So I tried my studio's 45mm the other day after usually using a 50mm. For some reason my hand has been cramped and hurting all day. Was the pole too small or is the change in grip just something to get used to?

I have 3 diameters, 38, 45, and 50. My hand does not appreciate a cup grip after a while on my 38 where as it never protested on my 50. I have not really done it a whole lot on my 45 so that is the only observation I have made.
Thanks. I wonder if that means I need to be using a 50.

I have had wrist pain when using my 40mm pole so it could be possible.
I spend most of my time on a 50 - I have noticed that when I use a 45 I change the way I hold the pole which results in finger cramping. (I scrunch my fingers because it seems odd that they are touching my thumb - if that makes sense.) However, after spending a substantial amount of time on a 45, I got used to the diameter and no more cramping.
I've never had any pain on a 50 or a 40. But my hands still don't touch on a 40. Could it be that you were gripping too hard on the smaller pole? Does your thumb go over your fingers on the smaller one?
No my thumb doesnt touch my fingers. But I guess it just takes some getting used to. Im not sure. I'm going to try it more and see how that works. Noone else seems to have the same problem unless their fingers touch. xD Seems like it might be an overgrip too? Im not sure what that looks like or how to fix it. But it'd make sense.
Some people get pain from gripping too tightly when they start poling. Perhaps that's the issue since its a new diameter for you...maybe next time you play on it, focus on lightening the grip :-). And it helps to stretch the palm after using it. Just hold your hand palm up, use your other hand to pull the fingers a little backwards. This helps me with lyra (which is a very small diameter).
