well, soo happy that av just saved myself some money after downloasdin the art of pole dvds for free!! gan watch them 2nyt and then start doin whats on them 2moz or wednesday. xxx

When you think about whether or not torrenting is stealing, you should think about it this way: The internet, in a way, is like a museum. For all intents and purposes, you walk in, browse around. When you like a picture you see, you right click and save the file. You aren't physically taking the file off of the page. You aren't destroying the poster's reputation by saving it. And you aren't paying for it. If they aren't asking money for it, no harm no foul. When you torrent, it's a lot different. Torrenting would be like your friend walking into an ACTUAL museum, buying a Da Vinci painting, and putting it up in his home. This would cost him quite a bit of money. But because he's a nice guy, he puts the one of a kind painting in his super amazing "reproducer machine" and gives you a copy of it. So not only is the museum not making money off of that copy, but the artist did not create it officially and did not give the rights for someone else to make a copy. It would be like if someone cloned your daughter and started walking around and using her for their own purposes. You went through all of the trouble of raising her, why should someone who didn't pay for her (financially throwing supporting growth, or psychologically) get to adopt your child? But it's not adopting since you would still have your kid. There's just a copy of her running around doing God knows what being used for whatever purpose you could think of. And that's why there's such a big issue on torrenting. So when you torrent Jamilla's, or Felix, or Alethea's dvds, you are stealing money from them. You might not be stealing the product, but you are stealing the money that would be going into their pockets as you are not paying for it. Not only is this rude to a fellow dancer, but it also encourages them to STOP making DVD's since they aren't turning a prophet. Pole isn't that huge of a sport in comparison to gymnastics, football, soccer, tennis, etc. We all come from various corners of the world, and I'm sure you know many dancer's here who don't have a studio within an hour's distance of them, maybe some as far as two. Some of us will never meet a pole artist due to the fact that there ARE no pole studios near by, or we don't make enough money to go to conventions and meet them. Those DVD's are there to help us. And also to help the instructors, who may have given up their real jobs just to teach people like you and me. I'm sure that when you charge $150 for a private, you're thinking that they might make bank. But think of how small of a pond they're swimming in. In a way it's like exotic dance. Just because I work at Christie's and our only VIP option is $100 for three dances does not garentee that I will be making $100 or more that day. It's an OPTION, and us, or any other performer, athlete, human being, interacting with us is just as much their right and privledge.
Ok, lets not get into semantics, its technically copyright violation and it's illegal and I won't have it discussed on this site. The pole industry is small and most content is funded and coordinated by the artist and sales are relatively small volumes and therefore small profits to bring you the information and products you enjoy. When you encourage others to download videos illegally you are depriving the dancers of potential profits that are already small.

Have to agree with the webmaster here, if the site is considered a "publisher" of content, then allowing discussion of stuff like this can get it into trouble legally. It's also bad community practise if jamelia is a member. They gotta do what they gotta do. Now, I hate DRM, I hate the film, music and even publishing industry for enforcing many arbitry legalities of what medium is aviable to which countries and at what times (why god, WHY must i wait 3 months after the film airs in the US?), and I would be lying if i said that i didn't learn my craft with software that ....."appeared" magically. I'm not telling anyone how to live in any way...just saying I can see why talking about this stuff on this site isn't reasonable. xxx

My 2 cents. As someone who makes a living teaching (we rarely get PAID performing gigs) I could not imagine taking someone's content and learning from it for free. In order for artists, teachers and the industry to grow we need to financially support pole studios, pole teachers, pole sites, pole dvds, pole events or we will not be able to sustain. I'm not in any way money hungry and believe there is so much great content out there from diverse teachers and dancers (everyone does things differently) that without supporting the industry we will never get to see those things, learn those things and experience those things. Over the years I have tens of thousands of dollars into my pole education from certifications, privates, workshops, memberships, dvd's, etc and it's the best money I've ever spent.
To be blunt: you knew it was wrong when you did it. Call it "sharing" or whatever you want but there is no "get it free" button on Althea's (or any other) site. We need to support, not undermine each other in this community.

