Hi 🙂 I didn't know were to put this so i put it in here as it has something to do with moving on the pole. lol. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can gain momentum? My spins don't seem to last long and i can't do combo's that well because when i go to get into the next move im on the floor 😕 I don't know if i am doing something wrong or not but if anyone can help then THANK YOU! 🙂 x

Hi I dont know if this will help or not...but I have found that as a beginner, my spins started to last longer with more skin contact with the pole, and my first spins I was just grabbing with my palm, but now as I spin my forearm/wrist makes contact, slows me down to lengthen the spin. I find myself being able to hold myself up longer the more I practice and gain strength in the muscles that are used during each move. Hope that helps! Happy poling! Dani

Are you walking around the pole to gain speed and reaching out wide with your outside leg? I notice that beginners tend to fear reaching out far when going into spins. They tend to hug the pole too quickly, cutting off any momentum. When I do my spins, I really speed up and get out as far as I can and that gets it going. As you gain strength in your grip you will be better able to control your spins by loosening/tightening your grip on the pole. Don't worry, just keep practicing, you will get there in no time!
hi thanks for the comments 🙂 I have been poling for a month and yes i do get away from the pole instead of close etc 🙂 ill try it tho i think its to do with kicking off with my foot/leg? i did some spins earlier after i posted this and my spins seemed to last longer - lol, asif they were being stubborn! 🙂 ill try what you have suggested both of you 🙂 Thanks x
you also might want to try putting your thumb on the same side of your fingers instead of grip the pole with the thumb and fingers (baseball grip). it'll loosen the grip slightly so you wont stop your momentum with your hands.
I actually do the opposite of Dani, less skin longer I go. Could be cause I get mad pole burn since I seem to have grippy skin in many places. What I find helps is really throwing yourself into it. Ok, that is a bad mental image but basically if your leg is swinging to give you momentum then swing it with power like your gonna kick a hole through your wall...but don't actually kick a hole in it. 🙂 . Some spins also need chest/torso to lead/get the momentum going, so almost lean into it. I'm not super great with explaining but for me giving more power and just really going for it helped exponentially. Also make sure that your pushing perpendicular to the pole (which often feels like away) and not in or around the pole. Kinda like a tetherball (you being the ball and the rope being your arms/legs).
We have been doing a lot of focus on gaining momentum in our classes just recently and it is hard isn't it! I long for a good take off and to get round the pole more than once! Lol. Our instructor teaches us to step away from the pole as we go in to a spin, she says the more distance away from the pole you have the more momentum it creates - it certainly does for her!! I guess that all we can do is practise and follow the tips given above! Maybe the more confidence we get on the pole the easier it will be to create the momentum? I also learned to swing the outside leg out and away from the pole rather than all the way around, and to lead with the chest, aka boobs out. Kinda fall into it, and not take the inside foot off the ground till it absolutely can't stay any longer without falling on your face... For the grip, we learned thumbs up to not torque/pull the forearm, so most of my grip comes from the middle and ring finger. I like wrist bands, especially for carousel & Co. because I get pole burn otherwise. It took me to the end of week 7 though that I felt like I was actually spinning around the pole and didn't feel like a sack of potatoes crashing down right away anymore... For spin combos, it took another few weeks. Keep at it, your muscles will soon be strong enough to hold you up longer 👍
I think it has a lot ot do with strength as well. Once you build up the upper body strength to old you up longer, your added momentum (from the tips above) will combine with that for awesome spins. When I first started my spins lasted 1.5 go rounds because I couldn't hold myself up long enough to go around several times properly. Once I got stronger (and more comfortable) I was able to throw myself into my spins confidently and got a better result. Don't let those darn pros fool you! It's not as easy as they make it look! It took me a good minute to get good strong and spinny spins. Pole ups. Push ups. Pull ups. They help! 😀
I just started 2 weeks ago, and it's been hard. I didn't even trust the pole at first. and now I am a little bit. but not much. when I do the martini spin and the chair spin I keep trying to push myself away, the more I go at it, the more I blare my music and get into it, the better it works. but once i stop my hands hurt so bad. it takes time i think. so patience i am learning is the key, oh and it comes with tons of bruises!. 🙂
Hey ladies, I was curious...I can generally get enough momentum in my spins, but I can't seem to get enough...well, spin! By the time I make two rotations, I'm on the floor, for pretty much every spin I do. Any ideas?
depends really, people say it seems like i spin forever because I have long legs.. but usually i let my grip control how fast i go down the pole. I get my momentumn like posted up top.. by swinging my leg out n around, but also piviting on my inside foot kinda like im gliding really =) a nice flow ^^ once you have the str and the comfort level with yourself and the pole you'll get it in no time ^^ sometimes too ur just really slick and just slide the rest of the way down n e ways lol
