? Is there something you look for in a good "Pole" name, rather than a normal one, or perhaps any other kind of stage name?

I picked my name by combining the names of two movie characters I felt drawn to - Holly from Breakfast at Tiffany's (classy, endearing and free-spirited) and Satine from Moulin Rouge (spicy, seductive and tragic).

...Or you can google "stripper names" but that tends to be less personal unless there's a name that really strikes you as fitting.

Holly - I love that idea. Thanks! :)

We always used your frist pet and the street you grew up on.  Everyone's always came out hilarious except mine.  Oddly enough I liked it and it is what I use!  I had a terrier named "Kiki" and I grew up on "Generes Ave."........... Hence, Kiki Generes!
Feb 16, 2011 from Birmingham, Alabama, United States

Charley is a combination of my first and last name but I need to come up with a last name now lol as Charley Pole isn't terribly believeable.

The first pet and street game - I love it - I'm "Frisky New York" using that method.

Charley, I always wondered where it came from!  Mine is ridiculous, as I am, and I would like to change it...Pole(becuz I like to Pole) and Lush..becuz I also like my alcobolic bevvies[www.studioveena.com] together, mind you!

The other method, street and pet name, would give me Sammy Sexton..which ain't bad (we lived on Sexton side road in Essex)...
Feb 16, 2011 from Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Sammy Sexton!  I love it!!!!!!

"because of my love of alcoholic bevvies" LOL - All I can think when I read that was "VODKA!"

I like Jenn Polelush but still often call you JennRN - like your name is JennRN, hahaha.
Feb 16, 2011 from Royal Oak, Michigan, United States
Ooh this is fun!! Hahaha mine would be Copper Willys. Sounds more like a sexy toy!

I like Holly Satines idea! Holly Golightly is one of my all time fav characters!!
As a writer, do you have a favorite book character? I'm sure you'll think of something...

Everyone's name is so nice! haha I want to use Quinn as mine because I really like the character Harlequin from Batman but someone already had Harley and (at the time) I didn't know anyone that had Quinn. Then I found someone else had chosen it too, which isn't such a suprise, but I wanted something special haha. Others on my list were Sephira and Jasmine..

See I try to choose something related to stuff I really like - like I love birds(especially owls) and trawled through species names but nothing sounded much like a stage name haha. I've kind of given up finding a stage name but if you get it right it adds so much to your performance (I think).

Some cool stage names i've heard are Felix (duh), Roxy, Cleo, Chilli, Daisy, Rocket, Bunni, Ryder, Harley, Sapphire, Shimmy, Missy etc.etc. think you just go through words and find something that fits your personality!!

Ollie - if you like birds...have you thought about Robin?

Kiki: My name, if we went with first pet and first street I lived on (lets say, first street I remember living on!) is Dusty Barclay. Personally, not really sexy, but kinda funny :P

I REALLY like Sammy Sexton and Copper Willys! More for their comedic value, but still...you girls could pull them off!

Ollie: I've heard of a million names and they're all pretty similar. I had to come up with my own Burlesque name, and it took me FOREVER. I had to wade through all of those, because there are so many Roxy's, and Kitties, and all kinds of things!

I'm somewhat interested in the idea of taking two characters you're particularly drawn to and mushing them together. Gives one a good sense of what they're going for, considering the character traits are already there.

For reference, my Burlesque name is Patricia (from the song "Patricia the Stripper") Wiggles. My husband and I came up with it. I was wiggling for him.

Generally, though, I think my Burlesque self and my Pole self are different, they come from different parts of me. I'll have to consider!
Feb 17, 2011 from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada

You could use a favourite move in your name, like dove or swan or gemini. Maybe not lunchbox or crucifix though :)

Fun thread, I now have two options if I ever need to get a stage name :)

@VinterVild....I had to LOL at Lunchbox..that cracked me up...no, not too sexy

i LOVE the idea of taking a name that combines of the names of characters you like! my would be ... oh, should i really say that here? don't want anyone to steal it ;)

no, seriously, i have to think about that. hopefully i'll come up with a pretty name! a combination of the first pet and the first street i was living in (we call this find your porn-name, lol) would be the worst name ever. wutzel deaf-mute (streetname translated). [www.studioveena.com] can't really use that, haha.

