I have just rigged a new set of silks in my garage but the fabric I ordered seems to thick to me. Can I trim it? Is it a good idea for me to hem the fabric also, or do I just leave the edges sloppy?

How wide is it? I would not cut it as most fabrics have a tighter weave at the edges which prevents fraying. And no, do not hem it.

Reconfigure your tie in your rigging. You can tie a rigging to shorten your silks. There's a youtube video about how to do this with a rescue figure 8.

I think from reading the OP she wants to make it thinner not shorter and I would say don't do it. The thickness of the fabric is what makes it safe to do drops and for it to hold weight.
I just got to take my first lesson yesterday from a retired circus performer. He had me start my first lesson on what he called- "webs" to assess my strength and hand grip before moving to the fabric. I had never seen a web before! Was quite interesting!

@ Paulette Ooooo, I had classes in South Florida too from an old circus performer. His school is South Florida Circus Art School I think. His classes are amazing.
