Very NEW to this. Practicing first spin/move and the arm i use to stabilize myself (higher arm holding the pole hurts when i hold on and initiate the spin what am i doing wrong?

Hey there.........Welcome! Spins aren't really a good place to start for most people. Although it looks relatively easy.........it requires a fair amount of strength as well as understanding the biomechanics involved. Where is the pain? In your hand? Wrist? Forearm? Elbow? It could be a number of things and again, if you are really new to pole, having both feet off the floor and expecting your upper body to support your body weight might simply be too much and the pain is your body's way of saying "Listen to me.....or I will get worse" Veena has superb lessons and I highly recommend them. Any of my students who purchase a pole for home---are encouraged to purchase the lesson's here and several of them have. Building strength safely is the most important foundation and can be done in a variety of ways on the pole and off the pole. Most average women can not lift their own body weight..........so as I say to my new students---Would you expect yourself to be able to walk up and do a pull up if you have never developed any upper body strength? Once I phrase it that way, the light bulb comes on... lol Take the time to develop required strength and build a good solid foundation. The investment now will minimize injury now and in the future. Too often, people rush through having to do every new trick they see---without regard whatsoever for whether they "should" be doing it......and in the long run----pretty much all of them are injured soon there after.... Hang in there(pardon the pun :D) You will get stronger and continue to get stronger....but listen to your body. It will let you know.....loud and clear.............

if you are not talking about pole burn in that area then it is probably pulling on the muscles and tendons. I get sore in this area when I do spins and I figured out that I was over gripping the pole. also my arms are pretty weak and are not used to holding all my body weight. I have to agree with others that spins are really hard on your body when you are first starting out. I know alot of people are completely self taught, but I don't know how. definitely get lessons if you can. either in person or on here with veena. be very strict about following proper body mechanics. it would be really easy to pull your bicep or shoulder when doing a spin
for me, I would do alot of spins and not feel the pain till the next day before I realized how much damage I had done. really take it slow and gradually build up.

Hi Loveleahannah. As Reenie mentioned spins are not the best thing for new polers to start with. You'll want to do pole work and conditioning work that strengthen the muscles, before working on spins. If you have a home pole you may want to check out the lessons here.