Scarlett Honey aka Lola Grace

Such a great idea about referencing favorite film/literary characters for names... But my fave heroine is Elizabeth Bennet, (P&P by Jane Austen)... not exactly a sexy name :P

Hmmm... I love Bronte novels too... but Bronte beach in Sydney was not one of my faves - im def more of a Coogee gal :P haha Sorry im thinking out loud now... ah its so hard to find the perfect combo isnt it!
Feb 17, 2011 from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

so my pet/street name would be...Chelsea Illinois.  Sorry sounds more like a porn star name to me!  LOL

Lulu is just easy.  My first name, everyone has a hard time pronouncing and writing it. I cant tell you how many times its been all types of messed up, one of the many reasons I go by Lulu or just Lu.  But Ive really thought about this and Lulu sounds so sweet and innocent and then its perform time and WHAM!  Im not what they expected!  LOVE it!
Feb 17, 2011 from Hanover, Maryland, United States

If we go strictly pet/street mine would be Black Kings.  But I prefer to use the middle name/street, which would be Elizabeth Kings, and I like that much better.

Mine would be Tigger Port Grat if I did the pet/street thing. I've been trying to come up with a stage name that suits me for ages, the first one I thought of was based on my birthstone, which was Sapphyra, but I took a "What's your hippy name" quiz on Facebook the other day and got Phoenix which I kinda like. Still don't know if it's really "me" though.

Loved reading your stories/names! Let us know what you come up with Runemist!
Feb 17, 2011 from Channel Islands, United Kingdom

These thread have got me considering having a pole name now! For me pet/street comes out as 'Posy Broomfield' which I'm not sure if I like or not. Kinda sounds like an 1800s east-end lady of the night. I think it would be a good burlesque name but doesnt really suit how I approach pole. Not that I have any real 'approach'.

Any ideas yet Runemist?
Feb 17, 2011 from Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

If I used the first pets name and street I would be Brandy, HC box 57! [www.studioveena.com] lol but I could go with the closest town I lived near instead of street.....then I would be Brandy Regan ....that shouts porn star
Feb 17, 2011 from San Francisco, California, United States

hell my first pet name and street would be Meow Burger!!! ha h aha
Feb 17, 2011 from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, United Kingdom
Layla Duvay

So my porn name (pet/ street) would be Sam Darling--not bad actually! I think part of the reason I bought the house was the street name. I still love it!

My burlesque/ pole name is Layla Duvay. I came up with it years ago and I still like it. I make NO distinction between my burlesque self and my pole self, lol!

Meow Burger?!?! That's AMAZING. Like, it's not terribly sexy and stuff...it's just...amazing because it is. Yes, I know, I'm weird.

The trick for names coming from book characters and whatnot is that I read a lot of fantasy, and most people wouldn't know what the hell I'm on about...AND most female main characters, for some reason, are more...um, "innocent" or "bitchy," rather than sexy or fun or whatever. OR, they are "unattainable," like the elves in Lord of the Rings or whatever...totally a different race, totally unattainable, and thus...not sexy. So there isn't much to get from them! It kinda sucks.

And then, well, romance books, they're all perfect and sexy and whatnot, and they aren't very unique. It's a thing with romance, trust me, I don't know why it works...it just does.

Strangely, I like the name of Felix, though obviously I wouldn't be using it. It's so...soft, and exotic and fun. The sound of it makes me interested, and you can do so much with it! I don't know why I get this stuff from names...I just do :P

I love you guys...I didn't really expect to get such a response! I love names and the mythology behind them. Hell, I love mythology too ;)

I'll keep you all posted!

using the pet/street name method mine would be....are u ready for this....BUNNY VANBUREN!!!! screams porn star to me, LOL
Feb 17, 2011

I'm loving the pet/street names! [www.studioveena.com] would be Midnight Mavista Acres (it wasn't a street, it was a huge cul-de-sac of acreages in a small town). I'd probably shorten it to Midnight Acres, but it still sounds more like a place to live than a name. LOL
Feb 18, 2011 from Redcliff, Alberta, Canada

Really?  I like Midnight Mavista....  But that's just me.  :)
Feb 18, 2011 from Charleston, South Carolina, United States

To me, it is interesting enough what names people come up with as their "Studio Veena"-name ... I guess I could use Ginger as my pole-stage-name as well, but what about the Cake? :D (I called myself like this because ... well, just because I love to eat it! And apparently I'm a redhead, too, lol)
Feb 18, 2011

@Beautifulfreak: Meow Burger?? I actually quite like that name, but I agree that it probably wouldn't make a good stage name [www.studioveena.com] But I think you could just dismiss the Burger (is there really a "Burger Road" in your town?!?) and keep the Meow, and combine it with something else. How about Lady Meow?

The book "The S Factor" by Sheila Kelley has a "bonus"section at the end, where you can find some suggestions to choose from, to find your stripper name - most of them seem to shout stripper! or porn!, but some combinations sound quite decent.

