so since we are being very open with this discussion...I got a coupld of questions... 1. does it fit in somewhat like a diaphragm?? (Couldn't be fitted for one..see below hehe) 2. how do you know if it's in right? 3. What if you have a tilted uterus? which causes the vajajy to be extra long? 😳 lol as in...even if you wanted you couldn't find or reach your cervix??? I find these interesting and would be willing to give it a shot...but don't know if it would work out... btw..i ran by walmart at lunch time and they have the Instead softcup brand...I opened a box (dont' worry they were individually wrapped and sealed) and yikes!! those have like a 2.5" diameter...and they aren't very flexy...that kinda scared me! lol 😜

The DivaCup is different than a diaphragm, so I bet you wouldn't have any problems. I'm including a pic of it at the bottom. The first two boxes of the picture are different ways to fold it based on whichever is more comfortable (it comes unfolded when inserted) and the third picture is the one I want you to see; that's where it should sit inside you. My understanding is that the Instead Softcups are much more like a diaphragm, except that they have room to hold liquid. I haven't used one, so I can't say one way or another if it might be a good option for you. 2. You can tell the diva cup is in correctly if when you grip it with your thumb and index finger at the base and try to spin it. If it spins easily it is in right. Make sure you insert it so it is pointed towards your back/behind, rather than pointed sort of upward towards your insides. 3. According to the DivaCup Web site, "Yes, The DivaCup can be worn for women with a tipped or tilted uterus. Since it is worn lower in the vaginal canal it does not interfere with the position of the uterus." Yay! I went to SoftCups' Web site and unfortunately they do not mention whether or not we tilted ladies can use it. 🙁

That's no fun; I've never heard of anyone having that much trouble keeping it in. I guess it isn't for everyone. I'm glad you posted though; this thread was getting one-sided; it's good for more, differing opinions to weigh in. With that said, I would argue that spending that $25-35 to find out whether or not it will work is a worthwhile gamble. The average woman spends 150-200 dollars (US) annually on tampons and/or pads, which is a far greater expense. The economic climate is kind of tough right now, so anything that can save $100+ every year is a big help. That got a little convoluted so bottomline of what I was trying to say: It's probably not for everyone. There are plenty of reasons you may not want to try it, but expense shouldn't be one of them. 👍 I would definitely agree that it's worth trying out if you have the money for it! If it works for your body than the savings are HUGE!!! That's one of the main reasons I really wanted it to work for me, along with it being non toxic, and earth friendly. 😀 All this talk about it has made me want to wipe the dust off of my box and give it another try. Wishful thinking, maybe, but It sure would be nice if I could get it to work for me. Too bad it's not one of those things you can get a friend to help you out with in person! "Hey, am I putting this in right??? 😮 😳 lol!
Rubi ·
LOL Spinny. That would be hilarious. I can just imagine how my friends would DIE if I asked them for help with that. 😂 You might as well give it another whirl if you still have your cup. Considering how much you wanted the cup to work for you, you probably indeed followed the directions perfectly, but here's some pointers just in case: Make sure you point the top/rim/opening of the cup towards your backside and also make sure that the cup will spin easily after it is in its final position. If it doesn't spin as well it probably hasn't fully opened (or the direction of insertion is a little off) so you can use a finger to encourage some airflow and the cup will usually pop open. If it isn't opened up properly it can and will leak, the severity of which depending on how deflated it is. If you do all that and the cup still gives you issues I guess it just isn't meant to be.
wow such an informative thread! i may try these as well.. i too am not really a tampon person unless im going somewhere and i KNOW ill be there for a while and what im doing.. other than that i wear pads and i have a heavy flow.. so by the time im done.. the pads have like rubbed on me so much that it hurts kinda like a diaper rash LOL sounds very interesting

If it works well for you, you'll never go back to getting rubbed to death every month. 🥂
Rubi, Yeah, when I insert it it's all the way in, pointed towards the tail bone, and spins with ease. I DID just do some online searches, and I found a forum about menstrual cups. I found a thread where a girl was having the same problems as I did, and she tried inserting it with a different fold than the usual "C" fold. She said it started working much better for her. So...I'll have to give that a try when my cycle comes back around (in a week or so). I'll let you all know if it works for me (since I'm sure you're just DYING to know 😂 ). Here's the link to that forum in case any of you are interested in some more detailed reading on the topic. 🤓 http://menstrualcups.org/

I really would be curious to hear whether or not this works out for you. 😳 I had never thought of trying different folds.

Out researching a completely different topic on the net tonight, I ran across a post from someone saying that their DivaCup had pulled out their IUD. 😲 I have no clue the validity of this statement, but if you have an IUD, you might want to ask your Dr. about the DivaCup. Mindy Both the Diva Cup and Instead Softcups recommend that ladies using IUDs not use their products. I hadn't thought that IUDs and cups would be too much of a problem, but apparently it's true. From the DivaCup Web site: "The DivaCup is not suggested for use with an Intrauterine Device (IUD). It is possible for the IUD to become dislodged, displaced or removed when the menstrual cup is removed by inadvertently pulling on the IUD string. As with all gynecological concerns, please consult with your physician." 😮
OMG!!!! 🥂 🥂 🥂 🥂 🥂 When I left to go back to school, there was 1 reply to my post. I get back, and everyone is curious!!! I'm so glad I was able to open this topic up for conversation! Now that I see this much interest, I'll give my backstory. I've never had a consistent period ever. For the first 2 years after I started at 13, I only got my period every 6 months. Then for the next few years, it fluctuated every cycle. Sometimes it was 6 months, sometimes it was "normal," then once I got my period twice in 2 weeks. That led to on-again off-again with birth control. Haven't been on it in a year. But, I've always had a lot of frustration associated with my period, which sucks because it should be celebrated imo. I'm on a general mission to make the week a more harmonious time for me as a person, and for my body as a whole, and for just my ladyparts too! I found the divacup for $20 on amazon, I think I'm going to go ahead and order it today. It probably won't make it here in time for me to use it, but if the one day shipping isn't outrageously expensive, I'll go ahead and try. I'm just worried it will be too long 😕 But from my (hilarious 😂 ) attempts at measurement, I don't think I have a particularly short canal or anything. Hmmm.

