Has anyone seen some kind of non-heels/boots footwear that would be great for pole, particularly protecting the top of the foot while climbing? I've seen footundeez, which seem great for pirouettes etc, but they don't cover the part of your foot you use to climb. i'm considering just getting a piece of plastic and wrapping it around my feet.

Are you wanting something because your foot hurts and your always bruising when you climb?
yeah, exactly. i'm also concerned about bone spurs. i will probably get a pair of heels soon, but i prefer dancing barefoot

If your feet are bruising and hurting when climbing you might want to chech your technique. Try making sure your pushing the shin into the pole and pressing the inside of the knee into the pole when climbing. The foot shouldnt be taking on all of the pressure. This is very common for new polers to rely on the foot to hold them. Using the upper body ( back and biceps ) is also important for all climbs. So in short the foot can wrap around the pole but it shouldn't be taking on much of the pressure. Give that a try. Boots and shoes can be a great tool for performing so you can climb easier with less effort! ;)

I think Veena has the right idea about making sure everything's OK with your climbing technique, but if you're still interested in shoes, here are some additional suggestions: 1) Mighty grip makes ankle/foot protectors with grippy fabric, although I can't personally attest to how well they work. http://mightygrip.info/bmighty-grip-pole-fitnessb-foot-knee-ankle-protectors-ankle-protectors-with-tack-strips-p-507.html 2) Chinese pole performers wear martial arts shoes, such as Feiyue brand. They will protect your feet, but may well be hard to use on a dance pole, since it's not rubber-coated. I have a pair, but haven't used them much, except to protect my feet for tricks like starfish, etc. http://www.feiyue-shoes.com/pages_en/ ; 3) Your feet will stop bruising from climbing eventually, so you might want to just hang in there until they toughen up. (I know it sucks!) As for bone spurs, I don't have any medical information either way, but I've never heard of anyone getting one from the pole.

thanks everyone! bondage tape looks like a great option :) and veena thanks for the climbing tips. i took almost a year off from pole before recently returning, and i think that i forgot my technique a bit.
I used to get quite bad bruises on the tops of my feet when climbing. I asked my teacher about it, and she said it was because I was using wrong technique. Basically, what Veena said. We don't use shoes at the studio I go to, but she suggested I bring socks to class. That way, you're forced to use the grip between your ankles, and your muscles in your upper body to climb, rather than using the top of your foot. Because if you try to climb using your feet you'll just slip! Hope that helps!
with the bondage tape...how does this stop the bruising? Buying some anyway cos I quite like the idea, lol!! I also get bruising on the top of my feet, I am going to take your tip and wear socks when climbing from now on. I dont know what I would do without this website for tips like this... I just assumed the bruises are normal cos I get bruises EVERYWHERE from poling and generally bruise pretty easily. But maybe it is my technique...Thanks!!

I am going to check my technique too as I am not a 'bruiser' except when I climb and after 2.5 years I still can't point my back foot when I climb...time to get back to basics for me I think!!

@ shona it wont stop all bruising, but because is sticks to the pole you'll be able to climb with less stress on the foot. Willio, Cliimbing with both feet pointed will improve your strength for sure!!
I would definitely give socks a go. I have had bad climbing technique for like 6 months, but after only 3 weeks of wearing socks my technique is now perfect! 🥂 I'm going to try climbing with both pointed feet now too!
If bondage tape is tough to find, I would recommend self-adhesive bandage tape. It looks like an ace bandage roll, only it's self adhesive and you just trim a section to stick it to your foot! It's in the bandage area in Shoppers Drugmarts or Pharmaprixs Because it's self-adhesive, it helps you climb while preventing some of the bruising.

Thanks for the mention. I designed Trixie Toes so we can have protection on the bottom of our feet yet grip where we needit to climb. Mighty Grip was VERY patient with me when going thru the design and prototype phase. I truly hope you find they are useful.
I also use just plain old black electrical tape- protects and comes off w no pulling of the skin. One of my fav products- always have it w me, use it for my horse, pole and everything else!. Cheap , convenient and - it works!
Be careful putting any adhesives on your skin which aren't meant for skin. Some people can have very severe allergic reactions. And because the product isn't rated for human application, the components they use to make the tape and the adhesive could have impurities which could potentially be harmful. Bondage tape is very similar to electrical tape and is also very cheap, but is meant to be applied to skin. Might be worth a try since you know the electrical tape works for you!