There are categories like: jewels (ruby), nature (dune), biblenames (jezebel), aournd the world (asia/dakota), booze (brandy, [www.studioveena.com] animals (lynx), flowers, spices, things you like to eat or touch (peaches, velvet), or colours.

What could also work is the name of your (grand-grand)grandma - oldfashioned names sound very beautiful sometimes, there are not many people nowadays who are called like this, and they're classy.

Hope this helps, Runemist!
Feb 18, 2011

lol...I grew up in a town where all the street names were named after known communist leaders... My stage name would be Fröya Mao Zedong. Maybe not exactly that appropriate for pole dancing?

These are all great!!

If I went with the pet/street name, mine would be Chesai Slaytor (at least the first street I can remember living on). But I have an outspoken, dirty-talking alter ego when I drink sometimes that I've always referred to as Lola, so I could always go with Lola Slaytor haha!

I've never really given this much thought but it's fun!
Feb 18, 2011 from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
If I use the pet/street thing I'd be Schaefer Gordon....more porn I think!

If I used my grandmas name I'd be Rosina...kinda cute but not a pole name??

My SV name CodeAngel comes from my love of HTML/CSS...bit geeky so I added the angel lol.

This thread has got me seriously wanting a pole name now!!

Perhaps I shall find as many name-maker-upper's as possible, and put them here...we can all give 'em a go!

I think Jenovefa sounds beautiful, it's kind of exotic, and sounds just like the sensuous fluidity of pole-dancing. In my opinion anyhow!

Oh dear, this thread has me going "awesome" and howling with laughter at the same time!

Ooooh, nooooo, in my language, Jenovefa sounds so granny-ish [www.studioveena.com] I also remember my grandma's girlfriend's name was Scholastika (no joke [www.studioveena.com] No, no grandma names for me I guess. Gotta come up with something else :)

Pavi, I think Jenovefa sounds very pretty, too. But you could shorten it and call yourself Jeno!

Lola Wantz is my "stage" name...I've always loved the song, Whatever Lola Wants by Sarah Vaughn. But that old Levi's commercial just made it extra sexy and bad azz! I'm a beginner but I definitely plan do do that song justice on a pole.

Porn Star name would be.... "Titan Alexander".... very buff and grande for a gladiator but so not seductive for a chick name!

This is a cute thread!

@Lola Wantz - there is actually a Chicago burlesque dancer that has gone by "Lola Getz" for the past few years - her tagline / intro line for shows is, of course, "Whatever Lola wants, LOLA GETZ!" :) You two should get together!

My porn star name is Ginger Dale. Sounds kind of classy and old fashioned.

When I did burlesque before, I was Apple Venus. If you have awesome taste in music, you should know where that comes from... :) But that was ridiculously hard to network; the other girls would call you by your real name, and you'd have to remember who you told what to... blah

Now I'm thinking of doing a pole act in a burlesque show, so I want to use my real first name for ease of use (Meagan) and then something sexy as a faux last name. My faves so far are:

Meagan Whiskey, Meagan Wolf, or Meagan Cassidy... Thoughts?

Other dark, sexy, mysterious words that sound good with Meagan or Meg? (I REALLY wanted to be Meagan Shadow after American Gods, but I didn't want to seem like I was trying to be / compete with the amazing poler who just goes by Shadow.)

I like Meagan Whiskey - because it makes me salivate for a cold beverage haha. I kinda like Meagan Wolf too.... or if you want to go really dark you could be Meagan Fatal.... as in fatal attraction... lady fatale... ?? Umm im trying to think of other dark seductive names.... Meagan Mists....? Meagan Indigo... Meagan Onyx (coz the stone is dark)... Nar I like Meagan Whiskey the best so far :P :)

Mar 25, 2011 from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
The issue I have is that my 'normal' name already sounds like a stage name! I'm Kitty (well, legally I'm Kathryn, but only to my grandmother!), but so many pole dancers/burlesque artists/etc. use 'Kitty' as a stage name...I feel like shouting 'hands off my name, bitch!' LOL
I've changed to using Kath in real life now, to try and sound a bit more 'grown-up', but that doesn't make an interesting pole name.
Mar 25, 2011 from Witham, England, United Kingdom

Hehe... this is a great thread!

I have never been able to come up with a good performance name. Ever.  I dont know why.  I tried out Violette Skye, and its just not me. I have had lots of suggestions from people, including Poison (bc I love that band), Inertia (which I really disliked, but love that Massive Attack song), etc etc. There has always been something that makes it hard for me to adopt a name and  feel comfortable becoming that character.

