Stupid spiders!

Hi everyone. So, at the moment I have my xpole set up in my living room. The space is plenty big enough however, I have to compete for time/privacy to use my pole. It's so frustrating. I have a ginourmous attic with 12 foot vaulted ceilings that I had planned on making my dance space. But I moved here in the fall and come spring it turned into spider kingdom up there. They freak me out so bad I can't even bring myself to go up the stairs. It's big enough even to get a second pole to keep one static and one spin. Does anyone have any ideas for getting the spiders to move out so I can have my dance space back? I've searched google and aside from bombing which isn't a guarantee, I can't find any solutions. People have recommended a flame thrower lol, but I would like to keep the walls in tact. XD

Clean out the attic, spray the entire attic, especially the corners and any nooks and crannies between the beams with a spray that is formulated to kill spiders, sweep everything out and get a dehumidifier. Or, hire an exterminator.

Two words... Bug. Bomb. Make sure you get the kind that kills spiders. But be prepared, there will be dead arachnid bodies everywhere! Spiders you didn't know you had will be dead. But then you can vacuum them up, sweep down the webs, and have a new pole space. Also a tiny tip. Paint. My cellar was a scary spider hovel and I got sick of it. But even after killing the spiders and cleaning it still felt like the same old scary cellar. So I painted. I picked a bright yellow for the walls and used a nice grey sealer/paint on the floor. The space feels totally different. No more creepy feeling when I go down there. It's a new, fresh, usable space that I have reclaimed from the 8-legged creepy crawlies!

D: I know how you feel! We have lots of spiders where I live and they like to invade my room They've been in my bed and clothes, and they like hanging out on the wall next to my bed. Its so annoying I get the fly swatter and beat them up. Block off every nook and cranny some of those old houses have bad flooring and they can get in on the sides. My grandparents pretty much just laid carpet down and didn't fix the sides of the walls so mine get in through that way.. Keep a fly swatter handy

I'm not sure about how it works in the US, but I know that in NZ and Australia you can hire an exterminator to get rid of them. They're not that expensive and I know that here they have options that repel spiders for up to 12 months :)

Ultrasonic spider repelling devices are quite readily available (look on Amazon) and are not expensive. They can keep large areas spider free and can be left running all the time.

I looked up ultrasonic spider repellants and it seems like they're a scam product and that studies have shown that ants and spiders were unaffected by them. Kind of like those ultrasonic bark control devices that are supposed to stop dogs from barking...they don't work!

I don't have any kind of arachnophobia, so my approach may be a little less... um, extreme, than a bug bomb and whatnot. For me, I really like spiders for what they do. My bane is mosquitoes, and as I live in a very humid area, there are LOTS of very big mosquitoes. Spiders eat them, catch them, keep them out of my house... so, I'm never unhappy to have a few around. As long as they don't touch me! Since it's pretty much almost fall now (at least, it is here!) you should be safe to go in and start cleaning up. If there are lots of them, and if they've been there a while, you'll probably have quite a few cobwebs and normal webs to clean up. This will deter them from building again, especially if you're diligent and keep up with cleaning them away if they reappear. Giving everything a good wash will also help out, as spiders are looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful to stay, and cleaning is often not what they like! Floors, walls, ceiling- if you can reach it, I'd say, clean it! Just a mild blend of water and pine sol, or something like that. Painting is a good option as well, as during the process of paining, you'll most likely close up a lot of the nooks and crannies that they're coming inside from. Also, it'll brighten up the area! Just living in the room more, with lights and movement and all the things you like to do, will decrease their interest in being there. A few may stay, but it's quite unlikely that they'll be in your way (and, if they are, you can clean up their homes again). I hope you find a way that works for you :)

Wow, thanks everyone for all the replies. I realize that a bomb or exterminator is the easiest option, but I figure, if it's toxic enough to kill them then it's toxic for me as well. Correct me if I'm wrong though. However, painting sounds like a great idea. It's a partially finished space so maybe you're right about it sealing up nooks and crannies. Atm it's just the dark wood beams. A coat of white to clean it all up would brighten it a lot. And then I'd be able to see them if they still got in. I'm not going near them though lol. I'll send my hubby up for that. Also, it's not that I'm terrified of them I just think they're gross and don't want them or their webs on me. Same goes for any bug really. I do appreciate their purpose, as long as they do it outside XD. I just can't imagine trying to practice and concentrate and a spider plops down on my face. I'd freak and hit the floor. I'll see how cleaning and painting works out. Thanks again for all the input :) You guys are awesome!

Have you tried a "green" exterminator? We have one in our area who has sprayed our home before. Sometimes we get earwigs really bad and it totally takes care of them. And BONUS your house smells all minty for a day. He wasn't any more expensive than a regular exterminator. We didn't have him come spray the cellar because a bug bomb was $10 and I was in a hurry (didn't want to have to wait for a time he was able to come). Also, it seems like once you reclaim a space the spiders stick to the corners. They don't like high traffic areas. And if a spider plopped on my face I'd probably have a heart attack so you are in good company.