Since it is worn lower in the vaginal canal it does not interfere with the position of the uterus." Yay! I went to SoftCups' Web site and unfortunately they do not mention whether or not we tilted ladies can use it. 🙁 The softcups have to be hooked over the end of your cervix to work, so I'm betting no 🙁 I tried instead softcups....they've never worked for me. Luckily, silicone cups fit differently. But every time I've tried instead, I've had leaks. And I know with total certainty I had it placed right. 🤔
PDR, you sound like me. I started menstruating kinda late in life (16 or so) and it's been very random. The one time I waited for 6 months for it, I had the worst cramps EVER. I literally writhed in bed for about two hours, unable to do anything, including stand up! It really sucked. I've also stopped taking the pill (though we aren't looking to have babies for another 5 or so years), and it's actually been nicer. I've had less depression since I stopped taking it, as well as seeming healthier. 🥂 Jury's still out on the Divacup, actually. 🙄

Rubi thank you so much for all your help!!! I think I'll give it a try....I'll have to wait a hold month now though. 😂
Rubi ·
No probs, Veena. It's been fun to help. Good luck next month! 😀
Hey Ladies! Since this board is already here, and we've established there are no guys, I have another question on the topic of ones' monthlies. I've heard many times before that one should NEVER go upside down while on the rag. Never, ever. It causes problems, apparently. I heard this reading Yoga books, and yet I never heard it in Yoga class. I've heard it, also, talking about inversions on the pole, and yet I've never heard any instructors mention it! 🤔 So, is this correct? Should we females be forgetting the inversions while menstruating? What happens if one has a competition? Or in my case, really really really wants to work on the CKR, but just got her girly-thing? 🤸
Veena ·
I cannot think of any medical reason why...(I'm not a dr duh) but when I spoke with my dr about inverting while pregnant he said there was no danger in it....still I stopped inverting by the 2nd trimester, which would be a good rule to follow for the advance dancer who becomes pregnant, and, beginners shouldn't be inverting anyway. 🤓 I'm guessing the no inverting "rule" given by yoga instructors is more like the wives tale telling you not to swim after eating. Your body is working harder when your menstruating (just like after you've eaten) so you need to listen and pay attention to YOUR body and if something is too tiring or doesn't feel right then stop. If we really listen our bodies will let us in a some amazing secrets. 😉
I've heard many times before that one should NEVER go upside down while on the rag. Never, ever. It causes problems, apparently. I heard this reading Yoga books, and yet I never heard it in Yoga class. According to Yoga philosophy, the natural downward force in one's body is called apana. Apana aids in digestion, elimination, and childbirth (which is why having women labor and deliver laying on their backs is so un-helpful). Yoga instructors traditionally ask the class if there are any women "on her moon" before inversions and usually give the student(s) the option to refrain from going upside down. If the student is a basic beginner, it's often a good idea for her to skip inversions at this time because there might be light-headedness or nausea that's related to one's period. Going upside down might result in a preventable injury. If a student is more experienced, this usually isn't an issue. If you are past the first few days of your period, most Yoga teachers will tell you it's fine for you to invert. There are some instructors who believe that the "toxins" that are naturally eliminated from the uterus during menstruation should not be allowed to return to, or pool in, the uterus. So some teachers will warn you not in invert due to safety and liability reasons, and others due to subtle energy reasons. And some won't even mention it in class due to either her own embarrassment or her not wanting to embarrass the student. In my opinion, it's really up to the individual. Listen to your body whether in Yoga or poling.

Ahh yes thank you Yoga! I have heard that before, I also have read that in India most women don't practice yoga at all while they are on their "holiday" 🌸
Thank you, ladies! I can totally agree with the whole idea of ones' body working harder when one is menstruating, because I know I feel like crap the first couple of days...I'm always tired, hurting, and quite unwilling (usually) to do anything other than sit. I suppose that means school is right up my alley! 🙄 I'm pretty sure I've done some "beginner" inversions in yoga, but I never got really good at it...I don't do the classes anymore, they're rather expensive! But, it's good to know about, right? I do some yoga for stretching after I dance, I suppose, but it's not quite the same. Perhaps I'll give my CKR a couple of days before I try again. 🥂 🐱
Veena ·
Thank you, ladies! Perhaps I'll give my CKR a couple of days before I try again. 🥂 🐱 One other thing while were at it....your pain tolerance can be at its lowest when your menstruating so some moves may feel more painful on your skin!
amcut ·
I know that I can't do some positions while I'm on a heavy day- in yoga, I mean. They're usually back bending positions, strangely enough, but if I stay in the position too long the cramps when I flow out of the position are unbeaaaarable. But I also get into positions (mainly front bending positions) when my cramps are being unbearable to relive pain- so I just may have a weird uterus.
Haha, Amcut, I'm pretty much the opposite! I always try to stretch out by bending backward when I have bad cramps, and generally find if I sit for too long, or if I'm bending forward, it tends to get worse! Maybe we both have weird uteruses! 😕 Veena, I think I knew something about the pain tolerance thing...it just slipped my mind, apparently! 🙄 But I appreciate the reminder! 🤓