A burlesque group that I perform with forced me into choosing a name, so I do aerial burlesque as Bijou Blanc, but I can't find myself in that name either.  But something had to go in the program. :)

My pet/road name would be Footloose Thomas...? yes. I had a cat that my siblings and myself named Footloose. Seeing it typed out makes me feel like a weirdo. bahaha.

I recently updated to my nickname given by my bff back in high school. But still not sexy or pole-ish. Also taken in various forms by other polers. (i.e TripleBexxx)

My pet/street name would be Gracey Morten... but I've always heard the Middle name/Street like MissKitty suggested. For me that would be Lynn Morten. Neither are too bad... maybe I should go with that?

Thought about going with my newly found fav drink Dirty Martini, but that's maybe too burlesque and def not believable

Oh and @Meaganoff -- I like Meg Whiskey!

Going with the Middle name/Street, my husband ends up being Herbert Sagewood. TOTAL Porn Star name!

I've never had a pet in my life, so I don't have a stage name using that method at all!

But using the middle name/street combo, I'd be Elizabeth Sycamore. Not particularly sexy... In fact, it's distinctly middle-aged housewife! Hmm, back to the drawing board I think.

I like Terpsikhore, but it's a. unoriginal (as the greek muse of dance, there must be a million people out there using Terpsikhore as a stagename) and b. difficult to pronounce.

Haha, at our studio we encourage using alter-egos/stage names, so in my first class when they asked me who I was I went with the first thing that popped into my head -- "Ginger", because I have bright red hair. Not very inventive, but it stuck like glue and I don't think half the people at the studio know my real name. LOL

Someone also gave me the name "Cherry Bomb" (I think all of my names go with my hair), which I will reverse for my super-stripper moments.

My pet/ street name works out to Shiera Douglas...... not sure if it works...
Jun 7, 2012 from British Columbia, Canada

The first pet/street naming thing totally does not work for me. When I was 3 or 4, I got a red-ear slider turtle for Christmas, my first pet. I was young and I named her Dumpy. I lived on Angelina Circle at the time, and while Angelina is pretty, nothing can survive with Dumpy as the first name.

I recently came up with a stage name for my new youtube account, to keep pole things separated from my personal videos. I came up with Lorelai Jane and I love it. It's similar enough to my real name to sound familiar, but still different enough to be, well, different. I'm kind of a plain Jane kind of girl, so that's where the Jane came from. And, although I love Gilmore Girls, the name Lorelai is actually from a couple of rock songs by Styx and by Scorpions, but spelled different.

I don't have street names where I'm from.  Mine would literally come out to Hammy 91 St. [www.studioveena.com] I had honestly never given much thought to having a stage name, even my SV name is my real name haha.  But if I could honestly have a stage name, it would totally be Charlize Harris.  I like Charlize Theron and Harrison Ford and put their first names together.  Had to axe off the "o" and "n" because it made the name sound better without!

haha mine would be Sundance Frederick

I  go by organic angel here b/c we are  made of organic matter and I think that we are all actually angels:)

On FB I go by Star Smith(feel free to add me). I always checked into hotels w/ my hubby with the last name as Smith when we first met. I loved getting our reservations for dinner with that name(I had an "alias" first name too.) We stayed at really ritzy places and I felt like a celebrity. I figured it would be "cool" just to check in that way ;))

When I first started FB I only used it to find businesses from time to time b/c many people use it as their business web page. Only recently did I begin using it. I was anti FB for a long time b/c of stalkers and such. I also feel robbed of privacy at times (while at others I like to shout out certain things lol) Anyway..."Star" just came to mind and my husband reads it as "starsmith"...like blacksmith...all together. So I imagine that I am starsmith, shape shifter of stars and energy...kinda like what we do on the pole. Shape shifting of energy...

I love this!  I need to change my SV and stage name.  I went with Pole Raven because it was suggested to me and I needed a name right before a contest (my real name is unique and I didn't want everyone in town knowing I was in the contest).

Pet+ Street= Lightning Spring -- this might be nice in reverse, Spring Lightning

Middle + Street = Ann Spring...meh

Some really cool orgin stories here! great thread! I've been wanting a stage name/alter ego pole name but I havent been able to think of one. I love Beyonces alter ego name Sasha Fierce, would love something catchy like that but my brain hasn't thought of anything cool yet.

Calipolepixie came from #1 i'm in California, #2 i like pole #3 pixie because tinkerbell is my fave disney character. The end. lol Lame I know.

