Flexy over 30?

Hi Everyone! I love poling and have gotten fairly decent at it (I'm still at an intermediate level). I am constantly impressed with my ever-increasing strength, however I still struggle with FLEXIBILITY! The splits are my nemisis!!! Every time we stretch in class, I look around and I am the least flexible person in the room! As I progress through the various levels, I notice my lack of flexibility has been holding me back more and more and keeping my moves from really "popping". It's very discouraging. So my question is.... Is it possible for someone with terrible flexibility to BECOME flexy after 30? or is it too late? I'm 30 years old, am pretty healthy, and don't have any bone or joint problems that I know of. How often do you all work on your flexibility? I just feel like I have so far to go and I haven't seen my flexibility improve very much. Any input you have would be appreciated.

Your welcome Shellectra! Hubby can still help : ) just tell him to only push during the exhale you use to sink deeper into your stretch. When I first started I did that stretch 3-4 times a week, 10 full reps. Now I can get to the floor in 2-3 reps. You can also lie on the floor with one leg out straight and gently pulling the other leg towards your chest. Use your exhale to bring your leg a little closer to your chest. Then switch. The key is using your exhale. Good luck!!

I use my pole to help me :-) I sit in the straddle position, facing the pole, so that the pole is directly in front of my torso, but ever so slightly out of reach, then lean forward and try to grasp the pole, and use it to help me get my chest closer to the floor. I do this at least 3 or 4 times. It seems to help. My straddle is still a long way off though :-(

hi, i just started flexxy training and am over 30. i am using a combo of things and am seeing some improvement. i use veena's lessons, alethea's dvds, and a leg stretcher. i made the leg sttretcher myself using a youtube video. ive noticed some good gains a already. so there is hope for us over 30. lol. hope that helped, kat

I've been stretching off an on for about a year seriously. I started at somewhere around 8 - 11 inches in front splits - i'm down to about 4-2 inches on them and still about 12-16 off from middle splits. I had to spend a lot of time researching different methods of stretching until it hit me that I needed to use all sorts of stretch methods to get what I want. I've done resistance stretching with Ottersocks and that was AMAZING! I was able to see gains almost right away but I still had to incorporate moving stretches and passive stretches. I think it's good to try everything and see how your body reacts. I have my own little workout that I designed which is a lot of floor work for moving stretches which helps me from getting bored, resisatance stretches peppered with some pst stretches followed by passive stretches. When I am available to - I also take aerial yoga which has really helped me out a ton! Traditional mat pilates is awesome too - I mean traditional pilates not the newer core based workouts that stray from the traditional style. If you check out ballet warm up's there are a lot of great stretches in there too - plies are amazing for opening your hips if you do them correctly. Oh and I'm 31 so any gains I've made have been since I turned 30 lol!

@amazonlady its really cool and inexpensive!!! really helps me with the middle split!!! just make sure you get old school crutches. meaning, you need crutches that can screw and unscrew. @charley. what are ottersocks?

LOL - Ottersocks is a member here - her real name is Ellen Lovelace - she's on facebook. she does Skype lessons - which I loved! Her program also comes with flash cards.

Check out this lady! She is 57 and started stretching/doing yoga seriously at age 47 after not having done any gymnastics training for 30 years! I don't know how flexy she was born but it is still inspiring that she is super flexible at her age!I think the daily stretching had to have helped! http://youtu.be/cYWEmU5wgIM

I like too how she uses the yoga blocks to do oversplits and slide into splits. Will remember that for my own use.
