Does anyone know which pole size is used in national pole competitions? Is there a specific size deemed the industry standard for competitions? Thanks ahead of time! Spent the last 4 years on 50 mm, but am thinking of investing in a smaller size.

There is no industry standard. Generally the comp will tell you what size they are using. It is always a good idea to get practice on different sizes.
as Chem said is good to practice on all different sizes, but I know a lot of comps are using 45mm now and most studios are going to 45 (some even 40 and 38). I have a feeling the 50mms are going to end up like the dinosurs

I think 50mm's are being phased out. I can't see 40's or 38's becoming a standard. Midwest Pole Dancing & North American Championships use 45's. I believe USPDF uses 45's too. Moses Carrol comps use 50's and so does Allison Sipes Florida Pole Dance Championships. Comps will tell you what size, in the first Midwest comp they had a 50 and a 45. I think the industry standard will probably be the 45. I think it's a good idea to get a 45 if you can. I have both sizes and if I were competing on 50's I have it. Also - after spending THAT long on a 50 - you never really lose your ability to perform on a 50. I was on 50's for around 4 years and although I have my 45 up - when I am someplace with just 50's after a few minutes it feels the same again.
I'm just wondering, does starting out on a 50 make smaller sizes easier to work with or do you need to go through a period of adapting and readjusting your moves to accommodate each size?
There are small things to need to adjust in the beginning, like a no handed jade requires me to pull my split a little further to the side to hold it on my 45 vs my 50. I would agree with Charley though, if you can - get the 45mm.

If you're just starting out - I still think the 50 is best especially if you want to perform. At our Festival and showcases we have a 45 and a 50 so I think it's better to start with the 50 because you still run into them a lot. I think it's easier to move down vs moving up. Leg grips are harder the skinnier you go but if you have a good foundation with the leg grip moves and know your body/grip then you can accomodate. Like PFM said split moves do require a bit more pulling and moves that use little grip like a yogini are dodgier on thinner poles but if you know the move well you can adjust to grip more.
Thanks for the feedback and info, everyone! I had def noticed that USPDF was using 45mm poles, so that got me thinking maybe a new industry standard was in the works. Based on everything I've ascertained from this thread, I'm just going to go ahead an invest in a 45 mm! That being said, if you know anyone trying to sell their 45 mm in the NYC area, let me know!