My nick name since middle school has been "Feb." But my stage name has been Caprica for the past three month. Unfortunately, being a reference to a syfy show, I don't think I'll stick with it for fear of being sued :p

If I did pet/street, my name would be Sasha Cheyenne. Which is alright, except Sasha is traditionally a Russian BOY name.

my username/stage name came about at a party. my friend took me to a party at one of her friend's houses and they had given her a nickname and wanted to give me one too so I felt part of the group. the guy was like "well you are persian, so we should find something that rhymes with that!" so he sits there thinking of what rhymes with that and all of a sudden came up with the word excursion cuz one of his friends drives one of those. So I became PersianXcursian. I modified the spelling a bit

If I went with the pet+street thing mine would be Smokey RIver - I kinda like it. There's nothing better than sitting around a campfire at the edge of a river in the middle of nowhere after a long day.

When I was stripping I went by Rayne or Rayne Makur - because I love playing outside during a thunderstorm (and when you're on stage it's always nice to have someone "make it rain").  I'm sure there are lots of people out there who only know me as Rayne - and I'll still answer to that as quickly as I do my real name.

My stage name would be just as on here. Lyme Lyte! Due to the fact I have been struggling with Lyme disease and also because I have always liked being in the Limelight! I am a bit "outgoing" some would say. For instance getting up and singing and dancing at a concert in front of a few thousand people a few months ago. Shook it, loved it and I wasn't even drunk!

I walked into the ladies washroom before pole class and this was the topic they were talking about  as well (picking a pole stage name).  They selected theirs nick names from their favourite candy bar or candy so when I joined into the conversation mine name seem to be Taffy due to my liking of salt water taffy.  I thought it was a cute and original way to select one. I would love to use my surname Gunn but that doesn't really suit my style. Other ideas include using Dragon (Im obsessed with them and just started a major dragon tattoo back piece, yay!) and my first name Lex.  But I always think of Sexy Lex,  that isnt me either.

But if I change the rules and use me and my dads last name, with the dog Nikki, it would be Nikki Neve - That I like actually :)

I got mine from the back of Sheila Kelly's S factor book that had loads of options. I decided on "Scarlett Summer" and it's really helpful to get out of my head sometimes and channel my inner vixen! My BFF uses "Bambi bourbon" but we picked these names after our first class so I feel like with time I might "change" mine.

In the book Sheila says she picked stormy because she was going through a stormy time of her life so I like to think of the name reflecting how you felt when you started pole!

Jun 11, 2012 from Aalborg, North Jutland, Denmark

I don't think anyone on this thread mentioned being compared to strippers Oliviaaa. The whole point of this thread is all in fun and it's about stripper names.
Jun 11, 2012 from San Francisco, California, United States

This topic is about stage names. Many people use stage names and alternate titles for themselves. Writers sometimes use different names to write under. Dancers, magicians, musicians, poets, and performers of all sorts perform under different names than their own. Yes, that includes strippers and pole dancers.

It is one thing to want to reduce the stigma of pole dancing by trying to educate misinformed people who want to lump us all into one big group of "strippers", regardless of what we actually do, even if it is, in fact, stripping. I do not think it is a bad thing to refuse to be compared to strippers. It helps get pole dancing out there and more mainstream and not something that takes place in seedy clubs (or even nice clubs). Doing tricks and learning to pole dance well is an entirely different skill than those used in clubs, as I've learned from reading discussions on SV from the girls here who do work in that profession. No one wants to be called something they're not, or grouped into a stereotype just because that's all someone knows.

So what if we want to create an alternate persona to use while we dance? So what if we want a little anonymity, an alter-ego, or whatever? I do not see how wanting a good name to perform under has anything to do with being a "stripper" vs. a pole dancer.
Jun 11, 2012 from Houston, Texas, United States

By the way, I totally respect the girls on here that do work in clubs and other places. It's hard work and I don't envy you. I don't think I could ever muster up that kind of confidence, have those kinds of people skills, or not let the negative get to me. You girls are truly amazing!

My point is, that the two don't have to be related. And just because we pick out stage names doesn't mean we're contradicting ourselves.
Jun 11, 2012 from Houston, Texas, United States

I use my 'dance name' as yet another aspect to my costuming and character as a burlesque and aerial performer. My real self is shy. She is NOT a dancer, but someone who pretends to. She doesn't perform for anyone. Because she is a nerdy scientist with no real dance training who is too worried about maintaining a professional persona to be anything other than under the radar.

Alice B. Heartless on the other hand, wears animal print and lace.  She has no problem staring an audience in the face and owning her moves. She'll eat you alive. THIS is why I have a dance name. Because it lets me be whoever I want and it makes dancing much less vulnerable. For me, it's one of the only ways for me to perform at all. And I LOVE performing.

