Hi everyone new to this!! I need some help!! I have just bought an xpole but am scared to put it up incase Make my ceiling collapse or something!! I am renting so really don't wna do that! I have a line running through my ceiling does anyone no if this wud be a joist? xxx

You should use a stud finder to find the joist, you can get one for around 5 bucks at a hardware store. The silicone should protect the ceiling if you place it under the proper support beam.
Iv read from a few people that the stud finders r useless (I live in the uk) wish I could just get someone to do it for me who nos what their doing! I'm really worried about damaging the ceiling! X

Hmmm, I'm in America. I know here, you want to find a cross beam. Over there, you want the dome to be centered under two beams. I don't know how the construction works or the differences in building codes. Its very possible the lines in the drywall ceiling are where they nailed the edges of the drywall to the beams. If you can see two clear lines of nails or drywall edges the right distance apart, I'd say you can only hope for the best. If you tension the pole without support behind it, you could indent the ceiling. :-\ Good luck, I hope someone from the UK can shed some more light on it, this is all info I have gathered through reading and being around the forums a lot.

Hey Greenleaf :) I used a stud finder from Homebase (it's yellow and black, I can't remember the make) and as long as you follow the instructions it should work fine. Make sure that it's pressed flat against the ceiling when you use it and it should be ok! If you don't know which direction the joists run in then check in your loft (if you have one), the joists will be in the same direction in your ceiling as in the loft. Also, I found it useful to use a pencil to mark either side of the joist so I know where to put my pole each time I put it up! I rent too and so far my pole hasn't caused any damage at all.
Thanks for your help I'm gona get a stud finder and hope for the best I'm useless at all this DIY malarky! but basically a long as the ceiling plate is centred on a joist it shud be fine! also are they easy enough to put down as I have kids and unfortunatley won't be able to leave it up!
