Hi my name is shona and I was just wondering how long did you have to weight train before you could really do some of the great tricks and also how long b4 your body gets use to the pole

It kind of depends on your starting point. I no longer bruise the insides of my thighs for the most part nor my arms unless I am learning something totally new or working on a pole that is a different diameter. Took me a good 6 months to be able to caterpillar climb more than 1 scootch, then after falling out of it, took me about another 6-8 months before I would even do it again. Shoulder mount took a lot of reverse incline crunches before I could get it routinely, but it still hurt. A year later and I can do it without thinking. Knee hold took what seems forever to get and that was mainly from the pain, a good 6-8 months after before I was able to nail it each and every time. Now I also do not pole regularly...I have gone 2 months without even touching it. Typically it takes me a few months to "get" the move and another 6-8 months to perfect it.
wow I only ask because the im trying to do the pole sit and I cant seem to get over how it feels but i guess if i keep at it that will get better thanks for the reply my hopes are still up lol
I don't weight train at all and I never have. And I'm not naturally strong! :) Sometimes it takes some time to figure out the balance of a move. Do you have Veena's lessons? I recommend the pole sit lesson. It was something I figured out long after I did more "advanced" moves and I found her advice helpful! Good luck :)
I know everyone is different; when I started poling, I was very active in a power flex weight training class. It was an excellent class, I was lifting quite a bit for me and great cardio also. During my first pole class I quickly realized none of that mattered!! It was as if I hadn't done any physical activity at all. The process of holding, lifting, spinning my body weight was totally different than lifting free weights or weight bar. Even all the ab work didn't help when doing what I needed to on the pole. Even though I didn't feel like I was accomplishing on the pole, each practice and new thing was developing strength. Some things came easier than others and once I accepted that it prevented me from getting frustrated. I just continued to enjoy the workout I was getting. Enjoy and have fun! :)

I started poling very out of shape (hadn't been to the gym or done any sort of workout for 3 years when I started) and I did not weight train when I started. Just kept poling and fighting for moves and eventually the strength came by poling. I still don't weight train but am starting to get the desire to.
yes I have the lessons and thanks hookedonpole you are right I need to just chill out about it and it will come maybe I'll sign up for a class of two for motivation thanks every1 ps I started off with no arm power or abs at all
On the pole sit, I have always done it from a climb and kept my climbing foot behind the pole. It was not until I had that comfortable that I took my legs off the pole. That added grip from the leg behind the pole really helped me. All you can really do is stick with it and be patient. Rest when you need to. And try as hard as you can not to compare to others' progress! For the pole sit, it took me two-three weeks for the high pain and bruising to go away, and probably about a month to feel totally comfortable. However, there are days where it's still painful - there's always so many factors involved! Like Chem said, bruises will still come when learning new moves. I also started off out-of-shape and weak. But there are women on here who started out in fantastic shape, and they still couldn't do any moves at first! That's why pole is so awesome. The good thing about strength training beforehand is that you will balance both sides of your body. I regret not strengthtraining beforehand, and I was left with an awkward, weak left side. It's about four months in and things are finally starting to even out. Chin ups and pull ups really help for poling (though they probably won't help for pole sits!) Keep at it Shonaj!
