My new lyra came, taped and everything. I was wondering if there is any special care involved with it. The tape is sticky so it collects goobers. Can it be cleaned, or do you just have to retape it periodically?

From my experience, which doesn't make me correct, I'm sure, lol, it will need to be retaped periodically. Similar to a trapeze bar.
With use, the tape will get less tacky and be just right. Once it's past that stage, time to retape. I basically wait until the tape starts rolling and coming off bc I really don't like the sticky tape stage of the process. Would definitely suggest complete removal of the old tape before retaping. It will last much longer that way. But nothing wrong with a patch job in a pinch!

Also you can put acetone on a rag and wipe it down - it will take the stickiness off and in a pinch you can use nail polish

I will soon be ordering one and it doesn't come taped. Do they have to be taped?
I'm pretty sure they don't have to be taped. I'm no where near an expert, but one of the lyras at my class last night was not taped.
Ooh, where do you have it rigged? Lyras can be taped or untaped...I prefer taped.
I rubbed down my sticky tape with chalk. It's messy the first couple of times it's used, but mich better than the ooey-gooey tape.
Taping it helps give you grip while you're learning. But you can leave it "naked" it you want! I'm also not an expert, I just started working with lyra. But I read that if you use a tape that does not contain zinc oxide, it shouldn't have that gummy residue.
I always ues Mueller brand tape - not gummy and comes in many fun colors. Can be found online (findtape.com). My lyra takes about two rolls to retape. ALSO when taping start at the bottom and wrap towards the top. This way the uncovered edge is at the bottom and won't roll.

what KIND of tape is the mueller tape?
its kinesio tape. Cotton, latex free with hypallergenic adhesive.
