In a forward splits, is your back supposed to arch or is it supposed to be rather neutral?

I can only share my personal opinion and observation since I have no training or education/certification in this area. That being said, I can share my personal observations. I have seen square splits where the focus is to keep the spine upgright and shoulders back with light tension in shoulders pulling them back to open chest. I have also seen square splits where there is a huge focus on doing contortion like back placement to create a dramatic arch. Personally I focus on a straight spine with my shoulders and neck positioned over my hips. That creates more body weight over the hips area to put more downward force on my split. Veena is ACE certified... maybe she will be able to offer some expert opinion! I know there are some experts here... maybe they will chip in.

On my left splits, my back arches automatically. My hips are square.

Chances are, if your lumbar spine (lower back) really arches while in a forward split you may be compensating for tight hip flexors. A slight arch is normal, its always best to maintain neutral whenever you can. 🌸
Cool beans. Guess my hip flexirs need more stretching.
