Can i use Plywood when setting up pole?

Hi, I'm getting my first pole (Xpert X-pole) soon, however, I have a large artex design ceiling. I'm worried that the pole will damage the ceiling but I'd read some suggestions about placing a larger piece of plywood in between the dome top and ceiling... My question is will I need to drill in the wood to the ceiling as well or can I literally just sandwich the two together? Or would the ceiling be alright without the wood? Sorry if this question has been asked but I haven't found any answers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
