I have a 50 mm static pole which was researched and bought by my husband. Since starting to dance I wish I had researched with him and bought one with a spinning mode too, but why the different sizes? Am I doing the right thing learning on a 50mm? Should I put in an order for next Christmas? Can a girl have too many poles lol?

I purpchased a pole for practicing at home. I have a 45mm, which i find more challenging then the 50mm i use in class.. the smaller the diameter the more muscle work it takes in my opinin . i am about to buy a 50mm for i like it much better.
Check out my photos and compare them to your hands. I PERSONALLY feel that girls should use a pole that they can wrap their fingers around all the way, or with a little bit of overlap (but not A LOT of overlap.) For me that is 45mm and down. For some larger handed women, that is a 50 and 45 only. It depends on the person. And no, you can never have too many poles. More options! For me, smaller diameters are really only harder for thigh holds. For everything else, they can be significantly easier.
btw, I am going to get a better photo of a 38 this week, and hopfully, shortly afterwards, I will get to writing a blog entry on all 4 sizes, with photos, etc.

some people prefer workin on a 40 or 45mm as they have smaller hands which grips better on a smaller pole. i had a 50mm to start with and hated it because i couldnt get a decent grip on it because it was 2 thick for my hands to grip i ended up sellin it and buyin a 45mm and i love my 45 xpert sooo much 🙂. if u can try all the sizes before u buy a pole/another pole. im sure they use 45mm in competitions so if u plan on competing i would go for a 45mm. xx
so this is also my personal opinion, but I think it is easier to adapt with the legs to a smaller diameter than it is for your to grip with your hands on a diameter that is too big for your hands. Ovegripping can lead to hand and wrist pain.
I usually dance on 45s and 50s and don't notice a huge difference between them. I tried a 38 not long ago at a pole jam and was amazed that it made hand-grip stuff easier, but it also hurt like hell for anything on the legs, even a simple CKR. I've only ever been able to do a split grip inverted V (Ayesha) twice. The first time was on a 50mm brass pole at a studio. The second time, on the 38mm (stainless or chrome, not sure) at the pole jam. I have not been able to get secure enough on my 45mm Titanium Gold at home to even try taking my legs off the pole. For whatever that's worth.

Thanks for the replies.... I understand much better now. The 50mm does feel big for my grip but I am progressing well so will keep going and maybe save up for a 45 spinning pole to reward myself for good work!