The reason this has nothing to do with stripping for me, is quite simply because I don't strip. Never have, most likely never will. And that's just a personal choice for myself, one that I don't bother even pretending to make for other people.
Jun 11, 2012 from California, United States

What's the difference? Answer: The audience.
Jun 11, 2012 from Houston, Texas, United States

I love the idea of a stage name but I don't have one.   I haven't felt the need to step into a charachter yet, but still think it could be fun.  I like the idea of my pole dancing being an extension and representation of my everyday self, which includes all aspects of me ranging from my sensuality to my inner child.  I wanted so bad to take any kind of dance as a kid (so unique for a girl, right?) but didn't have the opportunity.  So by default, pole is now my outlet and I've been treating it like any other form of dance, focusing on the mechanics, form and posture, ect, but it's a huge goal of mine to work more on character and emotion and to someday compete or perform in a pole showcase.  My stage name(in my own mind, not that I've ever used it in a formal performance) for hooping is Cynnth.  I guess that could work for pole too.  Maybe when I get more into performance and playing a character I'll find a stage name that suits me.

In response to Oliviaaa, I don't think that 'stage name' has to necessarily mean 'stripper stage name'.  Entertainers of all kinds come up with stage names to set them apart/ make them easier to remember, and differentiate their everyday selves from their performance character.  Even mainstream actors and recording artists take on names they weren't born with.

Where pole dance is concerned, not all pole dancers care that they're compared to strippers, but some do.  It's a personal thing, not something that can be stereotyped so broadly.  For a lot of us the differentiation is just a matter of clarity, not something we get offended over.  A pole dancer whose performance style is primarily sensual and erotic might clarify that she's not a  stripper, but may not be offended if her dancing is compared to a stripper's style of dance, and may even consider it a compliment.
Jun 11, 2012 from Saint George, Utah, United States

EXCUSE ME?!? Are you a member of the same community I am here on SV? Because people on SV seem to "get it" and you clearly don't.

I don't perform for any audience besides my classmates and occasionally friends who want to see what I've learned. There is nothing wrong with embracing your sexuality or pleasing your partner with a sexy dance (hence lapdance). Some on here do this professionally. Many don't. I have NEVER taken off my clothes while dancing, so by definition, I could not possibly be a stripper.

I don't dance with heels because of weak ankles, but I would love to because I think they're pretty. Heels make your legs look so long and this is the one time that you can wear ridiculously high heels and not feel silly at some point. It's like a girl's guilty pleasure for some.

Also, the limited clothing is for grip purposes. If skin wasn't showing to contact the pole, we'd slide off. You can't exactly learn some of these tricks in sweat pants and a t-shirt. Running shorts and a sports bra suffice for many, not teeny "outfits", although they are also a guilty pleasure for some.

Many of us do this in our homes only, making clubs unnecessary for us to do something that we love. I don't think any of us would deny that clubs are a very important portion of the roots of this sport/hobby, but that doesn't mean we need to be treated like scum because of it. Calling us no different than strippers is to be narrowminded.

So every single burlesque dancer is now a stripper because they go by a different name?  Some of us perform at events as hired help.  I sure as hell am not going to have an announcer give my real name nor have it posted on flyers that are passed out/posted/advertised.  I am not doing it for any other reason than personal security.  Ask some of the people who have performed and things that have happened.  Hell, I get creepers on facebook that cannot even see anything about me but my profile picture (which, however is not pole related).

Please get a life and quit trolling our site.

Personally it doesn't bother me to be compared to a stripper. I simply correct people when they assume that I am, just because I am not one, but I am rarely offended by this unless they start making rude comments.

A long time ago when I used to go to pole lessons, one of the girls in my class was a stripper. She was also a single mom of two who was struggling to make ends meet providing for her kids because her deadbeat ex-husband left them. She was trying to put herself through college and didn't have the time to work 3 jobs. But the one thing she could do was dance. She said she actually enjoyed stripping and it made her feel strong. She didn't feel sorry for herself, and though she never advertised the fact that she was a stripper, she didn't hide it either. She came to class for some "me" time and to make friends and learn a trick or two (I think the girls in their club just danced but didn't do any tricks). I got to know her as a person the brief time we were in the same class, and I thought she was a pretty cool girl, who, but for a twist of fate, could have been me.  Honestly, I don't judge. There's a story behind everybody and I think strippers probably have a much more interesting story than I do. And really, it all boils down to all of us just having a passion for pole. Whether we choose to do it athletically, artistically, for an audience, with clothes or without, should it really matter to another pole dancer?

