Hawaii Polers

Hey everyone. I wasn't sure where to post this as I am not a new member so I did not post this under new members. I am looking for polers in Hawaii. I have never been to Hawaii, but I will be moving there this august most likely to the Oahu island. My husband will be attending college there so we will be there for a few years maybe more depending on how things go, how much we like it there, whether he wants to attend med school there or not, how we deal with being away from our family, etc. I have been fascinated with Hawaii since I was little and I am excited to be going and living there, but before anything is even finalized I am already feeling homesick and scared to leave, but won’t stop me from leaving because I’m leaving the midwest!!! It’s not like I love where I am now and my family and I have a strange relationship which is a whole other story to be told some other time. Hi Lady 🙂 I live on Maui, and Empyrean is correct. There are two fit4agoddess studios on Oahu, and a new one just opened on Maui. I work directly with the owner, Ilana, and she is great. I have actually been assisting in her classes. As far as dealing with living on the island, all of my family lives on the East coast (NH and NC) but since we're not super-close it's not a big deal for me. Good luck w your move!!

I moved to Hawaii almost 2 years ago from Portland, OR. It really hasnt been too bad for me as far as being away from family (they are mostly in the Salem, OR area), because I started doing that when I went to college in Indiana, then moved on to Wisconsin, south of Boston, back to Portland, ultimately on to Hawaii. Basically, skyping is awesome! :) I would say that Hawaii is worth it. Sometimes, it really does suck though, when you want to participate in something happening back on the mainland (ie., one of my best friend's Florida wedding). It doesnt make living in Hawaii not worth it, BUT should definitely go into this expecting that. Fit4aGoddess has only two studios on Oahu; in Pearl City (Ewa side/Pearl harbor-ish area) and in Honolulu. I think they used to teach classes in Kailua at the Movement Center, but I do not know if they are still doing that. If you are into other aerial (trapeze/tissu) there are classes for that in Honolulu as well.

yea there is an aerial arts studio in honolulu called samadhi, ive been there only problem is i was spoiled with high ceilings when i started learning and theres are short in compairison

They definitely have short ceilings (~15') there. A couple of the girls that I take classes there with used to rig in the trees at Kapiolani park, which was pretty fun. That was a little bit higher than their studio. If one is just beginning, their studio is fine. Its fine for most things, but not advanced drops. Their focus there really is more aerial dance than strictly acrobatics, which I think is partly due to the space. I wanted to get some tall poles in there, but since they rent/share the space, permanent mounts were not a possibility, and the owner does not have much experience with pole and basically didn't want to jump into that at the moment. 15' is a great height for pole...

Gettiing in late on the conversation,so SORRY! I just relocated from Las Vegas to the Big Island of Hawaii, Hilo side. I was Fawnia's lead instructor back at home, and I've been gimping around on a little 8foot pole here at the new house since Dec. 1st. So I'm ready to take the plunge...I've secured my space, ordered the poles (x-stages, as I would have had to reinforce the ceiling trusses otherwise. $$$ Eek!) and am in the arduous process of getting my LLC dissolved in Nevada and submitted in Hawaii. Insurance is lined up, and starting to spread the word little by little. There aren't any studios on the Big Island right now, but I'm in the midst of training a gal who owns a Pilates studio on the west side of the island, so we will have options available for most who are interested. By spring time we will have legit pole classes here. YIPPEE!!

omg i want to move to the big island!! not going to be able to talk my husband into that one though - he likes it here. surprised you are getting x stages!! expensive!! how tall will they be? i will def. come over at some point to see your studio 🌸

Kimara at X-Stage gave me a SMOKIN' deal. Dependable Hawaiian Express is shipping them over for about 1/2 the price as other shippers. I will refer to DHX for ANYTHING else I need shipped here. The poles/stages will be 10 feet. Good enough! I'll keep you in the loop about Pole Jams we will have. Watch Go! for good kama'aina rates and maybe we can plan some pole play around a cheap flight. Whee!!

10 feet is pretty good! (that's what i have at home) i would like to try an xstage. are you getting stainless steel? btw, i hate Go! airlines. they are the worst!! i always fly hawaiian air, even if it's a little more $.

