Lately I have been really using counts of 8 to make my routines. I kinda follow it with the song. One part of the song, a move my just come to my mind that works really well with it. Then I just work around that spin/trick. I also make sure I dont just walk around the pole and I add some flair to it. When I freestyle I have a habit of forgetting what I want to do in it and I end up walking around until I do something.
Minicooper, I do the same thing with the walking! It's getting better, but I still do it sometimes ;) As for what I meant bout counting my spins, well, I never can seem to get spins to integrate with music. I love spins, as they are mostly what I've been doing for a few years. I do really like them, but rarely can I find a place in music where it works. Most choreography I see is aerial stuff, and inverted stuff, so I don't have a lot of example for things like adding spins into a routine and such.
Runemist, do you think it would help if I sent you one of my choreographies? It might be a bit hard to understand, because you might not know what I mean with some of the names (e.g., you don't have a "backbend" here on SV, do you?) - but if you like, just send me your emailaddress and I'll send it to you 😉

@ Yogabeachbabe- Hahahaha! Me too!! I'm soooo badass (in my head). I'm not big on religion, but do believe in the power of intention, an the laws of attraction- So I am sure that I CAN and WILL be as good, in time. I watch people put together routines, and have always wondered about this. I'm guessing that working on small combonations, then combining them would br the best way.

I just choreographed my first routine for a competition... What I did was pick a song that really moved me, and free danced as much as possible with it. Then after getting a feel of how to move to the song, I mapped it out (by measures, that's the marching band geek in me). I also cut my song into several pieces so I could work sections (easier for me when trying to remember moves and for trying to hash out a particular section). I started making a list of moves I love or wanted to use, then slowly started putting them together in combinations and inserting them into my mapped song. So for example I knew there was a hard beat at one part of my song so I put my Chopper there to hit on that beat. From there, as others have said, you kinda gotta figure out what works and what doesn't, and if you have trouble with one part I would probably just take the one move and dance with it freestyle to the song to see what you can come up with to get in and out of it or to transition to. =)
I really love coreography--my best friend and I used to write pseudo-ballet routines to our favorite songs and perfom them for talent shows! As far as pole coreography...I'm working on my first routine (with the hope to get it finished, learn all the moves I want to know for the routine, and then enter a local competittion). I spent the last few weeks doing nothing but working and watching pole dance videos, trying to pick out combinations that I found particularly moving and watching instructional spin videos (watching how they land gives you a really good clue as to what you can have follow the move!) One thing I noticed at a competition I saw over the weekend was that a lot of the girls seemed to be thinking 'okay, walk walk, get ready, we're going to do a spin or a climb!' and would actually pause instead of flowing straight into their next move. Some really beautiful moves, but the choppiness of the routines tended to draw away from the beauty of the moves. So, my big plan is to pratice a bunch and really work on my transitions. It's kind of an aisde, but I also have noticed a lot of poor costume choices. Skirts are way cute when you're spinning around, but I feel like they get significantly less adorable when you're upside down and the skirt is hanging to your shoulders.
I free dance to whichever song i need to choreograph multiple times, and film it....then i watch them and pick out my favorite parts and piece it together like that.
I'm in the progress of doing my first choreography and all these advice are really helpful! I find it a bit difficult to watch routines on say YouTube because they are way more advanced than I am and then I feel discourage because I can't do half the stuff they do. I have a song and have written down a lot of things I want to do, may add and/or subtract a few and also need to work on transitions but I feel it is a good start. I'll let you know how it goes :)