As a personal choice, I might strip if I were dealt the same cirumstances in life and was backed into a desperate situation a well. I don't know. I wish I had enough confidence to know. If anyone wants to see, much less pay to see my alter-ego "Slimer" naked complete with food baby and F.U.P.A. then maybe I just might. Lol! I just know that the next boyfriend is gonna be hella lucky that I have some secret skills up my sleeve

As a former exotic dancer and now ' just' a pole dancer I believe that I am qualified to give the opinion that the two are COMPLETELY different. Yes it is true... there is lap dance, a pole, sexy costumes, 'stripper shoes' involved BUT the difference lies not just with the audience- it lies within the dancer themselves. When I was working as an exotic dancer, I danced for SOMEONE ELSE. I danced for money. I danced to be sexy- FOR THE MEN who were paying me. Now as 'just' a pole dancer I dance for ME. I dance because I love it...because it makes me feel sexy, confident and free. I finish a workout sometimes and truly feel like I could fly. Pole dance has reshaped my body after having a child and given me incredible strength and confidence. Working as an exotic dancer is a JOB, And obviously there is an element of nakedness involved. Pole dancing does not involve nakedness- we need the minimal clothing to stick to the pole. There is such a massive difference, I wish I could put it into words better.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the ladies (or men) on here from wanting a stage name. We are PERFORMERS. PERFORMERS HAVE STAGE NAMES. Think about it- most singers have stage names- actors etc.....Many of the pole community film themselves and create videos for here or on youtube- they are PERFORMERS....A good example is Jenna Marbles on Youtube. She is a very famous youtuber, but her real name is hardly Jenna marbles right? why? because she is an entertainer and performer!! In addition to this, some of us want to get our name out there as pole dancers or have aspirations to turn pro in the future and this will protect our privacy.

I love the idea of creating a stage personality when doing any type of performance. It can be so hard to share yourself with an audience through dance, song, or anyt type of performing. Sometimes creating that stage personality and giving them a name helps. My days of performing have come and gone and while I have my doubts about performing again in the future if i did I think i would create a stage name and build upon it. :) I would probably pick something with KiKi in it

I beg to differ on the men getting down to their tighty whiteys.  Any man who poles on a METAL pole does, any PERSON who performs on a neoprene pole (ie Chinese pole) does not.

Look up Josiah BadAzz, David Owen, Ricky Phoenix, Philip Deal, Steven Retchless, and any number of the guys on this site.

And then look up Rebecca Star on her new pole.  It is a Chinese pole and she poles in a body suit.  Her performances on a metal pole are skin bearing.

Do a little research before making accusations.

Ok Poleshimmy, lets see you do a jade splits with sweat pants on and a shirt on. then we'll see how necessary minimal clothing is. The reason guys can get away with wearing more clothes is because they have more muscle than us and it is easier for them to gain muscle.

I've been toying with stage names for ages!
The pet.street combo would be Max Coalbrook which is more dirty porn star than pole dancer!
I do like taking just Brook though hhmm?
Thinking about other categories, Merlot is nice, I could be Melissa Merlot hahaha

I took one of those classes in Vegas and had to come up with a stage name immediately.. everyone was going with Destiny and stuff.   I chose Luxery ... first letter same as mine and I've thru a lot medically so its a suprise that I can even begin to do this... I don't want to be the average girl anywhere... I wanted to be different and sought out..... my cert has "Luxxxury" as stage name lololol

Lets see, pet / street = Marshmellow Madison.

Not so sure about using that moniker.

Here are a few of my options based on some of the above combos:

Mitty Neininger (maybe for a WWII film)

EmmeLu Salt (for a spy based porno)

EmmeLu Christy (for a take on Dr Zhivago)

Gummy Bear (for a cartoon version of a porno)

Champagne Gummy (for...I'm not sure)

EmmeLu Gray (my favorite for several reasons)

My sister picked my Veena web name because it is my birtstone. The original spelling was already taken, so I used Saphyre instead. It sounded mythical.

My pet/ street name would be Ginger Lake, which is a pretty good porn name!!

However, i have an alter ego when i do fitness competitions, and her name is Lolita. It helps me get into the mindset to be fierce and flirty and own the stage. So far it has worked and i think i will stick with that.
Oct 22, 2012 from San Diego, California, United States

My pet/street name would really be a decent "stripper name" but not anything I would use at home (which for now, is the only thing I do) is Bridgette Dehil. (Dehil, pronounced D-hill) lmao.
Oct 22, 2012

@Stoneycook, you could always turn Marshmallow into Marsha/Marcia - Marsha Madison isn't so bad!

I've come up with two names, both related to my red hair - Ginger Snap or Blood Orange. I think Ginger Snap would be a cute burlesque name, if I did burlesque - heck, it's probably already taken. Blood Orange, I feel, is a little more original - and touches on the PAIN part of pole, LOL! Plus, mmmmm blood oranges.

