1st class!!!!

you guys i got my first time on the pole! it was a rough morning, cuz we went to chicago last night to see white lies (fun, front row in small venue) and when i was driving back i was so close to falling asleep! then i didn't get in bed til 4 and had to go to class at 11am. THEN i think i forgot my stupid atm card IN the atm in chicago--it sucked it in and i never use those. so i had to call and cancel (they said it automatically destroys if you leave it)--and i forgot my heels! 1 other girl didn't have them either so its ok. so no sexy strut 🙁 but our class did really well! we did so well on the basic switch-your-foot-over as you push out and spin around that they showed us the fireman? and i did really well at that! i have to admit i think i have an advantage because i have watched sooooo many videos of you girls doing practice and stuff 🙂 aha you put your outside leg around and then push off and cross at the ankles. the other girls had quite a bit of problems with it, i don't know why i could tell what to do by watching really easily, aside from watching hours of you guys 🙂 all she said was, "Perfect" 🙂 !!!!!! and i really like the exercises and stretches--this pole is really useful for more things than spinning! way funner than boring situps and stuff. then another girl was climbing the pole at the end, so i did, and the teacher said no climbing without a spotter. but its so fun! i'm telling you i am going to monkey that pole 🙂 ordered Thur to arrive Wed approx 🙂 omgosh i'm bummed we don't get class next sat for easter, but i'll have you girls and veena's lessons i hope 🙂 $300 plus $70 for class burns the wallet 😉 so. i'm SO happy it went well for me, i have a good feeling about this. and my wrist-upper arms are already really sore! crazy thanks again andrea/veena/all u for the info/fun/skills 🙂 i'm dying to do the cartwheel mount, wonder how long that will take?? and i'm nowhere near the splits but still probably the farthest in the class 🙂 kinda long i know 🙂 at least for a first run, you don't know how happy i feel to find something i might actually be good at!!! lis

I'm glad you enjoyed it! No one gives classes around here so I'm stuck learning on my own, which is ok since I can go at my own pace, but at the same time I wish I had the one-on-one approach and had other people to compare myself to. All I have is this site and YouTube, which can be really discouraging at times because everyone else always seems so good and I seem so sucky! But it makes me want to learn more so I can be just as good as them! Not to mention a class would be good because since I'm a beginner, sometimes I just walk around the pole thinking "ok, now what do I do???" and a class would help walk you through. But that's great that you seem like you're doing very well for a beginner (using your classmates as a gauge). Hopefully when you get that pole we can see some vids! 🥂 Oh, and I have to laugh when people tell me they learned the fireman spin first because that's what everyone learns first - except me. I learned back hook first... 🙄

🥂 Congrats! Glad it went well!!! You are certainly ambitious! Pole climbing already! Take it slow and enjoy, it's a wonderful journey! I teach the back hook first - only because I am sick of the fireman. A beginner level spin is a beginner level spin. I kinda think people first natural reaction is to do a fireman - when I first got my pole I can and did a fireman with no prior knowledge of pole at all - so the back hook is a bit more challenging and a little off the beaten path of what you'd normally feel like doing on a pole. 😬

thanks both jacq, i wouldn't worry too much about not having a class. there was a big pole in front of me and i did enjoy the warmup, but then we had to wait and wait to go over things, and i just wanted to play with it 🙂 i partly took it to get some girlfriends to talk to about it, because i can only really tell 1 girl at work, and the guys i tried to start fantasizing and sex drips out of their mouth 😉 but nothing happened right away for that. but it is nice to get a local experience with people. some people i know are entirely self-taught (tarakarina on youtube, i like watching her) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4ntTvzWXpI take veena's classes, i saw a couple and she seems great, then you don't have to wait for other people in your class, and you can (maybe?) try whatever video/move you want 🙂

TaraKarina is the reason I'm even on this site; she had a link in the info to her videos! 😀 I'll be getting Veena's lessons once they're in the budget... which won't be for a very long time. Damn student loans!!!

Hi ladies 😮) I'm signing up for classes at a studio with atleast one male instructor and one male student that I know of. I usually dance in my skivves and a sports bra or tank at home and I'm wondering where to get some shorts that are good for poling and just a little bit more modest, but not to long or loose in the leg area. I've got a couple weeks before I start I'm sooooooo excited!!!

I remember my first class....I was so intimidated and excited and ambitious at the same time LOL. So will you just go once a week?

I'm wondering where to get some shorts that are good for poling and just a little bit more modest, but not to long or loose in the leg area. I've got a couple weeks before I start I'm sooooooo excited!!! I when I practice I wear these running shorts from American Apparel: http://store.americanapparel.net/7301.html. They're short enough that they don't get in the way of gripping with your thighs, and even though I'm pretty modest about my upper thighs I didn't feel overexposed when I wore them to class. They also make bloomers that are ridiculously adorable which have elastic around the thighs, which would be good for modesty. The only bummer thing about AA is their sizing, it's very small. I'm about a size 8 and I have to wear their largest women's size most of the time, which I think is pretty unfair. Despite that I LOVE AA for pole clothes!

Be careful, it's easy to get addicted to AA clothes. The cut is so nice that you end up wanting one in every color, and of course they make a million colors! I thought I had it bad before I started dancing, but now that the realm of shorts and one-pieces are useful to me, it's getting pretty hard to control myself. Have fun shopping! 😀

Hi, I'm a beginner and am wondering is it possible to learn pole dance by relying solely on the instructional DVDs? Or is it recommended to attend classes? The problem is that there are so few schools that teach pole dance in my place and if there is, the class is so expensive. Appreciate for anyone's feedback. Thanks

Instructional DVDs are good but I prefer some classes (or web-cam classes) so you can get that personalized feedback and make sure you're being safe. Once you know the safety basics, classes still help when your having trouble but are not as important in my mind (as long as you have a spotter for trying new inverts). That's just my opinion though.
