So I've finally decided to sell my TG pole and go with brass because I don't like the finish for my sweaty hands. I currently have a 50mm pole and planned to get a 45. I went on the X Pole site and they only have 40mm in brass currently. Not sure if I should get one...?? Anyone have any perspective on 40mm over 45mm?

I love my 40mm brass! I have not had any issues with it for size personally :)
Just wanted to say that I did my homework before posting but there's not a ton of info out there about 40mm pros/cons in terms of people's actual experiences and preferences. I did find a discussion on here that started out with someone asking about 40mm but turned into a huge digression about the properties of various alloys of brass and had to be moderated by WebMaster. I am specifically wondering about the size and not the metal so I'm hoping you ladies can help shed some light on it! Thanks!!!
Both my current studio or my previous studio have 44.45mm and 38.1mm brass poles. Personally I prefer to use the 45s because I have a 45 TG at home. However, I have used the 38s a couple of times and I don't mind them. The general consensus is that 45s are better for leg grip and 38s are better for hand grip but you can do all tricks on either. The Australian Pole Championships are performed on 38s and I'm not sure about Miss Pole Dance Australia. I've stuck with 45 because I find it to be a happy medium between the different sizes. If you want brass though, and your options are 40 or 50 I'd go the 40 for sure.

I feel like I'm going to end up with 5 different poles! Veena says she still prefers the 45 and brings up the height question. I am 5'10" tall and use a 50mm now and can handspring mount on a good grip (low sweat) day. So I think the 45 would be fine for me, but with my sweaty hand grip issues, the 40mm sounds pretty freakin awesome. I'd love to have that hand grip confidence but am unsure about the trade off with thigh grip. I am also wondering if I would lose strength working on a 40mm at home all the time. I'll still be learning on a 50 at my studio for all the new positions and combos. I'm so clueless. I totally bought a pole that ultimately doesn't work for me the first time. I just want my second pole to be a winner. All advice or experience is appreciated!

The studio where I teach has 45mm and a 40mm. I learned on 50mm. There is nothing I can't do on a 40mm that I could do on a 50mm. There is a little less pole for leg grips, but your hand (especially if you have small hands) can get an excellent, secure grip on a 40mm. Also, from years of poling, I was beginning to develop wrist pain. The 40mm (which I also have at home now) has enabled me to abolish the pain and keep advancing. Competitions in the US are still on 45mm, so factor that into your decision.

If you are 5 10 you may want to stay with the 45. I love playing with my 40, but I wouldn't say it's better than my 45, just different, anything where hands do most of the work, it's easier. If you can try one somewhere do it. I say 45 is the safest size to go with because it between both! I personally have every pole finish and size, except for 38mm and the new silicone. I never use my 50s unless I have to for some reason. lol
I have 45 TG and I just got a 40 TG. Loved the 45. Pretty sure I'm gonna love the 40 but I cut my hand on our veggie slicer the same weekend I got the new 40 so I haven't had much practice on it. Climbing wasn't really any harder with less leg/pole surface area. For reference I'm 5'3".

Most studios in Australia pole on 38mm, (and our comps use 38mm) and I have a 40mm pole at home and love it. Like someone else mentioned if you eventually want to compete and the comps in your area use thicker poles, that would definitely be a consideration. But I love my 40mm :)

I'd never go smaller than 50mm and is because I have big hands and thick legs.

I'm not sure why someone's height enters into the choice of a pole, but it speaks to the point that pole is personal. It's a matter of what you like and what feels good to your body. Try out various sizes and then buy...
Newschik, I think it just has to do with hand size, which definitely comes into play when it comes to pole diameter preferences. While height is a poor proxy for hand size to be sure, the general trend is that taller people tend to have bigger hands while shorter people tend to have smaller hands. Hope that clears things up.
Also since my studio uses 50 and I don't know of another pole studio nearby and I don't know anyone who has a 40mm pole, I don't have access to try before I buy. I would be completely stabbing in the dark if it weren't for the awesome folks on this thread giving me their two cents!
