Help Uploading Vids from Camcorder to Computer!!!!!

Okay....I'm so frustrated right now, I wanna throw my new camcorder out the window!!!! 😠 I like to use Windows Movie Maker to do my editing, but after I transfer the vid from my camcorder to my computer, it is in a MPEG file. I downloaded Prism Video Converter Plus to convert the MPEG to a WMV, but do I have to compress it first???? Not sure how to do that, cause when I work out I record the whole thing, so I end up having about and hour's worth of video and it's saying it is gonna take 1 hour and 46 mins to convert it to the WMV file. Ughh 🙁 This just seems like a lot of extra steps to do to make a stupid 3 minute video....I'm about to give up and just stick with my webcam that I've been using on my labtop, but then if I go anywhere I can't bring my labtop to take video! What am I doing wrong??? I'm gonna go ball up in a conrner and cry now.... 😢
