45mm vs. 50mm

So, I've been poling for about 3 months now and after the first 4/5 classes I knew I was hooked so I bought a home pole. Over the last two months I've been making good progress, in class. However, I've noticed that at home I'm struggling with moves that have gotten fairly easy in class. The only difference is that my home pole is a 50mm and the ones we use in class are 45mm. Does pole size really make that big a difference or is it me?

It made a big difference for me (bigger than I expected) and I don't even have particularly small hands. Like I don't think I could have landed a trick like Allegra on the 50 mm

man, I cant even climb a 50mm :( it makes a huge difference for me. my hands are kind of small

Good to know it's not just me. I actually have kind of big hands but my grip just isn't as good on the 50. I would never have thought 5mm would make that big a difference. Now I know. I'm just going to have to learn to work with it.

Ditto what the other girls said... I think I did the math before and a 5mm diameter difference is like .75 or 8 inches in circumstance. So it's a decent amount bigger. Can you feel the difference in your hands?

I can barely function on a 50mm. Way too big for my hands.

Thanks for all the responses ladies. Yeah Allyson I felt/feel the difference but I thought maybe it's the finish, maybe it's the air temperature, maybe I'm not focusing enough at home. I fell into a self made trap of thinking 5mm linear vs 5mm diameter. Doing the math definitely makes it clear.

It has made a big difference to me also. Started with a 50mm but love my 45mm.

Depending on how much improvement I see with the 50, I may save up to get a 45.

My hands are small and I'm on a 50. I can't wait to get a 45!!! The only consolation that I tell myself is that if I can do it on a 50 then it will be that much easier on a 45. I have pretty good grip strength and I have my 50 to thank in part for that!

I danced on a 50 my first year and half.. I'm pretty short and have small hands so I think that has stopped me from progressing in some areas, or maybe over stressing my bod with the bigger size. Now I have a 45 VEENA pole coming to me , it's being shipped today and i can't wait to feel the difference !! I'll have to chime in and update once I start back Poling... I agree with you missy if it's doable on a 50 a 45 should be better!! :)

I agree Missy. After struggling with a move at home I have gone to class and pulled off the same move with ease. Shoog - I'm also afraid of stunting my progress. I have more time to practice at home than in a studio.
