What size pole do you use? I have a 50mm. Is the 45 better for tricks but not spins or it is just a personal preference?

I have a 50 mm. I've seen people use both, and would love to get a 45 myself one day. I have heard that it is harder to do tricks on the 45 esp if you are use to the 50, just because with say a CKR you have to squeeze tighter because the pole isn't so big, if that makes any sense

I use a 37mm pole and I dont have trouble with those moves 🙂 I guess its just a matter of what you get used to practising on. But you get much better grip with your hands on a slimmer pole and better grip with your legs on a thicker pole. You just have to choose wich one you prefer 🙂
Wow, a 37mm pole? I didn't know they had them smaller than a 45mm! My hands are small so maybe I should try on a smaller pole.

Yes. Its either 37 or 38mm not sure. It was custom made for the studio I go to. I don't think Xpole have smaller then 45mm. If I had to choose between 45mm and 50mm I would go for the 45mm personally. I tried 50mm and didn't like it. And since you have small hands I would reccomend 45mm. And you could always try and see wich one you prefer 🙂 Different people like different poles 😛
I agree it really is a personal preference I have used a 50mm for 8/9 years then one day in sunny Jamaica I used a 38mm from RPole (incidentially Australia always use a 38mm and coll the 50mm a fat pole lol) A bit dubious to begin with but after half an hour and afew hip adjustments for my favourite inverts I was hooked on the 38mm I found I could achieve so much more and was more confident in trying more complicated moves as I had more trust in my hand grip (I have small hands and can not fit my fingers around a 50mm completely) Now I have an RPole which comes in 38mm Love it xx

I had been learning on 50mm but I've had a couple sessions on 45mm poles and they're so much better imo. You need to grip a bit harder with your legs obviously but it's a tiny difference compared to how much better you can grip with your hands on a 45mm. I'd need to wipe the 50mm pretty much after every move but on the 45mm I can go on for like 10 minutes without wiping it. It makes spins a lot easier (especially reverse grab) and hand grip moves like aysha, extended butterfly etc. The 45mm is also a lot easier on your arm joints. Mine are pretty sensitive and I'd had tendonitis for months and some moves hurt my wrist and shoulders on the 50mm. The 45 makes it all painless! Practising the twisted grip handspring on 50mm completely killed my shoulder but I didn't have any pain after I did it on the 45mm (and I made so much more progress as well). Bottom line, 45mm is much more body-friendly and you can progress faster on it imo 🙂

I have incredibly small hands. I never realized that until the owner of the studio I worked at pointed it out to me...Later when Karol, Empy and Nymph came they confirmed I have small hands. I stll use a 50mm and I can do everything on it. It's harder and I do think some things take me longer to learn, I have a 45mm but I barely use it. I really like the 50mm and spend most of my time on it, however having both has been really helpful to me. So what I am saying is to not give up one for another but try to use them both equally if you can because 50 is *still* the norm - for now.
I have a 50mm and I have larger hands... not huge mind you. Works out fine for me. For me my shyness on the pole was more to do with the fact that I needed to practice more and not the fact that the pole was too thick. You know?
What size pole do they use as standard in competitions these days? I'm soo curious to try a smaller pole now that I read it's easier on the joints!

I'm really interested in the statements about the 45mm being easier on the body. I have long fingers, so the small hands thing has never been difficult on me, but my joints do take a beating. I am also considering going to a 45mm... I am concerned about leg holds but...anyone who's experienced greater ease on thier joints, please tell me how you've found the 50mm harder and whether it is a big difference for you! Is there any proof of the joints thing, or is it all experience? HOw many can say they've foundt this? Clearly, I"m interested! Thanks!