Pole Gal, the copies are also illegal. Generally the only reason someone doesn't "complain" is that they don't know about it existing. We consider file sharing to be "wrong" or "illegal" because you are copying a piece of property, in this case a DVD, and sharing it with others without the concent of the person who created it. If, for example, I was to write a book, and then someone copied that book on a photocopier to give to their friends, I would be quite upset. My books are intended to be my livelihood, and without being able to sell them to new readers (because those new readers could get it for free from their friends), I would be living in a box under a bridge. To share files of things is still sharing the actual content contained on a DVD or CD. We can purchase files of music on iTunes, and then there is no physical thing containing the content, other than your hard drive. If you share the content, the physical thing becomes unnecessary, and thus the artist cannot make any kind of money, including what they need for rent. I am all for freedom of information, music, art, everything. If I could live and have all of my needs met without having to work, I would write all my books and give them away, and I wouldn't care about whether they got copied or not. I think many people feel this way. However, since we live in capitalism, it's not possible, so we have to fight to keep what we've created under control, so we can live and create more in the future.
Honestly that Ebay listing should be reported if they are copies of Jamilla's work.
@Pole Gal - I know the concepts of Intellectual Property can be confusing especially with all the hubub in the media about it. There are a couple rules that make it very easy to understand. If you do not have an original, authorized disk or if you did not pay for content from an authorized seller of that content, you are not granted a legal license to use that intellectual property. In the case of the DVDs you ordered from eBay, they are not original and therefore are in violation of copyright law. You are required by law to report the offender to the appropriate authority or you could be considered an accessory to mail fraud. Remember just because we have the ability to replicate something doesn't mean that replication is legal. A civilized society requires legal mechanisms to protect Intellectual Property in order that the creators can gain income that can allow them to continue to grow and benefit society. For example, StudioVeena.Com requires roughly ten servers to operate, the cost of this operation is not inconsequential. Were people to simply steal our videos and distribute them free of charge we woud no longer be able to operate and this forum would no longer exist. I hope that helps to clear it up.
Pole gal - this is how "sharing" is wrong. Lets say you and four of your friends want to learn to pole dance. Instead of everyone paying you decide to "share" the lessons. You sign up and go to class each week, then run home and share what you have learned with your friends. Everyone is happy cheating the system and getting things for free. HOWEVER- the instructor and or pole school can not survive on ONE student. She eventually has to close the studio and now you have .....?? OR - the instructor- who has spends time and money learning skills, how to spot and keep students safe, creates choreography to teach you, etc. finds out that you are smiling to her face in class then running aound behind her back teaching others what she has provided for YOU. (and taking food off her table in the process.) Wow! what a slap in the face. How would you feel in her shoes? Dvds or personal lessons - it's the same thing. Let's not risk people like Jamilla , Felix or any other up and coming pole artist decide quit SHARING their skills with us.

my old pole teacher didnt mind if i showed friends what i learned at class and showed them how 2 do it, but i do understand what u mean tho!!! but am not 1 only person 2 download something from a file-sharing site and i defo wont b the last person 2 do it, i obviously wasnt the 1st person 2 come across pole dvds etc on a file-sharin site and i wnt be the last 2 do that either!!
@Pole Gal - Teaching something that you have learned is not illegal, however I would suspect that if you wore a camera in class so your friend could watch the teach without paying she would have a distinctly different opinion. You are correct however in your statement that you aren't the first nor are you the last to fileshare. That statement can be made of many things, if I were to kill someone tomorrow I would not be the first murderer in history nor would I be the last and neither part of that statement makes murder legal or morally acceptable.

It's not about the existance of "free" resources to gather and keep information it's about the choice to do so. I have loaned out DVD's before if I wasn't using them, I have in some cases given them away, sold them or traded them but that's because I had no need for them. I paid full price for them from the artist. Even that seems a little wrong now, lol! As an instructor nothing make me more angry than teaching a great class or sequence and having students go home immediatly and just teach it to others. Why would you pay for class then allow someone else to gain free access to current new information? Shouldn't they atleast help you pay for the class if they are immediatly and directly benefitting? That's not fair to you or your instructor. I'm not saying don't share, I guess I am saying think about what you're doing. I paid $150 to learn to the fonjji. Why? Because that's a fair price for a private - I ans an instructor am directly benifitting and will teach it how many more times? The difference is - I paid to learn it correctly, safely and how to teach it - so in the end $150 isn't that much.
