Spinning Layback

I've been doing pole for just about a year now and am probably a solid intermediate with some advanced skills as well. I'm going to be doing a routine in a recital and I would like to do a layback on spin. I don't see any lessons on this move, am I missing it? What suggestions do you have? Thanks for any help and I am so glad my instructor shared your site on fb awhile back. I've been a fan ever since. I use your warm ups all the time, and your instructional videos are so helpful, they have helped me nail many moves we've worked on in class.

What do you mean by layback (everyone calls things different names argh)? I'm intermediate spin fan not expert and am being pole-nerdish at moment very painstakingly relearning all my inverts after falling and quitting following extended butterfly crash out a few years ago. So I can't offer proper expert personal advice but can likely point you at good tutorials/advice from others as I have been researching obsessively last few months - can you post a pic or vid of someone doing the move you want to try?

I just videoed the layback move on static. I've ever uploaded a video here before, so not sure where to go to link it to this discussion. When I click on the 'add files' button, it doesn't show videos, only pictures, guess I could just take a picture....I'll try that.

Hello! Ok I call that CAR - cross ankle-release, although obviously you're gripping with thighs. On spin it can be DANGEROUS: cross knee release is safer. The lady who fell and is now paralysed fell from CAR. It is lovely though and I spin in it. But carefully and very controlled and never high. There are many threads and tips on it and a great Veena lesson. Aerial Amy blog suggests students walk their arms down from advanced plank. Veena teaches it after advanced plank too. I got 2 great tips recently which enabled me to get it back - for me tipping legs up high before leaning back - getting the thigh grip, legs turned in, ass locked, abs, inner thighs, pelvic floor all locked hard - then lowering top half down works. As to spinning, it is an extending away from pole move so your spin will slow or stop as you do it unless you enter at warp speed. I go in from Swan, with straight legs - a tucked leg(s) swan will spin you faster. And make sure you can easily crunch back up from it, over and over, as in spin mode it is harder to pull back up - and you may be going too fast or be too high to put hands to floor. If you can't crunch up and layback ten times on slow spin with crash mats do not attempt move in routine - it really is dangerous if yiu lose leg grip - your head and neck will take the force of your whole body falling.

Thank you! Great advice, and video. What you did in the video is exactly what I want to do, and I figured it would be pretty dangerous doing it on spin. I definitely don't want to be going fast, so I'm wondering if it would be a nice way to end the routine, on a slow spin. I can easily get up from the layback, I actually have a tougher time going from the layback to a handstand and then feet down. Also, I don't have the cross knee holds down well at all. For some reason that is much more difficult for me to do than to do the straight leg, thigh hold on this move, and other moves actually. I wonder if it's a flexibility thing. I'm older and haven't worked on my flexibility as much as I probably should. I've never done dance or gymnastics or anything before, so this is all brand new learning for me. @TropicalPole- No more, You're scaring me!!! Hehe, but it's true, better safe than sorry. @fjwinter- I just posted a freestyle video with a spinning CAR. (to Radiohead) Personally I LOVE CAR, I feel more stable in it than planks. I squeeze the hell out of my thighs. I wonder if it's not an easier/more comfortable move for people with meatier thighs/butts (if there's less there, there's less to grip with? I don't know). ANYHOW--- what I figure might be useful for you is pushing your spin from the ground with your hands. I really like doing that because you're already in the position prior to spinning rather than laying back while spinning which feels scarier. Definetly liked tropical exit out more. In mine I'm obviously unprepared. (I was just so happy to be back on the pole after a week or so off!)

What a great song to pole to, BagLady! Loved your routine. It looks about at the same level that I am at on pole. I am going to try starting the spin with my hands, that would be a great way to start practicing and getting the feel of the position in spin, and then practice getting back up out of it as well. Liked your style, very similar mine. Thanks! P.S cute doggies :-)
