im currently in school for medical billing and coding, wud like some input on how u like ur job, so far i find the medical field very interesting!

Oh! I actually took a program years back and it was Medical Office Assisting. They taught you a bunch of stuff that you would need to know if you worked as a medical receptionist/assistant at a doctor's office, or a unit cleric at a hospital, plus they taught you medical transcription and medicial billing as well. At the end of the program we had a practicum and I chose to do a unit cleric practicum instead of a medical assistant at a doctor's office. Decided I really didn't like being a unit cleric, so I tried and tried to get into medical transciption. There were a lot of job opprotunities for a medical transcriptionist, however they all wanted you to have certain years of experience. It was in high demand, but none of them would hire a fresh-just-got-out-of-school transcriptionist. It was really unfortunate, I had really enjoyed doing the medical transcription part of the program. As for medical billing, it was very confusing for me. It was tough and I had a hard time comphrehending what was going on in class. I almost flunked out of it. Even though I didn't get into anything medical related, my Microsoft Office Excel/Word/Powerpoint knowledge did land me a job with the city as a Clerk. I pushed papers all day for a bit. So um... Probably not the answer you were looking for lol!
yes i still enjoy ur response! makes me nervous abt the billing part tho!!! lol if its anything like math word problems i may as well change my major! gah!! lol also worried no one will hire me, if no one hires u, where do employers expect u to get experience?!!
I graduated from a health information management program and I am certified thru AHIMA & AAPC. Currently, I work in Compliance for a hospital. However, right out of college I worked for an insurance company processing claims and throughout the years have worked in various healthcare roles for hmo's and I.T. companies. I like the variety of my field & I am always challenged. My advice to you is to become a member of AAPC and/or AHIMA before you graduate & attend local meetings in order to network. After graduation, take the test to become a certified coder (thru AAPC or AHIMA). Also, AAPC has an externship program in which you can gain valuable work experience. I hope this help. I bill vision insurance as part of my day job (I'm an optician). Billing insurance in and of itself isn't difficult. In fact when I get burnt out on other aspects of my job sometimes I prefer the billing. Each insurance company is different and have their own peculiarities, but once you've sent in a few claims and got a feel for them, it's pretty much routine from there. Hope this helps!

I might have to ask my mom about how she likes her job, she has been in that field for over 25 years and is now doing consulting for medical billing systems so I'd say the long term potential for career advancement is definately there if you want it and don't mind traveling. :)

i had to learn at my job, i'm a medical assistant for an ophthalmologist (: working on pre-med.. its fun stuff

Ah, lab tech sounds way more interesting than billing any day but you can have the phlebotomy, seeing blood extracted makes me feel weak. Good luck in all of your endeavors!
