I've had my brass pole for a few months now, and I clean it with a mixture of alcohol and water. Lately I notice that it seems to be starting to tarnish in a few places. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the tarnish and how to clean it to keep it from tarnishing? Thanks so much!

my studio has brass -- we use regular old brass polish (forget brand, but found it in home depot). it works well cleaning and shining, and does not leave the poles slick be prepared for a whole lot of black stuff to come off as you wipe off the polish - it is messy. i actually wear rubber gloves when we polish :-)

You have to use brass cleaner. We use Brass-O at our studio. Unfortunately, brass cleaner makes the pole really slick but it get rids of the tarnish. After cleaning with brass-o, wipe down the pole with mass amounts of alcohol. It will take off any extra residue and it helps with the slickness. Good luck :)
While Brass-o is best, it stinks like heck so in a pinch I use soft scrub on the poles in my studio.

I've only used glass cleaner on my brass so far (its a 2 week old brass xpole) but to be honest it doesn't really need a wipe down cos its so grippy! After I use Brasso on it, does anyone know if glass cleaner will cut through the residue that Brasso might leave on? Or do I need rubbing alcohol?
How often are you supposed to use brass cleaner, rather than just wiping it down like you would for another type of pole?
I'm thinking maybe when it tarnishes? I have some on the top of my pole, a little area of blackening, but otherwise it looks really clean so I haven't used brasso on it yet
Just wondering if anyone has tried using the Mr Clean Magic Erasers on their brass poles? Can't see it being any more abrasive than brasso. Hmmmm...just found out that the Aussie version and the US version of Brasso are significantly different! The label of Australian Brasso lists "Liquid Hydrocarbons 630g/L; Ammonia 5g/L", whereas the Material Safety Data Sheet for Brasso in North America lists: isopropyl alcohol 3-5%, ammonia 5-10%, silica powder 15-20% and oxalic acid 0-3% as the ingredients.

http://www.autogeek.net/motmagalpol.html I got my brass pole in November of '07. Had it outside until July of last year and used this to clean it. (manufacturer recommended) It never made it slippery...was actually grabbier right after I cleaned it with this =]
ChemGodess -- we use the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on our brass poles often, with no harm.

Wow, sounds like an easy way to clean brass - Magic Erasers! Love those things! And the Mag Polish. Great idea too! @ Chem Goddess - what's the difference between the US and AUS version of Brasso? Sorry, I'm not very good with the periodic table! HAHAHA. 😀

This morning I noticed some spots on my brass pole. Any idea what this is and how to remove it? I've tried veenas way of steaming the pole and also using wet wipes. It's not coming off :( heartache!

If you have tried brasso or other brass polish and it didn't work I would contact who ever the pole was from and ask.
I have those same spots RedAmber :( I'm not sure what they are either, but really hoping it's not rust :( Let us know if you find out! At the studio I go to, and at home we use methylated spirits to clean brass. I loved window cleaner for my chrome pole, but metho is great for brass!
