Last night in class we were working on our butterfly to flatline & I couldn't get my butterfly! Every time I would get my hands in position my top hand by my knee never felt secure. I tried over & over but I just didn't feel secure enough to get into the butterfly. Maybe I was just psyching myself out or am I just doing something wrong. Any advice?

If you could post a video of you attempting it, that could help us veneers access what the issue might be. For me it was fear, once I got past the fear of doing it (which took several months mind you), it became my fave move :) Give it time, some moves will take longer than others to gain the strength & confidence to execute. Just keep practicing :)

I really think its fear! I'm going to practice it Saturday & if I can't get it I'll post a recording.

Have you tried different entries into the Butterfly and are you using a split grip or forearm/elbow grip? The Basic butterfly will give you more security when first working on this move, you enter from caterpillar, so you could try working on that first. I'm guessing you're using a Gemini entry right now? If you use a caterpillar entry the hands will already be in place before you move the legs. It's good to try both entries though. Thanks Veena. I will try to the basic butterfly so maybe I can get the feel of it first then work my way to the butterfly.

I notice sometimes people first learning butterfly might lean to one side of the pole. I know I did. If you don't have access to a mirror, play with left/right weight balance in caterpillar.
The way I learned was on my opposite inverting side b/c that's my strong arm when I pull into it. Try inverting on your opposite side and hook your outside leg turn your body fully in line w/ the pole and push out w/ the bottom arm on the pole:)
One thing about butterfly--if your shoulders are further away from the pole than your hips, butterfly is almost guaranteed to be wobbly and not secure. You need the triangle created by the bottom hand through your shoulder to your hip, then from hip to leg on pole. That will help balance the weight distribution of your butterfly and hopefully help those hands feel more secure. Good luck! Butterfly's a pretty move! :)

Thanks everybody for the advice. I will most definitely use it! CapFeb I did find myself leaning to one side of the pole. Organic Angel I do think I would be more comfortable with my strong arm up top but I'm going to have to practice inverting on my weaker side :). Polegirl I do remember pushing my shoulders out further than my hips. How you explained it made so much sense! I'll let you all know how my butterfly training goes!

After spending all week practicing my butterfly I finally got it...3 times in a row! Thanks for all the advice. I will post a pic as soon as my instructor sends it.
