Transition from static to spinning pole....?

I recently started dancing with a spinning pole. I can do a great amount of tricks on a static pole, but am finding it hard to transition. I use so much momentum to spin that when tried on the spinning pole it's out of control..especially stopping myself from the spin. It doesnt look graceful at all and is quite intimidating. I feel like I'm going to fly off lol. My climbs and poses are getting easier, but can do no spins whatsoever. Any advice would be great! Thnx

Try not using all of the momentum! It doesn't take a big swing or a lot of power when you use spin mode. "Nice and easy wins the race" :o) Good luck on starting spin mode! It does get easier :o)

I have tried spin couple of times & I dont like it but eventually I do want to learn on spin mode though. you will get it, it just takes time, practice & patience

Just take it slow and easy! You can always build up speed later. Try both directions, and moves on both sides. Some poses work better moving backwards, some are better moving forwards. Some things are easier on spin, because the pull gives you a little bit of weightlessness, but some things are harder because it tries to throw you off. :P Like most things in pole (and life), everybody's experience will be different. Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself either, you will likely get thrown a few times but everybody does. Oh yeah, and you always feel like you're spinning faster than it looks to anybody else. lol Good luck!

I have to say that once I started spinny pole, I never looked back. I don't really like to do static spins anymore. As everyone mentioned, you don' t really need any momentum. Just pull yourself up and the pole does the rest. It is an awesome strength builder and is easier on the wrists and forearms. (Althought stretching both of those afterwards is still a must!) Veena's tips are perfect, so make sure you check it out!

I'm super beginners at spin mode because I had practiced on static mode for so long. I wanted to try out spin mode since a lot of tricks and moves looks so beautiful on spin. Unfortunately for me, I had the same issues you did where I'd spin so fast I felt like I was going to get tossed off the pole due to momentum and end up against the wall or something. I still struggle with spin mode and trying to figure out how much "lift off" I should be using inorder to get a nice amount of spin that will last and last and last. I haven't found out that perfect amount of lift off yet. Best is always to experiement! Good luck!

I posted on the discussion a few days ago pretty much the same thing, I find it incredible difficult even just holding the pole makes me feel like my hand will slip off! Its funny tho what aerialamy says about filming yourself i did that after someone on my post said to film it so they could see what i was doing and its completely true...you feel like your going so fast you could take off when actually just going just normal speed!! After I figured this out for some reason it doesn't feel as bad now. I managed to do 15 minutes yesterday granted only holding for 10seconds or so at a time but it was easier. Good luck!

One of the first things I was told when I hopped on a spinning pole was that the closer your body is to the pole, the faster it spins, and of course the further away your body is, the slower you spin. For those times that you feel like you're going to fly off, try sticking an arm or a leg out to help gain control again.

I have to take anti-nausea medicine before spin practice 🤮 😀 Herbal tea with ginger is also supposed to help.

I get super dizzy on spin mode! It's been a major problem for me preventing me from spinning too much which is very disappointing. I can't take standard anti-nausea medicine as I'm allergic to it. Also anti-nausea meds can make you drowsy so you really shouldn't use it unless you find non-drowsy formulas. I found one at the health food store which also helps with dizziness, not just the nausea and doesn't cause drowziness: Hylands motion sickness medicine. There is also a product available in Canada (not FDA approved so you you cant get it in the US) called Vertigo Heel. This works great also. Ginger only helps with the nausea, not the dizzines, which is still good but not going to help with the whole problem. You do build up resistance if you can tolerate getting there. For me, Iose the resistance very quickly. If I stop practicing spin for just a few days it's back. Also adrenaline really helps with dizziness - I seldom get dizzy if I'm out at an event and just having fun not thinking about it!

I rarely worked on spinning pole and for some reason got a bee in my bonnet about doing an entire routine on spinny (I posted it here on SV if you want to see it 🙂) a few months ago. I was in a weird place as a dancer and it provided some BIG change that was helpful for me. At first it was a hurl-extravaganza. OMG. But it got better. I actually took small doses of non-drowsy Dramamine and that helped--though different people react very very very differently to it so use caution! You will learn to control momentum--others here have posted great tips. Pay special attention to going into moves slowly, don't use your body momentum the way you would on static or you're fighting a losing battle. Also, remember that any time you need to slow down, you'll want to extend something, whether it's an arm or a leg or both legs or both arms. It's amazing how quickly you can slow yourself down by doing this! Good luck! I have a newfound appreciation for spinny work these days and have been keeping at it for fear of losing the resistance I got.
