Editing Vids on a mac...formats

hey i have a mac with idvd, imovie, and all that other 'i-stuff' 😀 i've edited some vids taken on my computer in imovie but i have a sony cybershot camera that i would love to edit vids on too....however the format doesn't match up...i need to change it to .mov to be able to use it in imovie. Does anyone have any suggestions for a program that converts to .mov and that can be used on a mac...and a version i can buy in a store (It makes me uneasy downloading a trial version from the internet). I'd like it to do multiple formats in case i have to edit other poeple's vids as well. any suggestions?

You should be able to import into iMovie from most formats using the import option under file, beyond that you could just import from the camera. The only format that iMovie will really have trouble with is WMV.

I read that it only takes 3 types of formats...the problem is when i click on import and the box pops up to select the file, it has it shaded out so that i can't select it because the format isn't correct. I even tried loading it into iphoto then importing it from iphoto to imovie but it still doesn't work. its really frustrating 😈

What kind of camera are you using? I'll see if I can find out more about its format for you.

Do you know what version of iMovie you are running?

I'll have to go home and see the version...they preloaded it to my mac last year when i bought everything.

the version is 8.0.6 (821)....sorry that took so long...its been a busy week! =)
