I don't see too much people do the spatchcock, but I think the most common way is from an inside leg hang/hook, which is how Felix first did it. This is the only way I've done it personally (even the only way I've tried it). So I went from a scorpio, and a video says more than words so have a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHSS0EhjUuQ The biggest pointer I have is to not try to hook the lower leg while the pole is still behind the upper shoulder, it won't work. Spare yourself time and energy. I did the mistake of trying that both when I learnt it in 2010 and then also here in 2012 because I had forgotten over the long time... So what I'm saying is, given this entry, that you have to bring the pole from behind the shoulder to behind the neck before hooking the lower leg. This requires that you'll take you whole body weight in just your arms for a few seconds. I felt like I was lifting my body off the pole and then slid it in. When the second leg is in place you can (depending on flexibility) pull the pole further down towards you waist. I remembered I had seen a tutorial by Sergia Louise, it's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07gZ41joJCo I just skimmed through it now with sound off and I haven't tried her three ways. The first of them is rather similiar to the one I did, but she is coming from an Aysha and hooking the ankle instead. The advantage of doing it that way instead of from Scorpio must be that you don't need to move the pole from shoulder to neck because it's already behind the neck here. I don't know how well it works trying it from the floor, I assume that it will be difficult to stand there in a staddle and move in without the body starting to turn, but I haven't tried. Sometimes I've seen people getting into some kind of Spatchcock from an ordinary box split up on the pole but they usually keep their feet on the pole and not their ankles. I recommend ankles. Sergia's variants are all behind ankles too. Good luck! I haven't touch this move since I recorded that video. Doing spatchcocks every twice year is enough for me ;)

Yes, I worked on it from a scorpio, my suggestion is to use the skinniest pole possible! lol Mine is not great at all, I couldn't let go, and I haven't done this since, but this was the closest I've ever gotten. I learned it for the 1st on a 50. I promise you the diameter size does not matter. It's because of the points of contact. The phone won't let me see who but someone said you have to make sure the pole is up around your neck with top leg hooked & you're taking the weight on your hands for a second that is true. Biggest mistake I've seen people make trying to get into it is not having the pole near the neck at the critical time. While diameter of the pole may not make a difference, height will. Ideally you need at least 9 ft to really be able to get it b/c if you start too low on the pole gravity is pulling you down and you rum out of room before you hook the bottom foot the foot hits the ground.
Yes height is good to have, I always started at the top of my (short) pole. But pole size also matters. Think of it this way. In a straddle with the torso laying flat on the floor the backside of your ankles and the front side of your torso will be on the same level. When you are on the pole your ankles will instead have to be at a torso width + a pole diameter above that front side of the torso. So in a properly done spatchcock you'll be in an overstraddle that increases with pole size.

I asked felix about this - she showed me from the floor and from scorpio. If you want to try from the floor, do your side straddle, double cup grip the pole (think of making a bowl with your hands and grip the pole like that) and try to thread your head through by pushing your bum out and bend your head down to the floor. From scorpio - what everyone else has said already :) You can also shoulder mount (using princess grip) and hook the pole with the knee instead of hooking the ankle and as close to your shoulder. Then lower the grip of the lower hand into a cup grip and try get that bottom ankle on to the pole. I'm constantly in awe of girls that can spatchcock, hope you get it soon!

So IDK how to make the picture appear in here but it's at the top of the board right now and also on my page. I drew a picture of what I believe to be the points of contact and so shows why the diameter is not as big a factor as people may think. I want people that don't have access to a smaller diameter pole to take heart b/c you don't have to have less than a 50 to get it. No I don't think I could do it on a pole fatter than a 50 :)

I don't think I ever said it can't be done on a 50? I was stating that indeed a smaller pole can help if you don't have super amazing flexiblity. The tiniest bit of increased distance on a larger diameter can create a challenge😉
Thank you so much for all your tips! :) I've seen some really advanced ways of getting into a spatchcock but I cant do those advanced moves yet. However, I really feel I have the flexibility to do the move. even if I still have to hold on with my hands, I just want to try it out. I will be having someone help me though. Not gonna do it alone. I sooooo wish I had a 38 brass pole on my x-stage! my hands just want something smaller than a 45

Someone was just posting about this on one of the fb pole pages too and I'm interested in some advice, not because I especially want to be able to do it on the pole but because I'm curious about the stretching involved. I have a middle split and a pancake in straddle so I thought I'd give the spatchcock a crack from the ground, just to see. However, when I was getting into it, I didn't feel it where I expected to (ie. similar muscles to the straddle) but instead ended up tweaking the top of my hammie on my lower leg and I remembered (too late) someone saying to me once that they'd popped their hammie doing the full move. So, is it about straddle at all or more hammie? I've been having problems lately with a tight feeling in my upper hammie anyway (I have to work hard to maintain hammie and butt looseness because I'm a runner, particularly on hills) so suspect that may have been a major contributor to the tweak but yeah, anatomy of spatchcock info anyone?

I can get my legs behind my head (not back like she seems to but i have no middle split yet so i have never ever tried the spatchcock (and wont be for a long while)
Oh yes megsmith, that would explain why I hurt myself - whenever we do what my stretch teacher calls the eating feet stretch (which is like the first part of that behind the head stretch, but pulling the foot towards the face rather than behind the head), I feel physically incapable of getting my leg even close to my face, let alone behind my head:/
I think this is a trick where pretty much "anything" could happen. Which is not so strange when you think about that you're going to squeeze yourself into an overstraddle on a pole. So try to do an overstraddle on the floor and see how that feels, it should be closer to the spatchcock feeling than an ordinary straddle. I think pains can turn up both here and there depending on our bodies and how we are tweaking ourself into place. I had some hip joint pain for about a year after doing it. It was nothing severe but I felt that it was there when I did middle splits. Felix says that the grip of the lower hand can be damaging for the wrist. I didn't feel anything there, but to each their own pains. So my advice is to do a really proper warmup, '(over)straddles and middle splits stretches. Don't make many attempts at the same occasion. And especially if you start feeling something odd, stop and leave it until the next training session or so.
Lina, when you mention overstaddle, are you referring to straddle position with a yoga block(or some sort of lift) under each heel. like a pancake stretch? that's kind of what I've been working on. thanks! :)