As for the "classics..."
Middle name/Street name - Angelina Pekin. Yawn.
Pet name/Street name - Koko Allen. Not so bad - but Koko was a boy dog, and I feel Koko/Coco variations are pretty common for these kinds of things.

I like trying to mix it up, though, if strictly following the rules turns out to be a bad name - I've lived on many streets  and have lived with many pets over the years, I'm sure there are some good combos in there. Too bad so many of my pets were males, though!

I'd also say almost any name can end in something like "Lane" or "Lee" and sound good. One of the streets I lived on was Chimney Lane, that's not too bad! (Up for grabs for anyone who wants it, I'm sticking with Blood Orange.)

If I were going with pet/street name mine would be: Cabby Media...Hmmm. Neh better go with the combination of  my first and last names: Sarward...Hmmm. That sucks too. How about Muffie Chotchky. Yes, I believe that sounds like me!

@Pankake.   You made me smile.
Of course my 3rd generation kitties were named Indiana and his twin brother was Parnelli.  Thus I guess Indiana Madison or Parenlli Madison would be an acceptable alternative.

Glad it didn't come across the wrong way, stoneycook.

Now that I've actually LOOKED at your profile which I obviously skipped yesterday, LOL, I think you could skip the pet/street thing and use a stage name that reflects your diverse dance background. Maybe borrow from, or create a combo of, the names of some of your favorite ballet performers, sort of like the people at the top of the thread with favorite actors/characters?

Just a thought. I feel like I have to suggest *something* constructive after my gaffe. ;)
Oct 24, 2012 from Cincinnati, Ohio, United States
Mine would be Bear Hillcrest. Yikes! Good thing I am a super beginner and not a male pornstar XD
Oct 25, 2012 from Milwaukee/Madison, Wisconsin, United States

Going by pet/road name I'd be (going with first female pet, we had a gazillion male pets when I was born) Pepsi Drove!
My nan's name was marjory, but here nickname was Peggy. My birth flower is a rose, so that's what I'm going with for the moment. I have no middle name so can't do that one.
At the moment I'm choosing between Peggy rose and Pepsi rose. I like my actual name - Carys, but its not really pole dancer name material. Xxx

My pet / street name would be Maxi Old Castle (translated the street name). I definetly won't go with this...
My favorit movie character is Poison Ivy and my granny's maiden name is Sun Spring (also translated). But any Kombination of these words also sounds very stupid.

Elektra Vallens

I can't believe I missed this thread until now!  For a long time I had difficulty coming up with a stage name.  The pet/street thing comes out to "Blizzard Darlington" which def sounds like porn to me.  Then I was doing some research on languages (Linear B, the writing system that Greek was written in before the Greek alphabet existed) and realized that Elektra is my real name, Amber, in Greek.  I ended up getting so into it, I now have a small tattoo of "Elektra" in Linear B. As for the Vallens part, it comes from the movie Blue Velvet- it's the last name of Isabella Rossellini's character.

So there you go: Elektra Vallens is my stage name, although I prefer just "Elektra."

This thread was SO MUCH FUN to read through!! It definitely has me wanting to give myself a pole name. If I went with pet/street, I would be Jasper Highland. Kinda porn-ish if you ask me. LOL I'm definitely going to start brainstorming!!

Jan 7, 2014 from TX, United States
Hey guys, I'm new here :)

I'm also thinking about a stage name but there's so many names I like, it's a nightmare trying to narrow it down. I want something normal sounding but a bit different (if that's possible haha). I like the idea of using favourite characters. The name that's calling out to me most is Luna Belle - Luna from Harry Potter and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I've googled it and Luna Belle is actually more popular than I thought but there's not hundreds of people with the name. So to make it sound a bit different I wanted to add a unique last name to it, but I don't know what :(

My pet/street name would be Tilly Preston haha

Great thread.
Barley Keswick is pet/st - hmmmm.
If I was a drag queen I would like to have 2 personas: Juanita Maneater, a feisty Latina housewife and Helena Handcart, an upperclass Englishwoman who doesn't give a rat's ass and is always drunk.

[has discussed this too much with camp gay friends]

If I had a performance name? Liberty Spinner.
Because I feel freedom when I'm flying and spinning round.

I actually really like the name Luna Belle for a stage name!

What about Luna Belladonna?
Belladonna means beautiful lady; it's also a plant which causes the skin to flush, heart to race and pupils dilate - mimicking the effects of sexual excitement. Elizabethan ladies used it to look beautiful - it's a deadly poison in large doses.
