ok guys - here's a good one: if i shoulder mount, i have no trouble with inverted crucifix, butterfly, worm.. i can hang upside down in front of the pole all day long... regular invert, for some reason i can NOT get myself locked in front of the pole.... somebody help me fix this. it id driving me NUTZ !

You could be using more momentum to SM than you realize.....but when you go to invert your trying from a dead stop and struggling? If you could post a vid that would be helpful. 😉 Be sure that your placement it right on the invert...if your hands are too high or if your not close to your pole this can make inverting rough. You may just need to do some Abdominal and Scapula strengthening for your invert.
hi v -- you are right, vid would be helpful. will see if i can post... but meantime, i can invert just fine. can hold upside down in invert just fine. moving around front of the pole for crucifix, or butterfly, or ANYTHING feels soooo much less secure to me in standard invert than shoulder mount invert, and that is what i need to fix... please tell me i'm not the first with this issue !!! 😉

hm, videos always help lady. i think the main difference with getting up in the SM versus regular invert is placement of hands- i recall you had some trouble getting your hands out of the way of your knee/leg grip in regular invert... is this a related issue? maybe your legs never get a great hold with your hands in the way, and thus you never feel fully secure?

Oh your saying once you get up there you don't feel secure!! I get it now......When you invert do your knee go far past your knees or just barely?
hm, videos always help lady. i think the main difference with getting up in the SM versus regular invert is placement of hands- i recall you had some trouble getting your hands out of the way of your knee/leg grip in regular invert... is this a related issue? maybe your legs never get a great hold with your hands in the way, and thus you never feel fully secure? actually, i can clear my hands well in a regular invert. knee/leg grip from there is fine. clearing hands for knee/leg grip from chopper is a problem (just recently realized), because i have a very flat chopper.... just figured out i need to work on getting my V more vertical, so i CAN clear my mitts for knee/leg grip from that position.

Oh so your going from a V invert then up on to the pole? yeah, trying to work on leg hook from there, but leg too low for good hook ! mitts in the way .... so now it is back to the abs drawing board to beef em up more so my V is more updside down than flat.... ugh !

Jayjay- I can invert and have strong hold and can let go of my hands. But when I tried to go to the other side of the pole, I freaked out. All the sudden, I don't feel safe EVEN though I am. I was at a pole jam and the people around me were saying I was secure and tried to help me position myself. The underlying issue for me was fear of falling. So I practiced falling correctly using a guide. (If you are curious on how to do this, go to http://www.poletopia.com and sign up for newsletter (the article will be sent to you) If you can get a spotter, even if just a friend, maybe they can help position you. I also had to practice breathing so I could be calm. I can physically do moves, mentally is when I get in my own way. Visualizing it in your head can help too. Veena gave me that tip. 🙂 Hope that helps (at least knowing others deal with this too.)

I just signed up for the newsletter to see what they say.... In my studio we do have spotters, and also a pole crash mat, so I think it is just a matter of working it over and over ? Yes I am serious.....if you look at any of my first videos I never do an invert!! I didn't realized it existed for quite sometime LOL I did shoulder mounts and half handsprings I learned the aerial invert before I realized I could do it from the ground!!! Your inverts will come....its not the be all and end all though. 😀 🙊 🙊
thanks Veena -- you are one of my pole idols, so hearing what your earlier experiences were helps me keep things in perspective: can't get all things on the first go ! 😉 just so odd that getting in front of the pole upside down feels so different from one type invert to another !
I got my first inverted crux from a SM as well. With the basic invert I had problems when bringing my body to the front because I felt as though my leg position is moving ever so slightly. This is how I corrected it. I SM, hang into inverted crux, THEN move my body to the side into a basic invert position, stay there for a while and then tried to move my body back in front. Once you get the motion of moving your body from the front to the side, movign it the opposite way seem s a lot easier. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Jayjay- You said " so I think it is just a matter of working it over and over ?" Yes, for me anyway, once I get used to the move its no longer an issue. Every new inverted move I attempt I feel "fear" again but I try to remember 1. I know how to fall properly 2. I can overcome 3. It takes practice to feel comfortable. Fear is natural reaction to many things, the key is acknowledging it and then pushing through it. I'm hoping in time I wont even have that reaction to new inverted moves, but even if it doesn't go away I know it will pass as I work through it. I started inverting not long ago, so time will tell. hey jayjay, it probably feels awkard b/c you have your legs crossed differently when you do a regular invert into inverted crucifix vs. a shoulder mount into inverted crucifix. people usually get used to crossing their legs in a particular way (left leg in front, right leg behind or right leg in front, left leg behind) so when you end up doing a different type of invert it will catch you off guard and something won't feel "quite right". to fix this, i just have students learn inverts on both sides (especially inverted crucifix) that way they get used to having their legs crossed both ways and can find the muscle memory/activation for it. i had to do this for a while and still practice b/c it still feels weird to have my legs crossed opposite of what i am used to. its a small thing but it does make a difference
thanks anngiern ! i'm a right leg behind girl, no matter what 🙂 i'm pretty sure my issue is more psychological than anything else, so will go back to basics of just invert/move around front, and keep repeating till it feels like a walk in the park 🙂 appreciate your pointers tho !