They will be stainless 50mm. I've used the regular x-stages before, but I ordered the x-stage lites for the studio. Since I'm coming into a yoga studio I need them portable & the lites are going to be much easier to move. I'll let you know when they get in! I've never flown Go! before. I've not had the need to island hop yet. Good to know its worth the extra $$ to fly Hawaiian. ;)

I moved to Hawaii from Chicago in '07 I think it was... Didn't have any friends, joined Fit for a Goddess, made a lot of friends there who I love dearly and hang out with at almost a daily basis. As much as I like the studio and all my friends who I've met through there, I have to say that as a business, it's declined through the years. They used to have a handful of studios peppered around the island and it's now dwindled to just one, in Honolulu. The Pearl City and Kailua one closed down, so if you don't live in town, it'll be a drive. My experience there is/was very teacher dependent. Some teachers are excellent and more than stellar, and some are uh... not so much :P Well, I guess it depends on your personality and whose style you mesh with. I'm not sure what level you are, but after you reach a certain intermediate level, the classes start changing dates and times depending on teacher availability. For someone who needs a consistent schedule, this is not ideal. But if you're a beginner, or early intermediate, it would work well for you as their schedules are kind of set. Nowadays, because of the everchanging schedule issue, I find myself at Samadhi more (hi Corby!). Check it out: http://www.samadhihawaii.com . I love it!!! If you're looking to make solid friends and have fun working out, this is a great place. Everyone is cool. :) Oh and I used to teach intermittently at the med school. Whenever I'd come to do a lecture, I'd wonder how they could study, the JABSOM campus is right by the beach! If I'd gone to med school there, I would have been cutting class all the time! I used to stare out the windows before my lecture and watch the hot surfers, and I'd be like oh sh!t wait, I have students to teach haha!!! And don't worry about missing your friends in the Mainland... they'll come to visit you! I swear I get so broke sometimes when people visit in droves coz I have to take them out to dinner. Skype is great, Facebook is great, but most of the time you won't be sorry you live in paradise ;P

nice! i have 50mm stainless as well. which yoga studio will you be in? i remember there were a couple of yoga places offering pole on the big island, but then they stopped. i usually get over to the big island once a year - usually in the summer/fall. hawaiian air is very reliable, you don't have to worry about being stuck for hours because of delays - they are always right on time. they have flights like every hour, and there are always some cheap ones to choose from on the website. good luck getting your poles and getting all set up!! :)

wow, gummypia, the samadhi studio looks awesome!! i wish someone would start something like that here, together with pole!! i am really missing the ffg classes, it's been a couple of months and no word of anything more to come..

Gummypia- if living in Las Vegas teaches you anything it's how to entertain guests and stay within a budget! It's so cheap to fly to Vegas from just about anywhere that the guest room rarely empty! I'm looking forward to a quieter island lifestyle! Whew! And Hilo is WAAAY slow!! ;) can't wait to meet you! Yippee!!

i love hilo, and the whole puna area. the black sand beach, the red road, the natural steam vents - and the slow pace. i feel so peaceful there. :)

Tarah - Yes, it's sad what's happening to FFG, it's still somehow surviving here in HNL. How's it going in Maui? Found a new spot to teach yet? Well, if you ever visit Honolulu, you should try a class at Samadhi! Not too sure about aerials in Maui, tried googling it and found this: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Esti-Aerial-Art/132070556808090 Looks like thestudiomaui.com has aerial yoga but I don't see the beginner's aerial dance like it advertised in the FB page... maybe you can contact the teacher and ask. I forget where you live, but looks like this is in Haiku. And there are workshops on the Big Island in April and July at Kalani Retreats with Wailana and Andrea (our teacher... she's amazing, you'll love her. There's just so much to explore over there! Hilo side, Kona side, the volcanoes, the mountains... you name it! Entertaining in Honolulu just really breaks the wallet. People who visit me always want to go party in Waikiki and I hate hate HATE going down there! It's so congested and all the prices are soooooo jacked up! Like you, I enjoy the slower, more laid back sort of lifestyle :)

Hey Pia ;). Yes, I, too love Samadhi! it's how I have met many of my close friends here after I moved from the mainland. getting involved in something when you move is always a great way to meet people. Lady Throttle have you had a chance to go to the studio yet?

Lady Throttle, at any rate, you'll be made to feel welcome if you end up either in FFG or Samadhi (or both) if you end up in Oahu. The girls at FFG are sweet, and the people at Samadhi are friendly so it's easy to make friends in either place. But like Corby said, just getting involved in something is a great way to meet people here. There's just so much to do, everyone eventually finds something that they enjoy and makes friends in the process. :)

hey gummypia - thanks for the info! i have never tried anything aerial - yoga, silks, hammock, etc. but i think they go well with pole, and it would be great to have a studio that offered both! the studio maui is kind of expensive. i used to go there for yoga when i first moved here, thinking i would meet friends, but i never met any friends there. i may check out those aerial classes, but i'm really more interested in pole! haven't heard anything from our ffg lady....
