Back Flexy training question

Just a quick question for those who are or have been training their back flexibility! When I attempt to do a good, long back arch (for training back flexibility) it's... not really my back that's doing any stretching. It's my abs. Is this normal? I mean, I can go so far that breathing causes a deeper stretch! I don't, obviously, because I'm somewhat addicted to air, but... Seriously, am I doing this right? I mean, I also stretch the muscles in my back afterwards by arching my back the other way, make sure I keep it low-key and all... But I was just curious. It makes sense to me in a logical, opposite-muscles kind of way, but... I just wanted to ask.
