Hi, I am a very beginning dancer. I have the opportunity to get a used Lil mynx pole that spins but is stainless steel. Do you think it is too slippery for a newby?

I know someone who had one in her basement and she said it was very slippery... combined with cold basement... it wasn't great, but it was useable. So think about where you are going to use it and how warm you can keep the pole. The only SS I've been on was Platinum Stages, and I liked it a lot, but they have a reputation for having a grippy SS. Also... how good of a deal is it? For me my 1st pole was a 45mm Chrome Xpole sport (static only) that I got used for a very good deal. I used it until I outgrew it and then I sold it for the exact price I got it for. So it served its purpose. If I felt like I was going to loose money on it I would have just got my dream pole to start. I was just nervous spending that kind of money on it when I first started and having it go the way my treadmill did :P
I have a Lil mynx ss and I really like it. I think it depends a lot on your body chemistry.
My first pole was a Stainless Lil Mynx, and I live in a somewhat cold, and very humid climate. It got better with age, and for sure warming the pole up was definitely necessary!! I think it's perfectly acceptable for a newbie, because it'll be gentler on your hands (spins on static pole won't pull your skin quite so much), and it'll teach you about the trials of grip ;) Haha

Also,someone in my area is selling a pole dance safety mat. I will be in a carpeted room. Is the mat a good idea?
Mats are always a good idea, but they're especially helpful when learning new moves.
I am a beginner too and learning on a stainless xpert x pole. I did look at the others when I got this one but as we had the same ones it class I thought it made sense to go with what I knew. I like the pole though although I tend to find that my hands sweat which can make the pole slippy. Have you had a go on any poles at a studio to see what you like best?
Sarah Ann, my studio has stainless poles. I was hoping that I would do better on my home pole if it were made from a different material.

Has anyone ever had a copper pole? Husband got it for me. Seems okay, slippery when cold though! I guess they all do that though.
I've never heard of copper! Interesting. What brand is it? Are you sure it's not brass? I hear brass smells like pennies (copper) :)

We needed a 12' pole to put it in our shop, and they were pretty expensive, so he got a 12' piece of 2" od copper pipe and built if for me. So, I know it is copper. I read that copper and brass are basically the same, so it should be okay. After 3 years of waiting, I am not complaining!

Pole finish is a very personal thing. In my opinion, being a newbie shouldn't factor in to the pole finish. It is more about the climate, how much you sweat, and where on your body you sweat. I would not get one unless it has both static and spin modes. I would also research the major brands - xpole , lil mynx, and platinum stages - to be sure you are getting a good deal before buying it.
